I sliced the palm of my hand today and its rather annoying as I don't fancy pain. Anyway, it got me thinking. What is the most pain you've experience and/or what is the worst injury(ies) you've had?

Slightly embarrassing - when I was in basic, I mis-gripped the MG I was learning to use and dislocated my shoulder. Very painful, and a salutary lesson to listen to the instructors.

Labor was pretty bad, but not half as bad as when I ripped my ACL, that hurt really really bad and didn't stop hurting, like ever. My knee still hurts sometimes.

Monday afternoon I got stung by a wasp 7 times, it was mildly painful.

I managed to cut my head open above the eyebrow fairly well after slipping...on an orange.

Wrong tropical fruit, I know. Laugh as you like, it makes for an excellent talking point.

Well, the most INTENSE pain I can remember was the time I sliced my leg open on an asphalt play area thingy when I was five or six.
The WORST pain I can remember was the time I had all four of my wisdom teeth taken out at once, and it turned out that vicadin reacted with my blood preassure meds, resulting in lots of throwing up. Not fun when your mouth is full of stitches and theyve taken out a chunk of your jaw bone to get at one of the teeth.
So yeah, I spent about a week having to deal with the swelling without the fun that comes from being so buzzed that you dont care about the pain.

It's hard to measure which pains were worse.
Some of the top pains were:

Blinding migranes
ear aches
stomach cramps

once in a car accident I had a very painful back spasm right after impact but the adrenaline from all the excitement made it go away really fast.

The other times where I suffered such pain were unfortunately either headaches or also sunburn. :(

Donated a kidney, did it the old fashioned way because

A: One floor above me in the hospital was someone who had the laprascopic surgery done, they nicked a blood vessel getting her kidney out and weren't able to open her up in time to fix it. She's now a vegetable.

B: I apparently have an odd anatomy and my rib cage extends so low they would have had to remove a rib or two to get it out using the newer method.

Long story short I wake up after the surgery and find out that having an empty stomach (having not eaten for 24 hours prior to the surgery due to doctors orders) does NOT mean that once can't vomit, and vomiting on an empty stomach with an incision that runs from ones solar plexus to near the groin (said incision being held together with staples) is extraordinarily painful.

the most horrific looking injuries i've sustained have often been the least painful (if you don't count the hangover). i once woke up with my face covered in blood (my own) and a huge lump on my thigh that didn't go for over 2 months. i still have a lump on my forehead from that incident (over 2 years later), the details of which i am completely in the dark about.

i got two black eyes and a broken nose after being beaten up outside a club in edinburgh, the nose was pretty painful and the panda eyes were kind of embarrassing.

split my brow open once when i fell over while stoned and knocked myself out on a granite wall. my friend thought i was taking the piss and lifted me up only to drop me again so i hit my head a second time. that was pretty bloody.

i can't think of anything more painful than having all my premolars removed to make room for the rest of my teeth. that was a complete bastard of dentist visit. breaking my fingers was pretty painful on the numerous occasions that has happened.

oh yeah, sunburn can be pretty awful if you're fair skinned. there was one time i had to go to the hospital to deal with the blisters. those blisters ruined most of that summer seeing as the nurse said i shouldn't go in the water for a few weeks.

I rode my bike off a cliff once and hit a tree before striking the ground. That was my first shoulder dislocation and a couple broken ribs.

Broken ribs suck. They aren't the greatest pain, but they certainly were the most intrusive. Laughing hurt. :( The most pain was(you guessed it!) A groin trauma. I was forcibly picked up by several larger high school students and rammed into a flagpole groin first about eight times before I managed to convulse out of their grip and they dropped me. That was mostly awful. :(

Back when I was 16, I was jumping on a trampoline and I feel down head first. I felt my spinal cord bend straight back and compress. It was so painful I coudn't move, breath, talk, cry, for a while. All I could do is just lay there.

Then this summer I was playing roller hockey without a cup. I dove in front of the net to block the puck and well, let's just say that I got a bruise on lefty. I learned my lesson.

Those are my two most painful experiences.

Broke nearly everything in a car accident, easier to mention what I didn't break;
nose, jaw, ribs, left arm and right leg, they were just bruised.
Did it hurt? Probably, but the drugs were good so what the hell do I remember.

2 years later got a papercut on my finger, stupidy started eating salt and vinegar crisps, intense pain!

But none of that compares to a broken heart :(

(

Damn, you were lucky. Me, I did something similar...I fell off a cliff next to the Grand Canyon and landed below...I don't remember the distance, but I do remember shattering both legs--and this was about just a few weeks after getting my right leg out of a cast from ANOTHER accident--as well as breaking several ribs, and my left arm. Luckily I landed JUST RIGHT to avoid spinal and neck injuries.

Not fun at all, since I was lying there in pain for half an hour before I was discovered by my parents. (I was thirteen at the time.) I was stuck in a wheelchair for seven months after that accident. (At least we had gone to Las Vegas first then doubled-back...we had to catch a particular event in Las Vegas. I wanted to go on the Star Trek experience and I'm really glad I got that chance BEFORE I was injured.)

People like to think wheelchairs are fun if you don't require one. As someone who did for seven months...let's just say it's not exactly an enjoyable experience at all. I never want to repeat that again. Never.

Firstly that was an awesome accident you had.
You're right about the wheelchair, I had to use one if I went out for awile and I hated it, not bcause of the lack of mobility, but just how I was treated. Either over patronizing or as a dumb cripple. Basically my lack of mobility had made my brain disfunctional, reminds me of 'does he/she take sugar?'

Awesome accident? I guess...I don't think of it that way, but that's just me.

But yes...the way people will treat you if you're in a wheelchair is rather telling of society. Oh we claim to be all for treating the disabled equally...but we don't. We don't at all.

I broke part of my knee cap playing CAPTURE THE FUCKING FLAG!! last week. I ran into a rock knee first. It doesn't hurt, even when i run.

A couple years ago, I was playing manhunt on a farm, and I heard something in the woods. So I started running full sprint, and all the sudden, I couldn't move. A split second later, I remember this because it was so odd, I felt A LOT of pain. I had run into a barbed wire fence. I got emo-cuts across the wrist, a barb in my arm, and a half inch deep, 4 inch long gash across my chest, plus the lesser cuts that stretched across my chest. So, what did I do? Took off my shirt, tied it around my deepest cuts, and kept playing.
Sweetest scars ever.

My coolest injury came from running full speed into the top corner of a brick wall in my old school's courtyard to catch a touchdown pass. I still have a nice little scar right under my left eye. I fractured my cheekbone and had to get a few stiches. I also fractured my arm playing soccer but kept on playing; that was pretty painful. My worst injury though, was probably when I fell from the top of a bunkbed headfirst onto the top of a radiator, when I was three or four. I don't really remember it, but it sounds nasty.

I've been more or less free from major pain in my life. Probably the worst thing that has happened to me was a major sunburn. Had blisters about 4 inches by 2 inches on my shoulders, basically taking up the entire shoulders, and was diagnosed with sun poisoning. On the morning after I burned myself I could barely move enough to get out of bed.

Epididymitis.
My epididymus (the wee tubes around my testicle that store sperm) got infected somehow, and swelled up, compressing my left ball in the process.
But the worst bit was when I'd just been admitted to the A+E in severe pain, and the doctor squeezed the swollen area in order to determine how acute it was. I blacked out on the gurney.

When I was 3 or 4 I was playing in a swing with my mom and dad watching me close by.My mom said we'd better get home,so I thought:hey,it would be cool to use the momentum so I can jump some 3 meters right in my dad's hands(seemed reasonable enough at that age).I landed face down in some stones, cut my face, lips etc and couldn't eat for days.
While riding my bike I once hit a bump;my bike suddenly stopped and I got tossed over it,face down in some rocks, and had a hole in my chin;the worst, however, was that my hands were left behind on the bike's horns and my left hand twisted and hurt like hell.
I once rode a sledge off a steep hill and ran right in a tree with my face.I thought I was gonna die but luckily I somehow managed to break with my feet and my arms the carsh, and I didn't even bleed or break anything, just some bruises. That was lucky.
But the truly worst pain I can remember is when jumping off a desk and landing with my big toe straight.I broke my toenail and it hurt a lot.
And my most recent nasty pain is my dog making a hole in my fingernail with a bite.Nails are very sensitive.

I got sun poisoning a few years back...I was working as a lifeguard, and got a nasty burn one day. I came home, and put lidocaine on it. Lidocaine makes you more sensitive to the sun. I came home the next day with hands burnt so bad they were purple, and I had constant searing pain on my hands, feet, and shoulders, and was put on percocet so I could sleep. I still had to work, but couldn't sit in the guard chair because I couldn't take my hands and feet out of cold water. 100 degree days while having to wear long pants and shirts suck.

I also had an iron placed on my hand. that wasn't fun.

sliced my finger with broken glass yesterday...that's kinda bugging me.

The most painful injury I ever had was in fifth grade, we were all playing football, and I got crushed by the 300-or-so pound teacher that was playing with us. Keep in mind I weighed about 90 pounds at the time. Couldn't breathe, couldn't move, couldn't do anything. Oh yeah, i was knocked down on my back too, so EVERYTHING on the front side got crushed. Luckily, nothing got smaller over time :D

I don't tend to get really severe injuries, I just get a lot of them.

Right now I have a burn on my left forearm, I reached into the oven to get my food out and hit the top inside part of the oven.
I have a couple of mystery bruises on my arm.
I just got rid of a massive bruise on my thigh from when I got hit by a soccer ball at nearly point blank range by some guy who was trying to kick it really hard into the goal except that I was exactly between him and the goal (I was being a good defender, yay).

Yes...I did that too, when I was five. Stupid thing was it was an iron downstairs in the basement--and at the time the basement was not a place fit for walking barefoot, so you can imagine what all was down there(thing is, the room was larger than the family room above. It was perfect for an apartment, actually.) My mom had left the iron on an ironing board, and I saw it, and my curious five year old mind wondered what would happen if I touched the bottom of the iron.

...

Needless to say, I still have the outline of the iron on my hand.

Broke my smallest toe on my left foot. I was in socks coming down a carpeted stairway and slipped.... slid down the whole staircase on my feet, stumbled when I got to the bottom, and slammed my foot into a recliner.

I HEARD as well as felt it snap, and what hit immediately was not pain.... it was nausea to the point of me having to will myself not to vomit, and feeling as if I'd been doused in ice water.

THEN the pain hit.

How the HELL can such a tiny bone hurt SO MUCH?

Umm, I don't have any really bad injuries to talk about, all of mine have been superficial, but my two worst are:

When I was someteen years old I let my bike slip out from under me on a sharp turn and slid about ten feet across the pavement on my right elbow, knee, shoulder and head. Scraped off a lot of skin, and if I hadn't been wearing a helmet I'd probably have a little bald spot above my temple.

The other one is when I was using a knife to remove duct tape from some coaxial cable. The knife slipped and went straight into the second knuckle of my left index finger until it hit bone.

Let's see. My two most painful injuries were:

When I was about 6 I literally jumped down ten feet off of a jungle gym and was resultantly unable to put any weight on my right leg for the next 24 hours. The pain was so intense I couldn't stop crying. oddly enough after the x-rays I was able to walk again just fine, but beforehand I was limping pretty badly.

When I was nine I managed to cut my head open on the hope chest sitting in my parent's bedroom. I remember thinking, after standing up, "i'm crying to get my parent's attention" so I'm not sure how much it really hurt, but I do remember the wound which was about 2 inches across an one inch up and down.

Yup, 'm okay now. This was about six years ago.

Three days of IV antibiotics and morphine in the hospital, followed by two weeks of pharmacy codeine, more antibiotics, and limping slowly to the toilet twice a day, and all was right again.

Except that my long-distance gf chose the day after I was discharged to tell me she'd started seeing someone else who wasn't long-distance, and my ass was dumped...

I've never had any really serious injuries. The most painful was being stabbed in the back of a leg with a pitch fork (my stepdad wasn't looking when he was forking silage) it went all the way to the bone. Not having the money to go to the hospita,l we just kept putting hydrogen peroxide in it and it healed nicely. Shitty couple of weeks, though.

The next worst was when I was in the Army in Germany and I had accidentally left my sleeve unbuttoned (it was hot out) and a machine gun casing went down my sleeve and made it all the way to my stomach before I got it out. Of course, it didn't do any serious damage, but a bunch of really small but hot burns sucks.

Being taken down in wrestling, I posted my back arm on the mat. Another pair of wrestlers toppled on us and my arm broke at the elbow. The crunch was loud enough for the basketball team to hear it a room away.

Tore ligaments, tendons, fractured three bones, and spent the next seven months in physical therapy. YAY!

--Most Immediately Painful--

After taking a helmet to the chin in football I bit my top two teeth so hard that they broke in half. Nevermind I split my chin in half, I tried to bite onto my mouth piece and screamed as the nerves were severed under my fractured front teeth.

--Least Painful--

I broke several blood vessels in my lef elbow and forearm. The blood pooled into my left elbow and created a huge pocket of extra protection. HOWEVER, getting it drained was horrible. :(

Ohhh pain huh!

Heh me and me Dad have a long running scars and stiches comp running. He is on top at the mo, after the stabbing and all.

But I used to be a butcher and have scars all over my hands, the most pain though? When I had a 12' steak knife slide out of my grip and my fingers run the whole lenght of the blade? Or the time when I put a chopper into my hand just below the thumb?

Umm naa I would have to go with the leaning to walk straight agian, after they opened up one side of my body to take a kidney out. The man that donated a kidney, good on you son.

Don't beat giving birth though, heh if my crushed knukles(on both occasions) are any indication.

Giving birth though is a handy reminder of pain and how easily it is to forget huh.

Second knee operation, by far. Went in for a cartilage damage, supposed to be an out-patient operation. Mid-procedure they decided to change from a simple removal to a repair (due to the damage I had from my first knee operation) and so they had to keep me under sedation much longer than they had originally anticipated. When they woke me up, they discovered that my blood pressure had dropped to a dangerously low level and admitted me for observation.

Well, with my blood pressure so low, they couldn't give me any pain medication - not even over-the-counter stuff. So, I'm fresh out of knee surgery, no pain medication, and on top of that I was hyperventilating (take a deep breath, throw up). For 13 hours. So, add in full body pins-and-needles to the pain from my leg, I wasn't a happy camper.

Finally stabilized the next morning and they pumped me full of morphine. That was the worst day of my life though...

Dental abscess is the worst pain I have known thankfully.

Ooh, I forgot the time I broke my elbow at school. I was going down the stairs in new shoes. Jumped up to hit the ceiling from the second to lowest step. Now, there's a door opening to the left, so I was headed that way. I assume (cause I have no memory of what happened) that I landed, slipped and slammed my elbow into the doorjam. Nearly passed out. My only memory of the event is going down the stairs and then sitting their nauseous and having the gym teacher fiddle with my elbow.

Best part was walking into the hospital. It was the elbow on the side without an arm just past it. So, it's wrapped to hold it in place until I got to the hospital. Plus, I have it elevated. A woman walking out of the doors just stares, like I had it cut off or something. Had to explain that it was missing before the accident. :p

The worst part was they couldn't truly diagnose what exactly happened. They couldn't tell if something moved because they had nothing to compare it to. I never had an x-ray of that arm, and there are no specialists in limb deformities in your local ER. I think I shattered a growth plate. The pain was similar to a broken bone, but nothing was broken.

Well, I just got hit in the head by a refridgerator door. That hurt a lot, although I'm sure it's not the most painful thing that's ever happened to me. It still kind of hurts and there are bumps on my head, but I ate a cookie and that made me feel better.

Apparently it might be a concussion... I still have a headache from it, and mom woke me up every few hours to make sure I was all right.

I have had 3 major sets of injuries

1) Broken Femur (That old "dont jump on your bed" thing your parents tell you ... listen)
2)Cut off finger (I got my hand caught in a door hinge of a steel school door on a windy day)
3)Punctured lung (From a stab wound coming home from a bar one night)

Second degree burns from my right wrist to elbow, sliced my right thumb to the bone, got a good inch and a half scar from that which still hurts on occasion. Then there was the time I got spurred by a rooster across the top of my head. Ye gods did that hurt, blood everywhere, I was soaked with blood, it was in my eyes, I couldn't see a thing and I had an angry rooster attacking me.

All three of those really really hurt, and the healing wasn't pleasant on the first two either. I mean, burns always suck, that large a burn is suck times ten. The thumb thing got infected and I had to soak it in bleach to get it all cleaned out. That hurt and it made a really nasty looking stew while it was soaking.

Ran 12 miles on pavement in combat boots wearing about 80 pounds of stuff in a pack, and carrying a rifle.

Time: 2 hours, 5 minutes.

Halfway through, I looked down and noticed my boots had salt stains (had seen that sort of thing before) and were pink.

The person with me said, "don't stop, or you'll feel your feet".

So I didn't stop until we got to the end.

In about a minute, I felt my feet. When I took the boots off, blood poured out, and when I took the bloody socks off, the soles of my feet came off with them.

Took about a month before I could walk again.
