Happy Left-Handers Day

Well today is International Left-Handers Day so hooray for all my fellow south-paws. According to the BBC we are the 'last neglected minority'
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/6943871.stm
Personally I think that is a load of rubbish - can't say I feel discriminated against particularly. Do any other left-handers think they are?

I'm left-handed. I don't feel like I've been discriminated against at all. In fact, half of the people in one of my classes last year were left handed. Admittedly there were only eight people in the class, but still. It was funny, all of the left-handed people sat on the right side of the classroom and the right-handed people sat on the left side...

Bullshit. I've never been discriminated against for being left-handed. (I do a few things with my right, but the important things are dome with the left. And yesterady was my birthday, so W00t!

My Gran had her left hand tied behind her back in school to stop her using it.
This I would consider discrimination, hopefully it does not still happen anywhere.

If I knew how to mix a cake, I could do it right handed. I can do a few things right handed, like playing a guitar, but the important functions, I stick to my left hand.

My mother tells me about how they kept her hands free, but would slap her, hard, on the left hand with a wooden ruler whenever she used it (unconsciously, of course). I'm glad to tell that such procedures aren't on in German schools anymore.

Is there a day for ambidextrous people?

Also, using scissors for the non-dominant hand isn't that hard. I used to get last pick of scissors as a kid so all the right handed ones would be gone and I'd be left with a nice pair of green handled left handed ones. I just put them in my left hand and cut away... but then I think that I might be genetically left handed, but the crayon got consistently put in my right hand when I was first learning to write so it might be different. I'm not sure.

Indeed I do. Left-handed without a left hand to be handed with; software present and willing to run but hardware disabled, so to speak.

I asked because you were dittoing Fleckenstein.

.. who's missing an arm? I never knew. Wasn't he the Australian kid who told us about his job delivering pizzas some time not too long ago and how he had a passive car crash during that job and all that? How do you do that with one arm? (I mean, I drive, too, and having gone through the fancy disability tests and fitting of the auxiliary supplements, I know perfectly well that they design devices for the car that'll allow even wheelchair-bound one-armed people to drive, but they rarely do, and even more rarely hold jobs you need to drive for regularly). Or maybe I've got the completely wrong guy..

Mine's all black too, but what was the very worst was that the, umm, well the thing fastening it, you know, where my hand would lay on/touch when my fingers grasp the knob itself, that thing was/is made out of pure, uncovered metal which alternatively blood-chilled or singed my skin every time I touched it, so I had to go and cover it in some kind of handy self-stick felt material, so it's all comfortable now.

Incidentally - why do you hate Maroon 5? Another thing we share, lest you get this wrong, but I'm curious..

'Cause they are fucking screwing over The Hives: The Hives aren't even touring on their own, they're a sideshow to those pricks. Last time The Hives even came to the US (three years ago), they played smaller, cozier, better venues. Now, as they tour with those shitheads, they're gonna play huge venues in front of people who don't even know or care who they are! It's a bad combo of bands and it's caused the ticket price to double since they were last here!

Yes, I know it's Interscope's fault, but Maroon 5 can take the heat too.

because things like scissors are designed for right-handed people, so the blade doesn't push together right and you can't cut. And the left handed ones they have in school are the dull ones that can't cut either.
Writing is a pain because we drag our hand over what we just wrote, smudging it
Power tools are particularly dangerous...that's actually the only thing I would ever complain about. Circular saws and that kinda thing can be dangerous if you're left handed and aren't hyper-aware of exactly what is happening.

I don't think it's worth having a day about it, but yeah, some things can really be a bitch.

Hmm, If so, the left-handed persons I know have trained some degree of ambidextrous-ness,... since I've never seen them complain about tools and stuff.

You know, I think that my school must have been weird in having an overabundance of left handed scissors because I used them fairly frequently. It's not hard to cut with the opposite hand, it just takes some practice.

I once heard this is why left-handed people on average die a handful of years earlier than the average right-handed person, i.e. because they are more often involved in (fatal) accidents where the fact that certain things involved were designed for a right-handed person made a crucial difference.

Not sure about the exact scientific validity of that claim, though.

I am sure I have seen something similar. I think there was also something about car crashes in that depending on the dominant hand people have a tendency to turn in a particular direction when trying to avoid an accident - unfortunately for left-handers that usually means into the face of oncoming traffic. Could be easily tested by comparing number of left-handers killed in the US and UK on the roads.
