The 72 Virgins thing is from the Hadith. Definitely about females, pretty explicit about defining "virgin" too. I'm no scholar, nor do I read Arabic. The Guardian (http://www.guardian.co.uk/saturday_review/story/0,3605,631332,00.html) is good enough for me.

What has me curious is where the number 72 came from ? Like "Hey, my virgins. One, two, three, ... oh never mind."

I think the point is, it's worst to be humiliated by defeat and occupation, to be persecuted and enslaved, than to be straight out killed. And if we know one thing about the Arabs, they don't like having to submit.

Basically it says it's better to die on your feet than live on your knees, but just like Jesus' "Give the guy your shirt too" thing, it's understood that while you should always resist oppression, throwing your life away - inviting genocide - helps no-one.

On a side note, several sources [Sunan al-Tirmidhi (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunan_al-Tirmidhi) for example] explicitly say that killing innocent, exemplified with bystanders, results in an afterlife where you re-live that fate yourself, over and over for eternity. So virgils, sturgeons or no, terrorist bombers won't be getting any. Also says the reward for suicide is to re-live the act for eternity.. Not quite sure how the combination works out.

My knowledge of Islam is completely anecdotal, but the virgin thing is apparently not dogma, so I shouldn't think most people with dreams of martyrdom count on that kind of payoff. Likely they're just pissed off.Made me laugh.So did your sturgeons :p

The context is the dead guy is rewarded a huge chunk of fertile land, an enormous palace, a small army of servants, and 72 wives (who're virgins, because that's what the ideal wives were/are). I can't imagine how it could possibly be grapes.. But again, I'm no authority on Islam. I linked to the wiki entry on the (to the best of my knowledge) most popular version of the relevant Hadith earlier. I'm pretty sure I checked there were links to translations. I meant to anyway.
