Work Sucks, I Know
She left me roses by the stairs
Surprises let me know she cares
Anyways, looking to rant about work? Do it here! You know you want to, otherwise get out of my thread.
I just ask you keep two things in mind when you post:
1) That girl from accounting is a bitch.
2) This is not your blog.

Try dealing with drunks who for some unknown reason feel obliged to group hump you as a greeting.

Work: 5 days a week, 12 hour days. It's why I don't spend as much time here as I used to. On the other hand it's how I pay for my ISP, so it evens out.

Hey, originally I was simply going to ask whether she at least left you roses by the stairs - but since you've already taken care of that...

Work is pretty good for me. :) The pay could be a bit better, but it's not backbreaking work. A nice easy desk job with few complications never hurt anyone. :p

Then buy me happiness.
Just take some from your sister's purse.
OK, so where to start....
Well the current situation is, we are working on Company A's Oil Sands Site, sorta. We are in an area which is called Open Shop. Basically, Company A contracts out a rather large project to Company B and Company B has authority over that project and that land. They can create any laws they want provided that they do not contradict Company A's rules. They are also allowed to hire non union employees.
Company B decided to contract Company C to do the job. Company C, having jack shit for workers, subcontracted my company (D) to do the majority of the work. we have also subcontracted various other companies to do specialty niche jobs (ie concrete cutting). So at the beginning of this work cycle (we work ten days on, four off), Company C decided to reduce us to 10 hour days (from 12). This week (from now on, week = work cycle) we (generally) stopped excavation, and began putting in underground piping. Excavation is generally done under the mining contract (mandates 12 hour days) which is how we did it. Then when we began piping this week, we should have switched to the industrial contract (10 hour days, but Friday is time and a half, and Saturday and Sunday are double time, plus a $1 pay increase over mining). Instead, we moved to a overburden contract, which generally gives them free reign to change our schedule as they wish. So they cut us to 10 hour days. For a labourer like me, you lose about $1500 a month. Operators are losing $2000-$2500 a month. That immensely pissed people off.
What more they refused to do anything about busing. Here, busing is generally considered a given, and 90% of people take the a charter bus into work (for free). So we are currently taking the office staff's bus into work. The office staff bus drivers are dirt-Nazis, which is shitty considering the nature of our work. Also, the buses are for office staff, so they only run Mon-Fri. So began arranging buses as soon as it found out about the change (which just so happened to be the same day we were cut to 10 hours). We have, 5 days later, gotten something together, but it is only one bus and it stops at only three locations in town.
Sensing that the crew was on the brink of a murderous rampage, our union rep payed us a visit. We asked him questions, he gave us disappointing answers; we expressed our concerns, he promised to talk to the people involved to try to make changes. We'll Company C found out, and docked us all 15 minutes pay.
On top off all that bullshit, Companies B and C have been timing our breaks; disguising themselves as our subcontractors in order to spy on us; requiring us to show our security badges to get in and out of Open Shop, even if we are operating a piece of equipment, and other assorted minor bullshit. The smaller shit has been going on for a while, but the big shit has all happened since Tuesday (including the security).
A few crew members have already quit, and about half is gonna wait a week or two to see if things get any better before they quit. I think one person summed best: We are being anally raped, and the don't even have the courtesy of using Vaseline.

I rent inner-tubes to drunk red-necks so they can float down the Comal river. I just sit around on my laptop and use wireless internet from the condo that the rental's in.
But yeah, trying to explain to a drunk-red neck that he can't have his deposit back until he returns the tubes he rented is pretty scary/annoying.

I quit my job the other week 'cause it sucked and wasn't giving me enough hours. Well, plus I start my new job as a grad student in the fall so I wasn't going to work there much longer anyways.

I'm intentionally remaining unemployed this summer. Enjoying this last bit of freedom until I get old and feeble in the years shortly before I die. Damn graduation.
*attacks you with a sharpened shoe for using Blink 182 lyics, evar*I came up with a title ("Work Sucks") and the rest forced itself into my brain.
