I think the notice is intended to make the TSA workers more diligent, not intended as a press release to the general public. Hence the TSA's reaction that this wasn't meant as a public announcement.
It's funny you mention that, because the memo is linked at the bottom of the screen and it clearly states at the bottom of the page not to bring this to any member of the media.
But, of course, that'd never happen with a story like this.

They are civil servants. It is illegal to make them 'more diligent". The democrats saw to that many moons ago.

im not worried about hijacking.
but we will never be 100% safe from terrorists being able to blow up a plane or to kill a few people on board a plane before they are subdued.
it would suck to be on a plane where some asshole went to the bathroom and assembled a small bomb that blew a hole in the side of the plane.

thats what i wonder too.
San Diego, July 7. A U.S. person — either a citizen or a foreigner legally here — checked baggage containing two ice packs covered in duct tape. The ice packs had clay inside them rather than the normal blue gel.
Milwaukee, June 4. A U.S. person’s carryon baggage contained wire coil wrapped around a possible initiator, an electrical switch, batteries, three tubes and two blocks of cheese. The bulletin said block cheese has a consistency similar to some explosives.
Houston, Nov. 8, 2006. A U.S. person’s checked baggage contained a plastic bag with a 9-volt battery, wires, a block of brown clay-like minerals and pipes.
Baltimore, Sept. 16, 2006. A couple’s checked baggage contained a plastic bag with a block of processed cheese taped to another plastic bag holding a cellular phone charger.
every one of these people and every one they ever associated with were thoroughly investigated after this. (no it doesnt say that but you know they were) if they belong to some terrorist group, they blew it by getting caught.
more likely these are nutcases who are obsessed with the notion that its possible to take a bomb on a plane so they tried to "prove" it by taking bomb like devices themselves.

They can't arrest you for some wires wrapped around modeling clay.
Also, it desensitizes the screeners over time - "hey look, it's another block of cheese, fuck it".

the "security personel" at airports should be just that-trained and efficient security people.
Not slackers with criminal records themselves, not those slovenly in appearance.
They should also get a bounty for every illegal item they prevent from getting onto a plane. they should get a reward for every person they stop from boarding thats on a no-flight list. A reward for every fake ID they identify and seize.

While we're at it, let's close all the Churches. More terrorist attacks have occurred in America due to White Christian terrorists than "teh ebil Moohamedins", believe it or not.
As well, why don't we just get rid of the First Amendment while we're at it. Fuck freedom of religion, speech, assembly, and all that other crazy hippy stuff. We live in the United States of Oceania, god damn it, and we must protect ourselves at all costs! We are at war with Muslims, we have always been at war with Muslims!

I fly a lot. And this islam nonsense has cost me literally hundreds of hours of hassle over the past few years. Do I get an apology? Do I fuck. No, I get preemptively branded as islamophobic (as if that is even a real word ). So I figure I might as well be anyway. Clearly we need to be focused on the passenger, rather than the stuff he's bringing on board if we have any intention of providing security.

A list of prohibited items should be made plainly on all carrier literature, websites, when tickets are purchsed,ect...
The list should not change as often as it is. Less confusion, no exceptions.
Arrive earlier for your flight. Dont carry any prohibited items.
Airport security should be secure.

You should also blame white terrorists, because as I stated they have committed more acts of terrorism than the others in the west(The IRA, fundementalist Christians, etc). It's not the Islamic community that is causing you mild discomfort(Boo-fucking-hoo, I have to wait a couple extra minutes to get on my plane), it's your government.
And oh! You saw it on TV. God forbid you actually go to a mosque and see what goes on in one, instead seeing likely one or two examples of extremists mosques, and applying that to all mosques. Yeah, that's logic.
And fuck, dude, I've read 1984. I know very well it wasn't a good analogy, but I needed a little pizzaz, and couldn't think of anything else for your little distopian world. So, I chose 1984. Poor analogy? Yes. But I believe the point was gotten across.
So, you fail at life, you fail at debate, and you fail at intelligence.
And yes, that is a petty insult, and I know very well you will say something along the lines of "Oh, you take a juvenile jab at me! That disproves what you said", to which I shall reply "It was for comedic affect only", to which you will say "I find that not funny", to which I say "Oh, but I do". And we are back at square one. I have very strong opinions about the IRA, and I think some US politicians (like Chris Dodd) should be called to account for their continued support of terrorists and terrorist sympathizers. Also, something should have been done about the Catholic Church's tacit approval of the IRA at the time. That's all in the past now though, so it's not really a problem. Yeah, those imams are all happy people.
ROME - Police on Saturday arrested three Moroccans — a Muslim imam and two of his aides — and accused them of running a "terror school" at a small mosque in central Italy, where they allegedly trained in combat, learned about bombs and stashed away chemicals.
Italian anti-terror police said they found barrels of chemicals and instructions on how to pilot a Boeing 747 in the Ponte Felcino mosque on the outskirts of Perugia, a city known for its Renaissance architecture and idyllic countryside. A fourth suspect was being sought.
"The investigation has shown that, in the Ponte Felcino mosque, there was a continued training for terrorist activity," anti-terror police head Carlo De Stefano said. "We have discovered and neutralized a real 'terror school,' which was part of a widespread terrorism system made up of small cells that act on their own."
Police identified the imam as 41-year-old Korchi El Mostapha, and his two aides as Mohamed El Jari, 47, and Driss Safika, 46. A fourth Moroccan suspect was believed to be abroad. All four were suspected of conducting training with the aim of international terrorism.
Police also said in a statement that the suspects had contacts with two members of the Moroccan Islamic Combat group arrested around two years ago in Belgium. The Islamic group — known by its French acronym, GICM — is believed to have ties to al-Qaida and has been linked to the 2004 Madrid train bombings and 2003 attacks in Casablanca, Morocco.
It was not immediately clear if the defendants had retained attorneys.
The modest mosque, on the ground floor of a red-painted residential building, hid chemicals, including acids, nitrates and ferrocyanide, which may have been used to experiment making bombs or poisons, said Claudio Galzerano, head of the international terrorism division within the anti-terror police.
Activities at the mosque used films and documents downloaded from the Internet, and included weapons training, instructions on how to prepare poisons and explosives, as well as how to lay an ambush, reach combat zones safely and send encrypted messages, a police statement said.

There are environmentalists, and there are tree spikers.
There are animals rights activists, and then there is PETA.

You figure out who is evasive when questioned about the purpose of the trip, etc... There's a pretty common set of questions. Questioning takes about two or three minutes and it's very common in countries that realize they can't rely on technology alone to discover any and all attempts at terrorism.
Go through an Israeli airport sometime to see the best screeners at work. The U.S. is definitely lacking when it comes to airport screening. I know this because I travel through many different airports every year.

while my answer does rely on people hired by the bush administration not being idiots...
unless a guy is working utterly alone and plans to give his info to people he doesnt know when he makes the test, even if he is let go he is still thoroughly investigated.
carrying fake bomb parts onto a plane is enough evidence to get a warrant to tap his phone or search his house. if he has been in contact with a terrorist organization, its easy enough to find out.

If I have to go from Atlanta to D.C. and back the same day, it's an option. I would expect to pay about $150 per hour for a decent IFR single. Figure about 4-5 hours ETE and your looking at a charge of about $700 to $800 for the day.
Airtran charges $500 for a next-day round trip ticket purchase. Financially, I've got to pick Airtran and fight the baggage police. Although, if I want to take my family to Orlando, financially it's better to rent a Cherokee 6 or a Lance. Twins are just too much -- try renting a nice Aztec sometime...
