Thieves steal pool; leave no trace
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12784369/
Wow. Just wow. Just when you think you've heard it all, bam. Thieves find something else to steal. Something bigger and a lot more watery.
The equipment needed to perform this feat probably cost significantly more than the value of the pool itself.

Best. Heist. Ever.
Wait… pools leave patches of dead grass… lawn circles… get a big enough pool, and you can make a circle in a big lawn… a crop circle… it all comes together!
People, arm yourselves and your children! The alien invaders have arrived!

Equipment? It was an inflatable pool. Don't think they would need much equipment. Just some people to carry it away. Only 10ft in diameter.

hip high, filled with about a thousand gallons of water...
and not a trace, drip or splash remained.
No idea how much a thousand gallons is. Sounds a lot though.
I still don't see how it would be hard for like 10-15people to come in and take it. How much would 1,000gallons weigh?

A pump with a hose long enough to either drain into a drainage ditch, creek or street sewer would be required. They could have easily plugged it into an outside socket on the house. When empty a couple of guys could have thrown it in the back of a pickup. Where is the mystery here?

I find your intimate knowledge of pool theft extremely suspicious.

So a thousand Gallons.... 8,345 pounds... 3785 kilograms...

That's just awesome. I'm proud.
Other than the fact, of course, that it's theft.
If they give it back, it'll stay awesome.

Haha, it reminds me of the thieves that stole a 30 metre long bridge in the south island without anyone seeing anything. The bridge had to be put in place by a helicopter.

Bah, that's not so tough. If you want to impress me, you've got to go for a harder target than that: at least steal an in-ground pool.
Or, better yet, steal one of these (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swimming_pool#The_World.27s_Largest_Swimming_Pools).
You don't even need a pump, really. Just extend a hose to the nearest drainage system, and let the siphoning do most of your work for you. Alternatively, deflate the pool, put something very absorbent to soak most of it off the grass, and it's mostly indistinguishable from natural damp.:p

you wouldn't even need a pump really. they could siphon off the water like you would stealing fuel from a car and then when it started to flow attach a longer hose to take the water to the drains. in fact those kind of pools probably have a plug at the bottom that they could attach a hose to. no need to do the siphoning thing then.
edit: dammit, beaten to the punch. must read whole thread first.

How the hell are you going to steal a swimming pool without splashing the water out? especially and inflatable pool that would collapse in on itself.

Swimming pools usually arn't carefully positioned near drains just in case...
They would have needed a crapload of hose and then still you can only get so much water out.

Probably a truck with a large water pump running in reverse could drain the pool pretty quickly. After that, the pool should be easy enough to remove if you use an air pump in reverse to suck it empty.
So anyone here own a really large pool with 4 tons of water? :p
