Dubai skyscraper world's tallest
An unfinished skyscraper in the Persian Gulf state of Dubai has become the world's tallest building, its developers say.

Emaar Properties said the 512m (1,680ft) Burj Dubai is now taller than Taiwan's 508m (1,667ft) Taipei 101.

It is thought Burj Dubai will eventually be 693m (2,275ft) tall.

...

When finished, the skyscraper will have more than 160 floors, 56 elevators, apartments, shops, swimming pools, spas, corporate suites, Italian fashion designer Giorgio Armani's first hotel, and an observation platform on the 124th floor.

...

The spire of the building is expected to be able to be seen from 100km (60 miles) away.

You people should do research before shooting off your stupid mouths. Dubai's oil and natural gas is less than 3% GDP, they have been working on switching their economy to tourism for years because they actually know they are going to run out of fossil fuels some day.

From what I hear, those towers are mostly stinkholes now due to immense negligence in maintenance. Which more or less fits in with just about every other government project by Malaysia. There for a good time, but not a long time.

Yes, Dubai is one of like three oil nations that is creating a future beyond oil. They also don't have taxes.

And, they'll be painting a big target on the side, so that when somebody finally realizes that the UAE is more obnoxiously wealthy and glutenous than the US, and closer, the terrorists will have a perfect spot to plant their plane! Wonderful idea, Dubai!

Yeah, I'm sure it's built with a superstructure that would withstand SEVERAL planes, unlike the WTC. There is a small threat after the oil collapse when the Saudi Arabians realize their government made no future for them after oil...

If anything, the UAE will be one of the few countries to thrive post-oil. They've done a lot to diversify away from oil in recent years and have a secure future as a booming financial hub. Not to mention they're one of the more liberal regimes and are making real progress on a lot of issues.

You know, if these countries were smart they would develop a solar power industry...high tech, high value-added, lots of jobs, abundant resources, it's even better than oil in the long term.

Too many countries have invested too much money into Dubai, that no terrorist would dare attack it, lest they lose funding from their national supporters.

Apparently the CN tower doesn't count as a building.

The CN Tower doesn't count as a building, at least not in the sense of the Sears Tower, Taipei 101, or the Dubai skyscraper, which are designed to be used--for office space, stores, hotels, whatever. The CN Tower is simply a "freestanding structure." And the only reason it's so commonly referred to as "freestanding" is because without the adjective, it would be beaten by a television tower in Poland that happens to be supported by guy wires. All the CN Tower represents is yet another attempt by Toronto to be New York and convince itself that it is a world-class city.

To summarize: the CN Tower is not a building.
To summarize the summary: Toronto is not New York.

Fucking dumbasses. Even at the angle the photo was shot, you can tell that the goddamn building is leaning back and to the left.

It's like when you build an equally-thin tower made of Legos. You go too high without enough ground space and sloping, and the damn thing leans. It's called gravity, and these dumb-shit engineers should know better than to endanger the lives of everybody who enters their catastrophe just waiting to happen. Look, even the Empire State Building sways at the higher floors --- and it's one of the sturdiest structures in its class.

If people are going to build structures that tall, they need to be properly designed with gravity in mind, not the increase in size of one's proverbial penis.

It most likely won't, but it's still quite unsafe, especially in the event of a disaster.

Any structure that tall and that thin is, cantilevers and pulleys or not.

I guess I'd be worried about earthquakes in that case. They're somewhat common over there, I thought. Though the risk can't be as bad as the risk in Malaysia, where they didn't seem to mind building one almost as tall.

The point that even if they switch their ecnomy to raise revenue from tourism instead of selling oil they still won't be screwed if the amount of fuel halts largescale tourist activity?

What does Dubai (Dubai Emirate?) use to power the region?

The point is Dubai is the only nation in the world recognizing that the oil supply is finite, especially for their country. But they are capitalizing on every other idiot nation's assumption that it isn't. When their oil supply, specifically theirs, runs too low, their nation and economy won't crash. As a tourist and trading hub, it will be kept afloat as well as it is now.

I'm sure they power their nation like every other nation does, one way or another.

they are also helping to change the stereotype of the middle east being behind the times.
