My computer is working again which means that I get to spend more time on here!

It actually turns out that my computer tower itself was mostly alright, the fan in the power supply is dead, but the whole thing can run with the side open next to the air conditioning for now. What was really the problem was my monitor, which was apparently dead.

Now I bought a beautiful new monitor for a price that wasn't too bad (considering its awesome-ness) and I'm back in business.

At least it wasn't your hard drive, ours kicked a few weeks ago, lost just about everything that wasn't backed up (including our expanded version of Diablo 2 that I can't reinstall because we don't have the cd-key anymore :()

Well, I didn't leave so much... I just had to post during very restricted hours (the library closes at 10 mon-thurs 5 fri and sat and it's not open at all sun) and I didn't even like posting in the library so much so I'd always leave after a short while and then wander around aimlessly for a while and be sad.

But it was really bad for me because I don't call people anymore... I haven't for a couple of years... I use the computer to keep in touch with everybody... so I don't have anybody's number or anything to call them and do anything... it sucked.

I have a blog and it was the first place I posted my delight. :p I just figured you guys might like to know that you get a post-whore back full time.

And it's not really running on the air conditioner, it's sitting next to the vent to keep cool.

Now that was a frantic search. Luckily we found the cd backup.

Word to the wise, children: backup your hard drive and always remember where you put the backup ;)

When my computer first broke and I didn't know what was wrong I was freaking out over my data... I think I should back up my photos now (though they're nothing particularly special like wedding pictures or anything). I should get an external hard drive though to cover everything else.

Remember, blank cds are cheap, memories are irreplaceable.

External hard drives are a good idea too, great for music and programs.

Especially as, per Gb, external HDDs are as cheap as DVDs now.

Don't get a MyBook, they are very unreliable. Well, the actual harddrive of mine is fine, it's just the connections inside the box which screw up and only work 1/10th of the time.

i've had to take a similar LOA while i moved house and waiting for the internet provider to get their act together. took about 3 weeks to get the internet sorted out here, very frustrating having to travel for 45 minutes just to use the internet. good to be back now though. and welcome back yourself.

I had my desktop for two years and one day it refused to boot. Power supply had finally blown up and took with motherboard with it. Now I have a new PSU, motherboard and a new CPU (old one was working) in the same case.

Added a new memory chip later, but I think the old one is suspect.
Didn't lose Internet time, I have two laptops as well.

Fuck, a rotten PSU, eh? Those are a bitch to replace as they are connected to everything. You basically have to completely disassemble your computer to put a new one in...

It's more a bitch to replace because my PSU is a small one, not a standard one... which means that I get to find a special one or buy a new case.
