what's your favouite sandwich filling??

i decided there needs to be a thread about sandwiches. because i think they are the best thin since sliced bread.

what's your favourite? what's your position on mayonnaise in sandwiches? should a bacon buttie have ketchup or brown sauce or some previously unconsidered condiment? got any unusual fillings you'd like to share?

for me there's nothing that can beat a good BLT made with unsmoked back bacon, iceberg lettuce, beefsteak tomato and tonnes of mayo between thick slices of slightly toasted wholemeal bread. bacon butties should have brown sauce in them, unless there is fried egg in there too, then i have ketchup and brown sauce. and they're best in morning rolls rather than sliced bread.

But what kind of brown sauce? That's the key. I have to go with HP. There are other inferior brands out there though.

Also a BLT need smoked bacon.

It's not that difficult. You just have to disapprove of everything and be a real misery guts. Licking all your pennies seems to help too.

I'm actually going to be back over in teh borders next week. I shall shake my fist at you from kielder.

canned tuna, real mayo, or, to avoid risk on a hot day, sour cream salted with powdered chicken bullion, real dill pickle, real tomatoe, not store baught, roma if it must be store baught, romane instead of iceburg, avacado and sprouts optional. those little peppeoncini are good too.

and NO DAMD EFFING CHEESE, at least not anything related to cheddar.

the tuna can be unaltered streight out of the can, but mixed with may or the sour cream alternative, and green onion (scallion/leek) tops chopped in (sparingly).

haburgers are of course good too, and other forms of dead cow. these however i prefer in a broth with pasta instead of betwean sliced bread.

and none of that limp white half baked crap for the bread either. something like anna-damma, 7-(or more)-grain, or dark, almost black, rye.

Probably something involving Marmite.

In bacon butties, I have Lea&Perrins table sauce (slightly milder and thicker version of the original, great with bacon and pork chops)

Hmm, I'm a fan of butter, chips (as in hot chips, fries) and tomato sauce.
However a nice chicken, mayo, lettuce, tomato and bit of pepper sandwich is also lovely.

Not too fussed on bread type.

what do you call a sandwich? because the wiki has 2 very different pictures, one looks like a baguette, the other are just slices of ordinary bread. Here in Belgium we have something else called a sandwich which is like a small sweet kind of white bread.

anyway, if you mean the baguette style sandwich, I prefer it with feta, light sauce (it's called like that in the shop I most often buy 'sandwiches') carrots, celery and probably some other vegetables on it. It's very delicious and you can buy 1/2m of them, mmmmm.

The dill pickle is ruining it, obviously, but if you hold that and the pepperoncini, this sounds delicious.

What's a "buttie"?

:)

buttie is just a coloquialism for sandwich, although i think it has to be a sandwich in a bun rather than sliced bread. my friends are all fans of chip butties too, never understood them myself.

First, the BLT is my favorite (as is the OP's).

But...

The tomatoes have to be home grown. So, summer around here is the only time I'll get a decent one.

The bread has to be home baked wheat bread, sliced and toasted.

The lettuce I prefer is romaine.

Mayonnaise - real mayo. Remember that Miracle Whip is not mayo.

And the bacon I get from a bacon of the month club (Coastal Vineyards).

I prefer the Country Peppered Bacon - sugar cured, with black pepper.

Ok, so the best sandwich I ever had was at Sally's Food Shop, which is kind of far away from my house. And I'd just left a funeral and was missing school at the time... anyways it was a BLT, but on rather large pieces of bread and the tomatoes had probably recently been in the fridge or freezer, and the bacon had just been cooked (no reheated bacon for me!). So there was this awesome mix of hot and cold, also lettuce and mayonnaise.

Mayonnaise is pretty much integral to the sandwich making (of nearly all sorts).

It's a filling inside of a grain-product holder.... I think so.

My favorite sandwich would have to be made with GOOD semolina bread with sesame seeds on top.... then layer in lettuce (romaine if you have, iceburg if not), sliced tomatoes, sliced banana peppers, black olives, salt, pepper, GOOD olive oil, a dash of red wine vinegar, provolone, prosciutto, genoa salami, roasted red peppers, white or red onion.

Heavenly.

i don't go in for sandwiches at home much, but buying them i tend to go for chicken & stuffing, all day breakfast, or at Subway an Italian BMT with lettuce, sweetcorn and honey mustard sauce.

when i do make em myself its simple: butter, ham, cheese. that's it.

though sometimes i love to make fancy panninis with different italian cheeses, meats, and usually a garlic sauce/dressing of some sort

Keep it simple.

Real butter, none of this "spread" rubbish.

y'know, i could have guessed you'd have something like that. especially the tonne of cheese and pickle :p

personally i can't have too much cheese in my sandwich cos its too strongly flavoured (for poor little me :P)

I'm old fashioned, good old PB&J.

i tried a peanut butter and jelly sandwich in new york... and i wasn't much impressed. i bet they're nicer if you make them yourself, but i just didn't like the mush-between-two-slices-of-bread thing. it had no 'bite'
