bit of a blog but what the hey:
The NZ$ has been increasing consistently over the past several weeks, gaining against the greenback daily. Since the HK$ is pegged against the greenback, this means of course that it's also been rising steadily against the HK$.
It was $1NZ = $5.30HK in February when I last visited NZ. Since then it's skyrocketed, gaining up to 3c a day.
Since I'm heading back to NZ next week, I've been waiting and praying for it to drop, checking xe.com several times a day.
Alas to no avail. Always going up.
Wednesday just gone, I finally gave up the waiting, bit the bullet and exchanged $2000NZ. I was charged $6.396 to the dollar, meaning it cost me $12792HK ($1634US).

Since then, the Kiwi dollar has fallen.

Spectacularly.

It was trading an hour ago at $6.08.
It's now at $5.98.
Had I waited til now (leaving aside that it is 11.20pm here) the $2k NZ would have cost me $11973HK ($1530US).

Thus I have reach the quite obvious conclusion that I have the power to cause monetary markets to crash.
I have the wallet of death.
Beware! It's SuperMoneyScrewupXchange Man!

Anyone else discovered they have some amazing, yet bloody annoying, secret power?

edit:
just to graphically show you lot what I mean by a sudden significant fall:

Back in the day going out to a local fast food place in my parent's old Chevy pickup would invariably cause it to rain, hard, and the truck's windshield wipers come in two speeds: useless and completely useless.

Though that's not nearly as bad as losing over $100US

Get a blog.

I say this because all those numbers mean nothing to me. :(

See if you can get an account denominated in NZ$. That way you can do a little bit at a time instead of all at once, which would help smooth out these fluctuations.

Of course, it would depend upon the fees to see whether or not it was worth it I suppose.

I lost 50 quid cause I went in two days too early to change some money over.

surely you can understand (and, I hope, sympathise with) that!

Aw, fuck, I hate it when that happens. Even though I've never had it happen quite that harshly (clearly because I am not the bearer of the Wallet of Death).

And I'm pretty sure I have such an annoying secret power, I seem to remember several of them, I just can't remember any right now. Bleh.

since i gained possession of my car every time i have taken it out for a drive the nice sunny day has turned to cloud and torrential rain. i think the change of ownership on my car may be responsible for the continued flooding occuring in britain right now cuz it started just after my mum brought the thing up here.

I did in fact have an account at my local bank that was in NZ$ and on term deposit, but I closed a couple of months back cause I needed the money.

I have an HSBC account and can draw $ out while in NZ, but the current bank rates are way better here in HK than in NZ. In Feb as I mentioned I got $5.30 when I exchanged some money here but in NZ they were offering $5.50.

I have thought about depositing $10k back in my account back in NZ and leaving it on term deposit (which is up to 10.0% p.a!). The only hiccup there is the 'k' part. I have the $10, just not the 'k'.
