Xbox 360 Owners Woes

After owning it for more than a year without issue, my Xbox 360 gave me the "three red lights of death". I've already called support, they're now sending me the prepaid box to send it back for repair or replacement.

I'm not particularly worried: I'd be more upset if they didn't extend the warrantee. Plus, I think the problem wasn't because of how I was treating the console (I've taken very good care of it, as far as I could tell), but because we've had a shitty heat wave up in New England, and it simply succumbed (I could be wrong though: hell the problem is very rampant).

They'll either repair it or send back a new one. I'm just bummed that I won't have it right away for college, but that's no big deal. People keep saying that they've been getting bum consoles two or three times in a row, but only on several occasions have I heard this. I'm not worried. If such an occurance does happen...oh well, cross that bridge when I get there.

Anyway...any horror stories other 360 or other console owners want to share?

Also: Any reason why I should be worried?

I've been a proud owner for over a year now I believe, and I've never had any problems whatsoever. No red lights of death :) But then, I do take very good care of it, and, this being England, there's little risk of a heat wave :D

I have a horror story.

My Dreamcast started having trouble reading disks, until one day it stopped reading them altogether.

Then by accident, I discovered that it will read them just fine if I keep the lid open at a certain angle.

So I've fixed it, but it's still really wierd.

But yeah. I'm no expert, but I'm guessing if you simply take care of it, it'll take care of you. Mine just faced an above-and-beyond situation...and failed me...

My 360 and Wii never had any problems, but my PS3...... well it fried itself several times, and after a couple repairs, just sent it back with a bunch of hate-mail. Never got a reapaired or replacement system. Truth that sony may create other good electronic stuff and movies, but it creates crap game systems.

My 360 screwed my copy of CoD3 once when some moron accidentally kicked it at a LAN party. Other then that, no problems. I even tried to test the whole overheating theory by leaving it on running a game for a week straight, 24/7. No problems whatsoever.

Ah well - C0D3 was kinda lame anyway. At least it wasn't, say, GoW, or even CoD2. That would've been a real tragedy.

Certainly.

What people need to know is that these hardware problems are not few and far between, and are likely the result of manufacturing issues. This fragility can be counteracted by...umm...taking care of it.*

At least Microsoft is addressing the issue.

Well the thing has 8 Cell processors in one chip (one is deactivated). It's got one huge cooling fan on it, meaning if that fails - the PS3 is stuffed.

That happened to my Xbox 360 too...but It wasn't that big of a deal...

They sent a box, I mailed it to them, got back a different 360 and 1 month of Xbox Live...

though... for some reason, every time I play a game on the "new" Xbox, When standing it vertically...Instead of the Player 1 light coming on in the ring the Player 2 light comes on...then the Player 3 light...like it would if the console was horizontal...

Must be topsy-turvy world.

But beyond the oddity, have you experienced any big issues? Oh! And how long was the turn around? MS told me a month a least altogether.

Well, mcirosoft and nintendo seem to have bult stable consoles. (Both in the past and present) Except for the whole three red lights of death thing. Sony, they just pumped out one crap console after another. (I know only two, and handhelds don't count) The PS2 while being in midrange in terms of graphics, really suffered due to performance issues, and in the later part of its life, has problems reading disks. And the PS3.... well its just crap, all around crap.

Nintendo products are actually built like tanks. The only issue I've ever had with any nintendo product was a finicky disk player lid on my Gamecube...which was resolved within the hour.

I did hear the ps3 burns with the heat of a million suns. Is it so?It's hot, yes.

But then, there are cheap, effective, and *gasp* attractive external fans available that dramatically improve cooling. I've had mine on for days on end playing games, video, Blu-ray, you name it... and with the external fan on I've never once heard the internal fan rev up to high speed.

In other words, everyone should get an external fan unit. It will literally save your system.

That being said, the PS3 is the greatest piece of consumer electronics I have ever owned, and from the look of things it's only going to get better.

Upscaling my PS2 games to 1080p? OH YEAH. I never would have imagined it... but now I simply can't live without it.

No, I'm just saying they aren't built to the standards of quality that nintendo does with its consoles and handhelds. There are different measures of "quality," and I think their relevance should be ranked by the purpose of the machine.

When I'm buying electronics, I want something that will survive a long life of ordinary usage--which mostly means sitting under my TV playing games. I'm also interested in the quality of the graphics and the audio, the overall performance, and the features.

Now, I'm not knocking Nintendo. I love my DS and in the not-too-distant future I plan to get a Wii. I think the innovative features are great.

But when it comes to certain features and gaming/video performance, there's just no comparison. PS3 wins, hands down.

I don't consider it a big problem that my machine might break if I drop it on a hard floor any more than I'm concerned that my TV won't work if I try to give it a bath.

I used to be kind of happy that I didn't have a 360 due to all the problems it has had. But now that MS will soon replace the old 360 with the improved 65nm version with a quieter DVD drive I'm sad, because the 360 has a solid lineup and some great games coming. I want Mass Effect so bad. :(

And while Nintendo sure does build durable consoles (today), you have to remember that it's much, much easier to do so when the technology inside is old, which means it can be made very small, doesn't get very hot and is not in need of any complicated cooling solutions. And no hard drive.

But when it comes to certain features and gaming/video performance, there's just no comparison. PS3 wins, hands down.
So how come multi platform games typically look better on the 360? ;)

We camped out for our Xbox 360 and bought two (one to sell later on ebay, which we never did - we just returned it and got our money back) and we've never had a single problem. Nope!

But the original Xbox... Well, that's a different story. We had one problem, where the only game that would work was Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell, a game we didn't particularly care for.

Just to name a few.

And for once, I'm dealing with a machine on which every update has actually done something beneficial. This is almost the first time in my life that I eagerly await new software/firmware updates.

So far, seems to depend on the game, with some pluses and some minuses on both machines, but you also have to remember that many of the games we've had to compare so far have been developed for the 360 and then ported to the PS3 to make a quick buck. That's not really a fair comparison.

In the long run I think we'll see that the PS3 is capable of MUCH more than the 360.

Can't wait for Final Fantasy XIII. The trailers are awesome. ;)

No, but only because I don't gamble. There's always a chance I'll lose.

Blu-ray players have dropped in price by half since the first $1000 models that drew such criticism, and the discs cost about the same. I'm already buying new Blu-ray discs at DVD prices: about $20 each.

Sony IS letting porn on them. In fact, it was just announced that the Japanese porn industry is going all Blu-ray, and there are two American titles already available.

As for interest, last time I checked the numbers Blu-ray had pulled into the lead as far as movie sales, particularly with the release of Pirates of the Caribbean.

At some point, the scales tipped far enough to justify (for me) the higher price of the PS3.

I'm betting most people have a similar tipping point, and I'm betting that Blu-ray doesn't suddenly lose momentum.

Reviewers of games.

This just isn't going to happen. The 360 has slightly more capable graphics, a bit more RAM available (due to the PS3 reserving more memory for system functions and because rendering in higher resolution requires a larger framebuffer) and is easier to code for, while the PS3 has the faster processor and blu-ray, which opens up for higher quality and more varied game content, and of course the extra resolution if you happen to have a really good TV.

Both consoles have their strengths and weaknesses, but all in all they're pretty comparable. What is really going to decide what a game will look like is how good the developers are and how much time and resources they put into a project.

Reviewers of games.Really? (http://blog.thebackbuffer.com/2007/03/oblivion-ps3xbox-360-side-by-side.html)

That's just one. Most of the reviews I find say it's mostly a wash or a matter of preference: 360's colors are sometimes more vibrant, but PS3 is better at rendering graphics realistically--which happens to be my preference, as I like the increased sense of immersion.

I'm not telling anyone not to buy a 360. Hell, if Final Fantasy had actually gone to 360, I might have switched sides before even giving the PS3 a chance.

As it is, I eventually caved at least partly in anticipation of FFXIII. And having played with the PS3 for two months now, I don't regret it for a moment. :)

My 360 disc drive is messed up, just like my original xbox. It won't always keep the tray in: the light just blinks for a few secs then spits out the tray. Once it stays in, the game plays fine. My original xbox would occasional give the dirty or damaged disc error in the middle of the game.

It would cost $100 to fix the 360. Solution? Get over it. :D

Yes, really. 360 games typically has better framerates, clearer textures and less aliasing. That said, the differences are small and are only getting smaller as developers are getting to know how to work with the PS3. The point was not that the 360 was pwning the PS3, but rather that you can't say that overall the PS3 currently offers better graphics, because it doesn't.

So far there just aren't that made good games available for it, and few make any decent use of the wiimote. Its success caught most by surprise, and since making a game takes 2-3 years it's still going to be a while before all the games start pouring in.

My PS2 I've had for...*calculates*...a long time. My 360 is coming up on it's first birthday. No problems well, almost none. I lost GoW and Oblivion because my friend moved my 360, standing vertically, while playing and the disk would never play again. Sadly my oblivion disk suffered the same fate when my dog knocked it over. Now it has it's home on my bedroom floor, horizontal, next to my ancient PS2. I would get a Wii, but the games just aren't appealing to me.

That is what many gamers and reviewers are concerned about. They fear that in Nintendo's fervor to reach a wider audience (hell, it's making them assloads of money) with games like Wii Fitness, that the company will forget the people who got them where they are today: the gamers.

I wouldn't be too concerned though: MP3: Corruption and SSB: Brawl are just around the corner, and should prove to be true gamer's games.

My 360 died within 3 months of buying it due to the rod. And i took good care of it. I've had my PS3 since the day it was released and it's been working perfectly. I sold my dead 360 to some idiot for $300.

Lol, I hope you didn't know him, unless he knew it was dead from the beginning and still wanted for some strange reason.

PS3 is going to have a huge pick up in sales in Q4. The price will likely be lowered and Playstation's key franchise (Final Fantasy) will be coming out with its PS3 game. FF has a huge following and all of the fans will cave and buy the system. When GTA IV comes out next Spring, expect another huge jump. Sure 360 is getting it, but PS3 has better resolution.

The XBox 360 isn't cheaper than the PS3 in the long run. Once you buy the HD DVD upgrade, you're at the same price of a PS3. Then you have to subscribe to XBox live while Sony's online system is free. PS3 is cheaper in the end plus it has Blu Ray.

You're gonna give me a refund, or I'll break both your legs. (http://weblogs.nrc.nl/weblog/wereld/wp-content/uploads/2007_05/tony_soprano.jpg)

That is what many gamers and reviewers are concerned about. They fear that in Nintendo's fervor to reach a wider audience (hell, it's making them assloads of money) with games like Wii Fitness, that the company will forget the people who got them where they are today: the gamers.

*shrug* I'm a gamer and WiiPlay is fun too. I guess I wouldn't go about calling myself "hardcore" or whatever title it is those guys wank to, but still...

I wouldn't be too concerned though: MP3: Corruption and SSB: Brawl are just around the corner, and should prove to be true gamer's games.

Brawl!

I agree.....
My Xbox 360 just reached the end of its 5 month lifespan. It intermittently flashes the red lights at me and is otherwise unplayable - it has twice corrupted my Oblivion saves and freezes constantly... Words cannot describe how much I despise Microsoft - I will never buy another product from them again. For the love of god, anyone who hasn't bought a 360 yet, don't!
