Does anyone here know a lot about thunderbird (the e-mail client)? I've set up an account for my aol email address that works perfectly, but my Hotmail and university accounts won't work so well. I really want my RIT (rochester institute of technology) email address to run through thunderbird. I can read my messages but I cannot send out any. The university uses Outlook to manage their email. Any suggestions?

Do you mean they use exchange for an email server?

From what you describe it sounds like they may use a different server to send out email. Many companies do that.

Ask if they have an outbound address to send email.

You might ask the protocol as well. IMAP vs POP3.

You have to pay to use Hotmail in a mail client.

Your settings for your outbound server are incorrect. Either ask, or snoop around Outlook when you are next at school.

The main problem with Thunderbird is that it tastes like Thunderbird. Although that seems to be something a bit different. :p

If the mail server is Microsoft Exchange, use Microsoft Outlook. Thunderbird can import mail from Exchange but can't use as mail server properly like outlook does.
