The irony meter is dinging on this one

Last year, Migden voted for a bill that in 2008 will require drivers using cell phones to use hands-free devices.

In a statement later Friday, Migden's office said the rear-ender happened when she took her eyes off the road to reach for her ringing cell phone.

Her other excuse was that she was impaired by drugs ... cause THATS a tone better! Reaching for a cell AND on drugs

Just because she voted against it, doesn't mean it automatically applies to her; it just applies to the voters. :p

Mythbusters did a test where they drove a technical course sober, then while talking on a cell phone, then just under the BAC legal limit. They found that their driving was worse while talking on the cell phone, than when they were impaired by alcohol.

In CT, it's against the law to talk on a cell phone while driving, unless a hands-free unit is being used. Too bad many people ignore that law. I need a bumper sticker that says, "Talk or drive, asshole!".

An excellent episode I might add.

I really want to get one of those cell phone jammers and drive around with it in my car looking for cellphone drivers. Of course, I'd probably be a bigger menace studying my victims faces for that satisfying look of confusion and disappointment.

Better yet, just sit at intersections with one. :)

I got hit by a driver on a phone once.... admittedly the women was only doing about 5mph but it proves the point that phones and blind corners aren't a good mix.

I can't get over the number of people that I see on the phone while driving in congested areas. A parking lot is no place to have your attention divided between the phone and the action outside.

That is a very intriguing idea. I proclaim my approval for this!

I'm sure the FCC would be unhappy with you doing that. Not to say that your idea hasn't crossed my mind a time or two. :p

I won't lie I was working at a certain fastfood outlet at the time and was taking food out to a parked car and the women just speeds round the corner and out the drive through holding her phone to her ear and looking in the bag of food. So her attension was supposiedly going three ways although I'm pretty sure it was just the two cos she sure as hell wasn't watching the road. What got me though was the fact I was on a clearly marked pedestrion crossing, next to clearly marked doors. I a big lad and it sure left me with some bruises, I shudder to think what would happen if she had hit a child.

There are just so many things wrong with this I don't know where to begin: SUV (useless wastes of resources.), Cell-phone, (distracting) Politician, (another useless waste of resources). Add the fact that it was a woman (it has been my expereince that women are fundamentally incapable of ignoring incoming phone calls*)

Oh well, it was California. What else can you expect?

*Thought I was going to say something about women drivers, didn't you?:p

I actually tend to get more aware of my driving when on the cellphone, but I'm probably an exception.

I'd expect no less, coming from a New Yorker...

And the reason why she took out the cellphone was because she's a senator... she's kind of busy.

Funny stuff. I think my state goes hands-free this summer. I don't expect anyone to comply, however. :p

Then it's a good thing I'm not a New Yorker then, isn't it.

As for her being a senator and busy, Well thats what the taxpayers provide her with an OFFICE for. Of course the state probably also provided the SUV, so I can see where she might get a bit confused.

Being a senator may have also confused her on the point that the law applies to her as well as everyone else.
