What is your workout routine like?

Be honest here.

I work out every other day. I need 48 hour rest between workouts because I lift.

I usually spend about 10 minutes stretching. That is followed by a 3 mile warm-up run for cardio. If I'm taking the day off in terms of lifting, then I make it a 5 mile run. I try to keep the pace at about 7.5 mph on a treadmill with a 1 degree incline.

Following the cardio, I lift. I do lower body first and then move on to upper body. I do ab sets between some of the various nautilus machines and free weights I use. In the end, I probably do about 20-25 total sets of 8-12 reps each.

Following my lifting, I usually do a 1 mile cool down jog at about 5 mph pace.

I then spend 5-10 minutes of cool down stretching.

The workouts tend to take about an hour and forty-five minutes total.

I've been swimming a lot over the summer because my job starts at 10 pm at night until 3 a.m. Plenty of time to fit in some nice auto-pilot lengths of the pool. I've been managing 8 km a day for the last month but i'll have to cut that way way down when uni starts again

What stroke do you use? Breast stroke?

I either run, swim or bike every day. I also do a series of calisthenics and isometric exercises to maximize flexibility and maintain lean muscle mass.

Wallowing in deep mud is also an excellent resistance workout. :)

I used to love intense workouts, but nowadays with work and everything, my routine is pretty simple and I don't have time for long runs in the morning. I do about eight different exercises with a dumbell, push-ups, sit-ups, squats, and hit the heavy bag a bit. Doesn't take more than about an hour/day.

it varies with season, weather, time, energy and stress.

Currently I have had no time and been under enormous stress so it consists of a 2 mile walk with the kids early in the morning, and running a mile after hubby gets home with weight lifting on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

Every other day I do 40 minutes of pilates. One day I will focus 20 mins on body slimming and 20 mins on legs and the next workout I will do 20 mins upper body and 20 mins on abs.

Depends on my energy levels and how badly I've hurt myself in kendo. x_x

Mostly though, 30 minute walk to work and then back again, twice a week I have 2 hours of kendo practise, then on the weekends I jog anywhere from 10-20 minutes to warm up, then an hour of aerobics, or, if I'm hurting, an hour in the pool. I used to run more, but durring the 10km marathon I tore the bands in my feet, so I had to take it easy and durring that break I got soft and lazy... a condition I'm trying to rectify now X3 In the winter I go to the gym with my dad and spend an hour doing cardio before I walk home... I pretty much walk everywhere ^^

Have you done other martial arts, at all? I'm thinking about taking up kendo starting in the fall semester but how does it compare to, say, karate in terms of a good workout? Right now it's a toss up for me between returning to karate (haven't done it in years, but I remember most of it), Tae Kwon Do (mainly because my friends run the club), Kendo (it seems fun and might be an interesting change from unarmed combat) or Capoeira (it's free and is probably one of the best workouts you can get).

I ride my bike whereever I go and that's pretty much all the work-out I get at the moment.

I used to swim and play Fußball, though. And I'm still working on starting to run... Slowly building that up. I'm going for long walks at the moment.

Mostly cardio. I spend about half an hour on the treadmill, then 15-20 minutes on the recumbant bike - this is three days a week. Two days a week I do 20 minutes to half an hour on the treadmill, then I do about 20 minutes to half an hour on various weight machines and then I do crunches. I'm adding the elliptical to my workout because I want to try cross-country skiing. I will add aqua-aerobics next month because my knees are bad and I need to do more low-impact stuff.

For about 2 years, it was a mile walk around the high school track. Now I swim laps at night on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Since I haven't done any strenuous exercise in years, I'm starting at 500 meters each day.

After coming home from work, I have better things to do than doing hours of workouts... Therefore, just about 20 minutes with dumbells and sit-ups, 5 times a week. And a 5 minute run to catch the train, obviously :)

And then, a good c-walk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HsmaASHRofo&mode=related&search=) at irregular intervals, just for fun. Not that I'm any good at it, but it sure gets your heart going fast.

I don't really "exercise", but I go hiking whenever I can. I also enjoy disc golfing, which is basically hiking on less uneven ground with an occasional curse word thrown in. :p

I also play drums...which can really work up a sweat, especially the last couple of days. :(

What is your workout routine like?
I jog for at least 20 minutes each day. At least three times per week I lift free weights, just to give my upper body a bit of a hello. I toss in sit-ups and push-ups whenever the fancy strikes me (maybe 2-3 times each week).

My partner is a black belt in karate, so we sometimes use his old warm-up routines as calisthenics. I'm amazed at what a work out these "warm-ups" are! You're not moving fast, just holding certain forms while punching or kicking or lunging, yet I'll be pouring sweat in five minutes. I really, really recommend this sort of thing for anybody who needs low-impact exercise options!

i intend to go swimming on a regular basis... sometime soon. smimming is good exercise, right?

problem is my job doesn't really have regular hours all that much, and i work weekends semi-regularly, too. it means getting into any kind of routine is very difficult. if i had a pool at home it might be better :P

i'm about 50lb overweight so i need some pretty intensive exercise, methinks :p

What are peoples goals from working out?

It means you can eat way more tasty food, like curry, without becoming obesely fat.

Wheras not exercising means you can eat very little, not get hungry, and not spend much money on it.

Kendo was very enjoyable for me when I did it. I think it will depend on your sensai as to what work outs you do to warm up at the beginning of every session. My sensai trained in Japan in the early 50's and is very thorough in his workout routine. He also used a fair bit of meditation in his warm up too, especially as a finish so that you are both physically and mentally prepared for the exercises and bouting that follows.

Although I left Kendo to practice other arts, I can reccommend it a lot.

As for my work out routine. Two periods of 30 minutes every day. During this time I practice my footwork, do a variety of stretches and go through many of the basic moves and routines from the German school of swordsmanship that I study.

I have a unique excercise routine called combined pint hoisting and cig lifting.

In all seriousness, I used to do yoga alot, but that was more for the calming benefits than the physical excercise. I'm not even 10% as fit as I used to be.

Cardio:

30 minutes of either biking/walking before breakfast, another 30 minutes after lifting weights. On the weekends I try to get an hour or two of some activity each day, usually in the form of hiking. Gonna try to start throwing some interval training in as well.

Weights:

4 day split. Monday/Thursday - shoulders, chest, triceps, abs. Tuesday/Friday - back, legs, biceps. I do a minimum of two different exercises for each muscle group (more for shoulders to make sure I get all the different areas). My program is based on sets of 3, with an increasing number of reps each visit (3x8, 3x9, etc) until I get to 3x12, at which point I will increase weight. If I find I can't completely finish the sets, I stay at that number of reps until I can complete.
