Do You Judge a Book by it's Cover?
Do you? Don't you? I know I do! Please be truthful. =]

of course i do. covers are carefully crafted to attract the kind of person who would like to read the book. that can be wrong but with the thousands of books in the store one needs the help.

If the description of the book on the back cover counts, then yes.

I don't know, but Dostoevsky is mind-numbingly dull.

Yes. Yes I do. That and reccomendations
I use the cover to see if it piques my interest. that includes the synopsis/blurb in the back.
it's only after I finish reading the book, I'll cast judgement.

Eh, I look at the covers, read the description on the back and read a few pages.

Are we talking literally or metaphorically here? Because it's no to the first and yes to the second.

Good question. :p I think the poll hints that it's about books in the literal sense. Paper and ink.

Not really. The title and the blurb have some influence, but generally I only go into a bookshop to buy a particular book. And I haven't done that in over a year.

No he isn't. Notes From The Underground is the most amazing book ever.
And I have favourite authors that I read, but if I'm looking for something new it's the title/cover. If it gets my interest I read the back, if it still sounds good I red the first few pages, or first chapter. Except for Choke which I read all of in the store (in 3 sittings though, I never had the time to stay in chapters all say).

True well designed front covers can catch my eye and maybe make me more likely to look at the book but in the end the description makes the decision
Nope..I judge one by its content and theme. I don't judge by the synopsis on the back anymore as I picked one out just because it made it sound interesting. Come to find out after reading the book, the synopsis was nowhere NEAR what the story was about.

Well, then how do you initally know if it is worth reading?

I go by the theme when I pick one out. And when I start reading is when I figure out if it is "worth it".

You never lose when you get your books at the library. ;) Just a friendly word from someone in the library "industry." :p

I look at the title myself, it seems to help :p (if you use that in a human context it makes me look soooo 1760:eek:)
its genre, advertising (location really) and what NSG approves of also help

Well, to some extent I do, I mean, really, covers are a means of getting information about the content of the book or the shape it is in, rejecting relevant information is stupid, therefore in my judgment I use the cover and thus judge based upon it.
