Not for the faint of heart 'cause this thing will blind your ass if you shine it at your eyes.

That's a really stupid thing to build. A stray reflection could cause permanent blindness.

What class laser is that? Class 4?

I'm trying to decide if I could take several of those lasers and mount them in a bigger mag-light flashlight. More beams, more power. Though even that little one would work for personal defense. Why shoot someone when you can permanently blind them?

...Interesting. Very interesting. The military's made someting like this.

It's getting way more power than it does inside the DVD player, so there's no telling.

From some of the comments it seems to be a 245mw laser.

Then accidentally hit the mirror ball and blind everyone in the room!

Hmm, I have at least 1, if not 2 CD Walkmans from the 90s that no longer work. More due to the stupid gears in the laser moving area than the lasers themselves. Maybe I could harness them for a twin-beam...;)

I doubt the laser diodes from a CD player will be powerful enough, firstly. I think it has to be a burner.
Secondly, the diodes from a CD burner produce a laser that's IR, so you couldn't see your blinding ray even before it zapped your eyesight permanently.

First the German and Japanese made Rayguns and now this!

Yeah IR lasers shouldn't be used precisely because of that, visible light lasers are somewhat safer though. Lets you know when the thing is turned on atleast.

Now wait a second...we're talking about blinding eyes, right? Eyes that only perceive visual light, right?

So how could an infrared laser blind an eye?

Your eyes will still focus infrared light, even if your eyes can't perceive it.

Focus it to a point, and burn your retina.

IR lasers still generate heat, and the lens of the eye still focuses infrared light. I suppose it blinds via cooking your rods and cones.

Ah, okay. Yay knowledge!

Thank you.

You could make it safer by polarising the light and then wearing polarised shades. I think anti-glare shades are polarised. Just make sure you get the rotation right or it won't do crap.

Yeah, I'm sure the rotation would be right, if you're trying to hold it in your hand, and I'm sure your head will remain stable and in perfect alignment with your hand.

You wouldn't be cutting out all of the light anyway, so letting in a slight amount of laser more wouldn't be a problem.
