She was most famous in the 1980's when her and her former husband Jim Bakker, who were the top televangelists at the time, got caught up in a series of big scandals. She was known for wearing excessive amounts of makeup, thus the comment at the start. There was a famous t-shirt when I was a student that had a bunch of pastel smudges and read "I ran into TammyFaye at the mall". Interestingly, she's one of the few Christofacists who was a bit sympathetic to gays.
