Maybe he was smoking pot at the time?
But seriously, if this becomes a trend humanity is in real trouble.

Why blame pot? Blame alcohol. It could have also been a possible source, or maybe the guy was just insane to begin with.

That was a joke referring to the "Pot May Be Linked to Psychosis" thread here.

From the news story:
A Navy man who got mad when someone mocked him as a "nerd" over the Internet climbed into his car and drove 1,300 miles from Virginia to Texas to teach the other guy a lesson.
I think it takes a unique kind of person to carry a grudge from Virginia to Texas because he was called a nerd.
As he made his way toward Texas, Fire Controlman 2nd Class Petty Officer Russell Tavares posted photos online showing the welcome signs at several states' borders, as if to prove to his Internet friends that he meant business.
Uniquely psychotic perhaps, but definitely unique. 1300 miles on the road would be enough for most people I know to calm down, but this guy was still pissed enough to set the other guy's trailer on fire. The way he posted the welcome signs as he traveled definitely shows a bit of premeditation.
See as how people were trying to get theft of items from an online game turned into a felony a few years back, I'm not exactly surprised. Someday those sniper smilies are going to turn into hit-teams.

I think they pioneered that concept on the Operation Rescue websites.

It is also saddening that people consider a word that is primarily associated with intelligence and study to be an insult.

well, he's going to go from being a 'nerd' to being a 'bitch' now that he's in prison.
Bet he'll spend those years behind bars wishing he'd stayed a nerd.
China still pwns all in the 'not being able to let internet go' stakes:
'Game theft' led to fatal attack
A Chinese man has been stabbed to death in a row over a sword in online game Legends of Mir 3, say reports.
Shanghai gamer Qiu Chengwei killed player Zhu Caoyuan when he discovered he had sold a "dragon sabre" he had been loaned, said the china Daily.
Mr Chengwei only got the powerful virtual weapon shortly before it was sold for 7,200 yuan (£460).
Before the attack Mr Chengwei told police about the theft who said the weapon was not real property.

Well, in China, they also have the people who died at their keyboard, playing on the Internet for days until they had a heart attack.
They're far more serious about it than we are.
