Are British schools so violent?

I hope this isn't going to have to become the norm here in Britain.

This isn't the first time I've heard of this. Here in Massachusetts we have a guy who's marketing bulletproof backpacks...as a "precaution" due to the apparent rise in school shootings.

Ultra-thin* kevlar with an ultra thin* steel plate in the back.

...It sounds like alarmist bullshit if you ask me.

And seriously, in both cases kids today have ENOUGH shit on their backs, both literally and figuratively. They don't need an extra 8 pounds on top of all the books...and they don't need the idea that they need this else they come home in a hearse.

*Seriously...how much protection can THAT afford. Why don't you just put them in flak jackets?

I'm not so sure if this is about schools or the violence of our youth outside of schools.

As most of us Brits would be aware, there has been a glut of school age stabings around the country over the last few weeks(I think the number is 17).

Whether this shows that our youth has become more violent, or more prone to usinf weapons, or that this is now more widely reported than it used to be I'm not sure, although I suspect the latter.

Why? Mostly subjective experiance, when I was of the school age around the mid 80's I remember the race riots both out side and inside the schools. I remember knifes and on one or two occasions guns being taken off of kids whislt at school.

Now I see that my kids have freinds from all sorts of races, I percive that our youth are better intergrated than we where, and far better than my parents where.

So I say that it is not worse that in fact there is less violence from our youth today then there used to be.

So am I just an old coddger out of touch, or do people have similar stories to tell?

I for one blame Britain's sick obsession with knives. A knife culture if you will, for this absurdity. Why when I was in school I never had to worry about someone pulling a knife on me, and I was in more fights than I'd like to recall.

Shame on you brits!Yeah, that's fun.

Maybe we should just make the books out of kevlar and get the little fuckers reading.

Ever worn chain? Shit's heavy, particularly on the shoulders 'cause that's where all the weight is supported.

She said: "I think paying £130 is worth it for peace of mind - kids spend more than that just on trainers.

Now I could never justify spending that much money on trainers anyway, so perhaps I'm the wrong one to judge...

I see very, very little violence such as this at my school, nor do I ever hear about it, and would imagine that if parents have got this much money and actually consider buying it for their children are the type of kids that won't be involved with violence and gangs.

Hey, we Americans arm our children properly. When I was a kid, you could get by with a knife or length of pipe or chain, but these days...

What? I'm sure every inner city kid has $260 or £130 for fucking kevlar clothing.

Not to mention it seems just the thing for a private school.

"No, I couldn't afford it."

You'd think that, but inner-city kids are already wearing kevlar anyway. (Just not at school).

Also they can afford to buy crap like this:

Not that I'm from London, so I'm probably wrong, but I thought Romford was fairly nice as London goes

I don't know why the parents are bothering with kevlar; wrapping the kids in cotton wool would seem far more appropriate for what they are doing, and would be much cheaper.

1) No, they're not, stop being a retard

2) The Stabproofability(tm) of Kevlar thin enough to be practical to line school uniforms with is lower than the GDP of Uganda, making this pointless.
Splintered Yootopia

that sounds anecdotal.
...

Why, yes, it is. On the other hand, it's also true of about 90% of British schools.

Also, people aren't getting stabbed in school hours, it's when they go around with their mates for a fight with another group of lads, generally drunk, when this happens.

well it is London, which tends to be a little more crime-happy than most of the rest of the country. and seven kids being stabbed to death does sound pretty tragic, but that's in a city of between 9 and 14 million people. i mean, that's 20-25% of the UK population right there.

i do think it is alarmist crap, but then i don't live in London.

in my dad's school in Cardiff, however, the headmaster was stabbed to death. so school stabbings have been going on for a long time.... i wonder if there are any statistics?
Remote Observer

In the US, if the school has problems with kids stabbing each other, they put in metal detectors and either security guards or actual police.

If they don't have problems with stabbings, they put something in the student handbook saying "knives of any kind are forbidden, no exceptions".
