Ever wished we had two moons?

You may get an email looking like this:

On August 27, 2007, it will certainly look that way.

*Two moons on 27th August*

The whole world is waiting to see this miracle happen.

Planet Mars will be the brightest in the night sky starting August.

It will look as large as the full moon to the naked eye. This will cultivate on Aug. 27 when Mars comes within 34.65M miles of earth. Be sure to watch the sky on Aug. 27 12:30 am. It will look like the earth has 2 moons. The next time Mars may come this close is in 2287.

It is not true (http://www.snopes.com/science/mars.asp). Share other urban legends here!

Cool!

I think you meant 'culminate' rather than 'cultivate' though.

Saying that nobody here will be around for the 2287 occurance is a bit of a stretch, though...
I believe Will said it best with "I don't know about you, but I plan to live forever"

I'm fairly sure Mars won't magnify by a power of 10,000.

And Snopes says: False (http://www.snopes.com/science/mars.asp)

The event did occur in 2003, but it will not happen again until 2018. Even then, it won't look as large as the moon (unless you're using a telescope, of course).

Mars did make an extraordinarily close approach to Earth several years ago, culminating on 27 August 2003, when the red planet came within 35 million miles (or 56 million kilometers) of Earth, its nearest approach to us in almost 60,000 years. At that time, Mars appeared approximately 6 times larger and 85 times brighter in the sky than it ordinarily does. (The message quoted above was often reproduced with an unfortunate line break in the middle of the third
sentence of the second paragraph, leaving some readers with the mistaken impression that Mars would "look as large as the full moon to the naked eye" and not realizing that the statement only applied to those viewing Mars through a telescope with 75-power magnification.)

Large as the full moon? The full moon is pretty fucking big.

Awww... dang! I was hoping for a weird contradiction to all logical science...

People act weird enough with one full moon, let alone two.

Can we name 'em Ronald and Grimace?

Yeah I was just copy and pasting, I didn't read it very carefully.

Yeah because the current 7 moons that we have is a bit much, i'd rather it be just 2.

i've sometimes wished we had two suns, ever since that bit in HGTTG where arthur dent is trying to generate a sense of wonder in marvin when they are stuck on magrathea and he's describing the sunset. magrathea has two suns see.

There's a good scene in Star Wars with Luke staring out at the two suns setting (can't remember the planet's name right now). It would be very cool.

I'm sure the number of moons will decrease upon nearing sobriety.
