Well, I have decided to use NSG tonight as the rant box for my life, I am finding university boring as all hell, and I was recently thinking of joining the ADF (Australian Defense Forces) as a General Entry (non-officer) for a career, I have been thinking it would be fun and a great change from my usual routine. I have signed up on their website and am looking at the various positions, but what I wish to ask people on NSG, especially those in the ADF or foreign militaries, do you like it? What should I expect if I do so, I know it would be different from my 'uni student' lifestyle, and I think I need to leave a bit of time to get my fitness level up to scratch, but what do people think about this, am I too opinionated to be a military person? And what do you think is better, army, navy or air force, and what positions?

Thanks.

You'll find most everyone in the military is like me.

Especially in the infantry.

You'll hate it if you don't like me.

No No! Do not talk him out of it. The military will be good for poor little AP. They will straighten him out and show him that his brand of communism went the way of the USSR.

If you are going into the Army I suggest getting into armor. To me it was alot of fun and made some good friends out of it. You also find out what the term "crunchies" means if you are ever sent into combat with the Americans.

Depending on how much college time you have left, I would suggest finishing it. If the ADF is anything like the US Army, than having a college degree will only advance your military career. With a degree you can join as an officer, or enlisted (General Entry). Opposed to what many people think, a solid chunk of NCO's have college degrees. Plus, the ADF may offer benefits for enlisting General Entry with a college degree, (advancement in paygrade, bonuses. etc...)
Depending on what your interests are, the Aussies have a renowned engineer core, and a first rate Special Operations group the SASR, that work very closely in Afghanistan with US Special Forces. Whatever your interests are the ADF will have something for you, intelligence, combat, mechanic, pilot, chef... you name it.

I heard the same thing once, only by that time I was too tall to consider it. :p

Too tall? Pfft, I'm 6'3" and I was in a Bradley for a while. Damn, I hate reloading TOW rounds...

I wouldn't say so, but you seem about 3/4 the way there. :p It was a bit surprising that you were willing to risk life and limb for a decidedly capitalist country. ;)

Current height restriction for an M1A2 is 6'1". I am 6'-2" and did not have an issue except for in the loader position. I had a hard time rotating the rounds. I can understand why they do it. However there was not one in place at the time I was in.

Ah, that's cool. I've been 6'4 since I was about 15 so I didn't really consider it. I had thought about linguistics, but that's probably pretty competitive.

Me too!

Alcohol!

and I was recently thinking of joining the ADF (Australian Defense Forces) as a General Entry (non-officer) for a career,
Career!? Aren't you (aussies) all die in some good forsaken dessert too?

I have been thinking it would be fun and a great change from my usual routine.
If you like rising before the sun for miles of cross country running.......

I have signed up on their website
They know who you areā€¦ They'll hunt you down now......

and am looking at the various positions,

"FRONTLINE INFANTRY! YOU SNIVELYING GRUNT!"

but what I wish to ask people on NSG, especially those in the ADF or foreign militaries, do you like it?
NO

What should I expect to do?
Shoot people....

I know it would be different from my 'uni student' lifestyle,
Damn right, they expect you sober.

and I think I need to leave a bit of time to get my fitness level up to scratch,
If the ADF is anything like the British army, they'll be so desperate for recruits they will take anyone.

but what do people think about this, am I too opinionated to be a military person?
Twelve hours of shuttle runs and a drill sergeant screaming at you will fix that.....

And what do you think is better, army, navy or air force, and what positions?
"In the navy, you can have a good time."
Well if your into that kind of thing......

Thanks.
No problem.;)

I had a chance to go into linguistics when I first went in. I speak French and Arabic as well as English so they were pushing hard for me to go into that field. As far as being competitive all I can say is that they are always looking for bi-lingual speakers especially in Arabic or Farsi.
I actually wanted to be in a direct combat unit. I chose armor because of my family background in that particular field. Today however I believe you can be easily attached to a combat unit with a linguistics specialty. So you would have to be careful how a linguistics career path would work out for you.

Yeah. I didn't think my two years of high school Spanish would be too impressive. :p But that's cool. :)

Killing people is not a "career".

I hated college too, but life got somewhat better after graduation.

Don't kid yourself -- college may suck, but the military sucks harder. And it sucks in ways you've never even THOUGHT of things sucking.

You'll find most everyone in the military is like me.Yea right. I think you will find most RWAs don't pass psych evaluation.

AP the military doesn't care about your political beliefs. Diversity of opinion is usually encouraged as long as they don't affect your job performance or make you a security risk. I've got plenty of friends in the army, including a couple of anarchists.

In my opinion, boredom can be changed by changing many things. Joining the armed forces may fix that but you become the property of the military - and part of your life is locked into their objectives.
