I've just seen the thread announcing the work being done on an LOLCat translation of the Bible. This has led me to some questions, for the answers to which I am turning to you, my esteemed fellow posters:

1. Just what is LOLCat?

2. What involvment do cats actually have?

3. Is this purely a spelling convention, or do people actually speak like this?

They've been in time magazine now, so it's not worth bothering about.

I first heard about them on a web-magazine about a month ago. They're kinda funny, I think. :p There's no reason to dissect the exact reasons for their existence though, I wouldn't say.

That's true. Questioning a fad never really gets you anywhere - you have to let it run its course. :p

Oh good. According to Wikipedia, lolcats may be a form of parody of internet culture; and according to TPC, they're also a fad. I was afraid I might have to get angry about them.

Yeah. The general rule is, the louder you complain about a fad, the longer it lasts. :p Although this one isn't too bad - many of them are pretty funny, I think.

I dunno about #1 - I think the risk of death by applying tongue to coaxial cable is pretty low. :p I could be wrong though.

That's how it originated, actually...I believe on 4chan, they made up something called "Caturday" with these funny pictures. Then more people started doing it elsewhere and they were renamed lolcats.
