Region with the best beer?

Slightly inspired by the thread on Zimbabwe running out of beer and it being discovered African beer is often drank via a straw, so what region of the world do you think makes the best beer?

ahh...and here come the streams of "Americans can't make beerz! LOLZ!"

North America has almost all of my favorites...Europe is very good. Asia, not a big fan. Haven't tried many Australian, South American, or African

Interesting fact: A significant portion of the world's Guinness beers are made in Nigeria.

For Australia: VB and West End Draught!

Probably taste like a million other beers out there, but who cares? Both can be purchased at all good (i.e. non-yuppie) bars and pubs arcoss this great nation.

A great many of local microbrews, all over the planet, produce very acceptable beers. For tradition, taste, and full-bodied bitter, it has to be Belgian beers, closely followed by German and Dutch. These beers are good with a meal.

Personally, I find American beers very good at quenching thirst on a hot day. Much more effective than their European counterparts. They just go down easier, unfortunately, because they're effectively flavoured water.

Overall, though, Europe takes the lead in quality beer production by about six thousand kilometers.

This should be no contest. CANADIAN beer is the best, it is strong and it tastes good and I'm on my third right now, with six more in the fridge. Than I'm going to drink some Canadian whiskey. So slurp, slurp slurp.

Can this be right? I mean, Hitler obviously, but I think at some point there must have been a more influential teetotaler than Osama bin Laden. Gandhi perhaps?

There is good beer everywhere.

However, Europe seems to have it in the greatest abundance by far.

Wait, I thought you were a muslim? Isn't there some sort of religious proscription against alcohol?

The quality of American beer is hard for those who haven't been here to judge, because the only good American beer is from the increasingly popular microbrews. The macrobrewed crap that is exported around the world is watered down rat piss, but the microbrews I've had in the USA are just as good as anything I've had in Europe, and I've lived in Europe for 3 years of my adult life.

Still, due to the proliferation and popularity of good beers there I'd put Europe above North America, but not by a huge margin. Although, if we exclude France it bumps Europe's rating up a bit. While I do love France the fact that people there actually drink such horrors as 1664 spoils Europe's rating.

edit: Although I expect nothing more from this thread than the "American beer is teh suck! Europe rulezz!" form of nationalistic dickwaving that is so common in beer threads.

exactly. Seattle alone has 71 breweries (more than any other city in the world). New England ranks close to that many. Throw in assorted brewpubs and the like, and it becomes pretty clear that not every single beer from the US can suck.

Cobra and Tiger are certainly nice, and I had a beer in a Nepalese restaurant in Manchester once that was pretty good, but I can't remember the name.

I will say that as an American who drinks many obscure American beers, most of the best beers I've had have been American beers. (Surprise!) Mexican beer isn't too bad, either.

However, if I'm just picking a random beer off the shelf and seeing whether or not I and my friends like it... I'd have to say European beers that we find over here seem to average better than the American beers. My best friend and I particularly find agreement on German beers.

I've only tried a few Asian beers (they were OK) and can't recall a single African or South American beer. I tried one Australian beer (Foster's) once and was remarkably unimpressed.

Of course you have access to more US beers living in US than to European... keep that in mind.

You haven't tried Australian beer, you've tried Australian piss. Didn't its aggressive ad campaign give out it's really just another piss but made in another country?

Not to say I like Australian beers, but that foster piss hardly has anything to do with them.

The problem is that it is difficult to find the "proper" (ie non rat-piss) American beer here. Though I have had nice american beer and liked it.

However, dispite my general Anti-Brit airs, beer is one of the few things that make me happy to be from Britain :D

It is probably important that us Europeans don't think too highly of our self. French wine was considered the best in the world until 1976 ;)
