Are little tiny dogs cute?

So my younger sister bought a chihuahua and well, to be honest, before I came to see it, I thought this was a really stupid purchase and that generally chihuahuas are ugly little dogs and generally uninteresting. However, I think that this one is really quite cute and it's really funny when he takes one of the big dog's toys and tries to carry it around or just chew on it (something about a dog eating a bone bigger than he is is just funny to me).

What do you think of small dogs? Cute little things or obnoxious and ugly?

I think they're often annoying. That eats into the cuteness.

My dog is half chihuahua half toy poodle. She's bigger than both her parents and all her siblings (odd because she was the runt) but she's still a small dog.

She isn't obnoxious or ugly.:)

Depends on the dog ... some of them like my GF's mini doc is a friendly quiet little thing that just likes to sit by you I find it rather cute

But I do find the yappy ones more annoying than average.

You mean cocker spaniels? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Cocker_Spaniel

They're not particularly small. I meant more like chihuahuas and small terriers... dogs that are usually smaller or close to the same size as the average house cat.

I think they are cute in general. The tiny annoying ones are still less annoying than the larger annoying ones because they aren't as loud and cause less damage.

I always feel like kicking small dogs. Not because of any particular urge to inflict pain on my part; merely to see how far I can make them fly.

It's mostly yappy little dogs I can't deal with. I can barely deal with my mouthy little kitty, and she's only loud at night or when she wants food. A dog that yapped its head off at any little thing would make me kick it down the stairs.

i think they are very cute.

i wouldnt have one because they tend to have extra health issues.

i like them best when their owners treat them like dogs rather than babies. dogs get neurotic when you dont treat them like dogs.

I was just reading this page, it's her sister. My Zephyr's the sweetest, cutest dog ever! He's not yappy. He loves everyone he meets. He loves to play, go for walks, shopping, watching tv. He's the best! Also, buying a rat? That's ridiculous. Obviously my dog does not act like a rat, if I wanted rat behavior, then yes I would have bought a rat. But I wanted a loving little pup that I can cuddle with all the time and he wouldn't squish me. Big or small, dogs can be yappy, annoying, destructive, etc. It’s all how they’re raised and trained.

Not to spoil all your love for cute little animals but most of these poor creatures are specially breeded to comfort ppl and their desire for cute little things. i wish ppl would aknowledge the fact that most of these animals suffer from their deformed bodies their whole life like boxers who are hardly able to breathe just for instance. i like dogs, proper grown out ones who are actually still able to live by their natural instincts.

My brother has a miniature pinscher. It's playful, and my little cousins love to play with him. Whenever it wants to go inside, it'll climb 3 feet up into a bush and start whining until I come. As soon as open the back door he'll try to climb down as fast as possible and run in before I can catch him.

I generally find Chihuahuas to be pretty hideous. My first dog, which died a year or two ago, was half-Chihuahua and half-Pomeranian but so it kicked ass. Sadly I only have one photo available to me of Gizmo, while I have hundreds of my other dog and my cat. I think it is because Gizmo would never sit still so most pictures had motion blur and had to be deleted.

My other dog is small too, I guess. It is a little terrier mongrel named Cletus.

i know there are plenty of NEAR exceptions both ways, but generally.

size isn't everything. i happen to know a chiwawa+daxhundt cross who's very frendly but in his playfullness sometimes forgets that fingers are not a chew toy.

Overall I like little dogs. I don't trust big dogs.

But beyond that, it depends on the breed.

I found one of these (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lhasa_Apso) running along the road, abandoned. She was the best pet ever! Why anyone would abandon one I don't know, especially since from what I understand, they're rather expensive to actually buy. Although the fact that she turned out to be pregnant might have had something to do with it!

Yappiness...argh, that's detestable, but I trained it out of her, and her pups, fairly quickly.

I wouldn't want a chihuahua or a terrier though. The irritating traits are far too ingrained for me to have the patience to deal with.

Useless little creatures.No they're not. There's 2 main uses:

1) To be my adoring subjects!

I've only ever met one chihuahua that I did not instantly despise.

I've been around dogs all my life. By and large the small yap-things were mean-tempered, nippy, irratating, and nasty sewer rats.

I do NOT have a fondness for the supersmall dogs. To me, a dog should be tall enough to pet while I am standing up. And I am short.

I love animals, but small dogs just seem so...pathetic to me. A dog weigh at least 20 pounds to be considered a dog. Personally, I'm fond of large dogs, 50+ pounds. I have two dogs right now, one is a mut and weighs 55 pounds, and the other is half yellow lab/half husky and weighs 75 pounds. My old dog weighed 110 in his prime!

I'm indifferent on the small dogs.

Personally, I prefer the mid-size models. Something along the lines of a small boxer. Small enough to be a reasonable companion for somebody who's living in the city (and doesn't have a huge back yard), yet big enough that you can throw it a frisbee without worrying that you'll smoosh it.

I have a little mini-dog that we got two years ago because my wife fancied herself after the main character in Legally Blonde and wanted a chihuahua as purse candy. We ended up getting a Yorkie, who's actually kind of cool.

Yorkies, and really, a lot of small dogs, tend to think they're a lot bigger than what they really are, and my dog's life experience has taught her nothing different. As a four-pound puppy, she took on a Rottweiler that was many times her size - and won. (She took on my uncle's Weimarener before that and almost ended up as an hors d'oeuvre.)

Her best friends are our border collie (bigger than her, older than her, thinks she's still a puppy) and our Siamese cat (20+ pounds, friendly, but completely evil and dumb as a rock...and a major stoner cat.) So, at the least, she can run with the big dogs.

Personally, I prefer shepherd dogs. I grew up with Aussies and I would love to have a German Shepherd. Small dogs are OK, but if I want anything lap-sized, I would just as soon get a cat, since they tend not to try to clean your teeth with their tongues.

Chihuahuas are naturally way too territorial for their own good.

Now some terriers are ok, you just have to work out the energy.

Funny story: MY dad bought my mom a pure blooded (required for point) Yorkie for her birthday. The thing is now naturally as large as a beagle - not fat or anything, but the actual size of a small hound breed which makes it about 3-4 times larger than the standard Yorkie.

I'm very, very thankful that my wife has the same taste in dogs I do - medium rare.

Seriously, I think I'd have to divorce her if she wanted a poodle. We are both fans of the "is-that-a-small-horse" type dogs - once we get out of our current flat, we'll be getting a mastiff.

What do you think of small dogs? Cute little things or obnoxious and ugly?

I had some traumatic experiences withg dogs at an early age that left me phobic. The worst was getting bitten multiple times by a Great Dane taller on all fours than I was standing.

I'm much, much better than I used to be, but funnily, I still don't like smaller dogs. This is because barking can still set me off a bit, and in my experience, it's the smaller dogs who tend to be bark more.

(Also quite ironically funny, considering their bad reputation and my fear, I have a great pic of me and my friend Jarek's Pit Bull Terrier Vannila (nicknamed Bunny due to his Japanese wife's pronunciation) wrestling in the park.)

If my cat can take them on, then they're aren't dogs! :p

Naturally I'm just kidding.

Not the best of measures... I once saw an old friend's Siamese chase a German Shepherd out of my friend's yard and down the street for several blocks.

Plus, when I deliver pizzas it's always the small terriers you have to watch out for, not the massive Mastino.

Ditto, for the reason given above.

Fergi America]Overall I like little dogs. I don't trust big dogs.

So strange how people's perceptions differ, eh? :) And you're spot on about the breeds, but the owners/trainers are also key. I've found that toy breeds are less likely to be trained properly, even when the owner has well trained larger dogs.

My little bro and his wife has a Great Pyrenees and a Catahoula, both of whom, are large, well trained working dogs who generally bark only when needed. They also have three Yorkies who yap constantly and, while house broken, their training is such that they always wear doggie diapers.

Still, you never see the news saying something like, "person mauled by a pack of 3 shih tzus!!"

And, the small breeds I like aren't the nippy, yappy terriers and the like. I like the ones who spent generations living cushily in rich castles in Tibet and China. The one I had was nice and mellow, in fact she acted totally baked :)
