No, I'm not making this up.

The Homeless World Cup brought 500 homeless people from around the world to Denmark to play soccer. But Copenhagen appears to have been too welcoming -- 15 players have overstayed their visas and gone underground.

In other words, they've starkered. Buggered off.

I find the response of the spokeswoman hilarious as well:

"We have never experienced it before," said Kat Byles, spokeswoman for the organization behind the Homeless World Cup. "We're very surprised because 15 players is quite a lot."

Well, I'm surprised they didn't all run off. Hey! Free trip to Europe, and once I land in Denmark, I can go just about anywhere else in Europe...

Much better than going back to BF Afghanistan, or some other third world wasteland...

Ah, the follies of the welfare state. When will they learn?

I thought that this was going to be another one of those "Cops dropped the hobos off 50miles outside the city in the middle of winter" threads.

I'm going to guess that this event isn't going to happen again, or at least not without a shitload of security.

I don't think they thought the whole thing through.

Sure - let them stay. But make that arrangement up front, first. If you only ask the question, "is anyplace in Europe better than the fuckhole they're leaving?" and the answer is "yes" then you have to consider the possibility of them wanting to stay forever.

Well if they are going to use the homeless for entertainment, then the least they can do is compensate them with a cardboard box in one of their alleyways and a bit of spare change.

Didn't you find that a bit strange - "using the homeless for entertainment"?

If it had been, DK would have elaborated on how the hobo deserved it and the officer was getting and unfair trial for his actions.

I guess you forgot my posts last summer on the outrageous antics of the Edmonton police, and how they killed innocent homeless First Nation people.

Or did you deliberately not read them?

Ah, the follies of the welfare state. When will they learn? If they're underground they wont get any use of the welfare state, and if they're found they will be kicked out. If we can send iraqies back to Iraq I think it's fair to assume that we wont have a problem kicking a few homeless people out.;) This has pretty much nothing to do with Denmark being a welfare state, and everything to do with these people being homeless.

They are prolly all in that christiania place. If they find them there I sure hope they use it as an excuse to tear the place down. Any excuse will do for me though, as long as the place gets turned into something not as ugly as it is now. On the other hand, it's a great place to put all the people, that think that Stalin was the greatest man ever, away from everyone else.
