Army probe into drinking, KKK

AN investigation is underway into a video which purports to show Australian soldiers binge drinking and dressing in a Ku Klux Klan outfit.

Defence chiefs condemned the video as "abhorrent'' and immediately appointed Provost Marshal investigators to go through the footage frame by frame.

"The Australian Defence Force does not tolerate or condone the actions of the people in this video,'' said Defence spokesman Brigadier Andrew Nikolic.

Investigators privately conceded the video appeared to have been filmed at a barracks on Defence grounds.

Serving soldiers could be sacked if found to have been involved in the video, Brigadier Nikolic said.

As much as I am used to defending Australia in general as a modern, multicultural country (number 3 on the HDI) with a minority of dickheads and an idiot populist conservative government, I'm really getting pissed off at the amount of brainless yobs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yobbo) who are continually bringing the country down, similar to being pissed off when extremist Muslim leaders (such as Sheikh Hilaly (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taj_El-Din_Hilaly)) make ridiculous comments that end up reflecting badly on the Islamic community. When I hear/read something like that, I don't say "it's all of [whateveahs] that's doing it." every group, be it country, organization or friends has a looney bit incorporated into them.

I guess Johnny Howard is desperate to get bodies into the army so we get lower standard soldiers like these yobos in it too.

I think I want to go and live in Europe, I don't like my country anymore:(

Actually, having grown up in Army society I can confidently say nothing is out of order. The soldiers aren't racist (not to suggest that they are particularly tolerant). Rather, they are just a bunch of pissed-to-the-eyeballs dickheads who thought it would be funny to take that KKK joke to the next level with bedsheets. Evidently, it wasn't that funny.

It's not that we're not a modern and multicultural country- because we are, I believe it's just a symptom of the fact that Australia very rarely does anything newsworthy enough to be covered overseas, and invariably when it does the stories will be negative by necessity. That is just the nature of news.

i got a brother in the Australian Army and from what he told me this kinda stuff happens once in a blue moon but he said sometimes in the army when your "on duty" it involves sitting in the base doing fuck all and then you go and have a beer and you do something stupid like wear a bed sheet while your pissed beyond belief because you spent the last 8 hours of you "on duty" time drinking like there was no tomorrow. it doesnt really excuse it but i seriously doubt these yobos really harbor any KKK beliefs, from what i know about the army culture is that they were probably pissed beyond belief and showed some poor judgment then again one of them did post it on youtube so maybe the alchol didnt make them anymore stupid than they actully were sober hahahahaha though my bro said in his unit they have an aboriginal (half aborginal i think) and he has never heard anyone give him any kinda of crap, sober or drunk so hopefully its an isolated incident.

I think the soldiers are fine when they aren't drunk, but when they are ... drunk Australians are capable of anything stupid wherever they are.

When you put this together with the fact that our only casualty in Iraq was an- ill-disciplined soldier who blew his brains out while skylarking and being as ass with a pistol, plus weekly media reports of problems in the military, I am not so surprised at this, it seems more like something that would happen in the Russian army:(
