That Resident Evil Sensation...

I was trying to find some articles on human-animal chimeras, in light of recent UK decisions that such research should be allowed, and I found that the US is apparently already spending money in that direction.

The US Defense Department, that is. Taking a standard human, and radically altering them. In this case, to make them "kill proof".

Callahan's second make thrust is to make soldiers, in his words, "kill proof." Chemical and radiological dumps sites, he notes, are actually "teeming with life" -- filled with organisms that resist what's toxic to most. Callahan wants to "mimic" that, by creating a set of "synthetic vitamins" that "forestal the onset of chemical and radiation" poisoning.

But that's the easy part. The military today only protects against "7 of 44 highly dangerous pathogens." Callahan wants to be better that ratio, through "pre-position[ed] universal immune cells" that protect against all kinds of diseases, not just one. He also wants his researchers to figure out "predic[t] pathogen evolution" to "preempt pathogens' emergence with preventive vaccine." If they can pull that off, Callahan figures he can develop "3 million doses of any vaccine or therapeutic in 12 weeks, at just pennies a dose."

Hasn't this kind of stuff being going on for a long time anyway, without darpa's involvement?

I'd just like to point out that the only animal DNA in the eggs being used in the UK research is mitochondrial DNA, and has (I believe) bugger all to do with the actual animal DNA. Carry on.

Also, I wants me an exoskeleton.

In movies...

But it's going to happen for real - the experimentation at the very least.

This thread was a disappointment. I totally thought it'd be about the furor over the RE5 trailer.

That's awesome. I want every single one of those put in to me. I'd volunteer for them if DARPA allowed civilians to take part. It's always been my dream to become a bionic man, and now it's becoming a reality...all we have to do is wait for this stuff to be commercialized, and we're set. There are some seriously awesome times ahead, and in the very near future no less...good thing I stocked up on my Kurzweil and Moravec ahead of time, and good thing I'm going in to finance.

I could make a fortune off of the first IPO selling these technologies to the civilian market, not to mention take advantage of them for my own benefit.

Scientists being allowed by a government to make decisions about science? Thank God, I can see the light at the end of the tunnel already!

"We can rebuild him. We have the technology..."

Yeah, and with that pre-emptive vaccine, you could go to Vegas and fuck every hooker in town without a condom, and not get sick.

Fuck yeah! Even more hope that a life of endless hedonism with zero negative consequences is possible! Oh yeah, I could also expand my intelligence to my heart's content and install a probability calculator in my brain. That means that I can not only learn whatever I want, but also win at roulette, blackjack, and poker any time I want!

The future is bright...

I, for one, am going to extend congratulations to DK for a thread that doesn't appear to be making out any particular party (inspecific) to be mockworthy buffoons. Not to say, however, that certain parties AREN'T mockworthy buffoons ... just to say that this is the first time in a while.
Kinda foreign territory, but good anyway.
