What happens to CRTs when they die?

My old CRT monitor died on me a while ago and I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do with it. If I recall, you're not supposed to just chuck them out becuase they've got some heavy metals and all, so what am I supposed to do with it?

Also, how do I get rid of old batteries properly? (while I'm at it)

Look on your garbage bill. There is usually a number to call and information on hazardous waste collection sites. They'll collect it for you and then bury it in some third world country that doesn't have any environmental laws so you won't have to worry about it. :)

Why bury it when an 8 year old without protection can recover the metals, wires and other useful chemicals?

I can't say that I get a garbage bill... the city comes by and picks it up for free (well, free for me since I don't pay property taxes, my landlord does).

Is there actually anything useful I could harvest from the thing?

Where I live, the County runs a hazardous waste disposal unit.

You know - the people who will take care of used oil, old bottles of carbon tetrachloride, dead car batteries, and...

your old CRT...

A fair number of US counties have such a facility, either government operated, or operated by a contractor.

Probably in the phone book.

They have some copper, lead, gold and zinc, but not in enough quantities to make it profitable to recycle a single monitor. But 8-year-olds can strip dozens of them very cheaply.

The only safe way to dispose of a computer monitor is to take it out somewhere and shoot the screen out with a gun.

Alternatively, you can smash it with a big hammer.

ask me how I know

BS we all know you keep the sulfuric acid in old car batteries and concentrate it to make 'improvised munitions' stockpiles.

I don't need improvised munitions, because it's legal to buy the things I want to have.

Actually, you can just knock the end off with a hammer. It doesn't implode that way.
Still, wouldn't do it myself.

Do you have a local recycling centre, Dakini? They might take it. My local one has a bin for old, dead electronics.

Or you can just dump it in somebody else's skip/bulk rubbish bin and bugger off sharpish* >.>

Then your landlord may get one. If not, call the city and ask them. If you don't have a private company picking up after you, then there must be a city trash disposal department and they can tell you how to get your hazardous waste so they can dump it in a pile in Zimbabwe or someplace. :)

None of the pages for Canada are actually useful. Half of them just have listings for getting rid of them stateside.

I have no idea. I've never really had to dump something like this off (this is my first computer that's been mine, not my parent's and I can't remember if they disposed of their old CRTs responsably or if they're just sitting in the basement collecting dust). I guess I could try calling someone in the

Well, my lazy option is currently to get my parents to store it in their basement (they have much more space for junk than I do :p), but I would like to dispose of it in a safe manner.

An electronics chain might know as they are getting up all these "we will dispose your electronic shit" programs, of course they probably just chuck the stuff in the big green bin.

Ah I found a place by browsing my city's website http://www.myhamilton.ca/myhamilton/CityandGovernment/CityDepartments/PublicWorks/WasteManagement/ProgramsAndServices/TransferStations/AcceptableItems.htm

Though apparently it costs $7.75... grr... I'm doing the right thing and it costs more than if I'd just put it at the curb with the trash.

You have to be careful if you're going to knock the end of the CRT off. A CRT and its components can store an electrical charge for weeks, with enough power to injure or kill you.

Around here, electronics dealers are obligated to take your old equipment and handle it for recycling, you should check if you have a similar option

Get rid of the old batteries?

Now why would you do that when battery acid adds such a zingy kick to chillie?

If your neighboorhood were anything like mine (and if you are lucky it isn't) then you could simply leave the monitor in front of your house the night before garbage, day and one of those gangs of creepy guys who are always driving around in old, white pick-up trucks would steal it away to their magical waste-filled wonderlands.

Well, I don't know that they do that around here, but I did find a place and it seems relatively hassle free once I get one of my parents to come and help me bring the monitor there. (I lack a car and they're helping me move soon anyways)
