It's just a Flesh Wound!

A Japanese biker failed to notice his leg had been severed below the knee when he hit a safety barrier, and rode on for 2 km (1.2 miles), leaving a friend to pick up the missing limb.

The 54-year-old office worker was out on his motorcycle with a group of friends in the city of Hamamatsu, west of Tokyo, on Monday, when he was unable to negotiate a curve in the road and bumped into the central barrier, the Mainichi Shimbun said.

He felt excruciating pain, but did not notice that his right leg was missing until he stopped at the next junction, the paper quoted local police as saying.

The man and his leg were taken to hospital, but the limb had been crushed in the collision, the paper said.

Now, I've never been in a motorcycle accident or lost a limb, but I don't think I could have rode 2 km like that. I don't think my friends would have been nice enough to pick up the severed leg, either. How many people here think they could've ridden without a leg, or at least picked up the leg their friend just lost?

Wouldn't his weight distribution have been off without the half of the other leg?

And how did he find out? Does he normally lean on the cut off leg when he comes to a stop and fell over because it wasn't there?

"I'll bite your bleeding legs off!"

That is some skill to ride a bike one legged. I don't think I could've ridden the bike for another 2 metres let alone 2km!

likely he was in a serious degree of shock and not totally with it.

generally, when you're injured, you would look at the injury, touch it in an effort to asses it.

from this limited account, plus the seriousness of the injury, its a safe bet he was not fully focused and aware.

How much sake do you have to drink to not notice your leg being torn off?

I dont know, but you should always save at least a pint to pour on the stump.

Not much, your nervous system shuts down with that amount of shock pain. There's a strong ache but it's reasonable for a certain amount of time.

Sad to say, my brother and I hit a motorcyclist, or at least he hit us, it tore his leg off below the knee.

He was flown off the bike and into a field and, as my brother drove to get an ambulance, I sat there with him for half an hour.

He was worried he might miss football the next day, I could see he would miss it for the rest of his life.

He had no idea.

Thats a tragic story. Think of how many people would have chosen to flee the scene ?

Getting him help and staying with him at that time says a lot about you guys.

Am I an optimist to think most people would?

It was more a simple reaction - if anything I suppose it would be a reflection on my parents.

Another strange thing to learn was that it didn't bleed, hardly at all, if your flesh is sliced it bleeds but if it's torn the veins shrivel and halt the bleeding.

Strange things we learn in life.

Maybe it is optimistic-I'd like to think many people would do the right thing too.

I agree- I think you can assume you and your brother learned values and a good sense of right & wrong from your parents.

As a parent, I'm trying to pass these values on to my kids as well as my nephews- having the courage to do what you know is right, treating others how you'd want them to treat you, taking responsibilty for you actions-or lack of same, etc...

I dont know as much about trauma as I'd like to.

Is that a known fact, or is that only from your observation in this accident?

*snip*

I never thought to check, the paramedics told me because I commented on it.

In googling just now, I started to doubt my memory but I think my search terms meant bleeding was assumed in the injuries it came up with however:

When a limb is crushed in a railroad accident, it may be wholly or partly severed from the body. We might expect great bleeding in such cases; but it does not occur; the arteries are paralyzed, and bleed little or none, even when torn across
