Iraq War

Alright, so I played a source mod called 'insurgency' at a lan the other day, and it got me thinking, the current Iraq war is excellent material for a game, maybe even an opportunity for an RTS to actually get asymmetrical warfare done correctly (which has yet to be really done) or even a really good counter-insurgency multiplayer ffs or whatnot.

So, what do you think, it is callus or bad to make games about ongoing conflicts, and do you think this is a good idea?

Aren't games already out about the war? And I don't really care but I wouldn't buy one.

only the first one that had a ending ,a game about this one would never end

There's plenty out about Operation Desert Storm, yet none about the Iran-Iraq War (damn americans, figures) and only 1 so far I believe about the current one, a hl source mod called insurgency, it's still a beta but quite fun, it's not really an 'insurgency' game though, both sides only limited to assault rifles (M4 and AK) etc...

I don't think it would be that great, endless desert is rather boring IMO.

If it wasn't for Americans, you'd probably bet the target of alot of terroist bombings.

There's a C&C Generals mod (http://commandandconquer.filefront.com/file/Iraqi_Resistance_Mod;61777) out.

There's also Joint Task Force- not really based on the Iraq war, but a bit similar.

Doesn't make sense.. Games based on daily facts get boring after a while.. Long live futuristic warfare like C&C Generals and Halo 3 (soon to come).. Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, UT3.. You name it and people will love it lol.. C'mon who'd like a game where your Final Mission is called :

1.1 Trace Saddam and guide him to the extraction point.
1.2 Find your way through Taliban roadblocks using the jeeps located in the enemy base
1.3 Escape over the border

Sub-objectives:

- Acquire military data
- Keep Saddam alive
- Silent insertion and extraction

Erm it'd be quite hard to do an insurgency / counter-insurgency game to be honest.

Mainly because the insurgency side would mainly be "go to work... save $1 a day for a year until you have enough to bribe the Iraqi army to get you an AK47 and 3 clips"
*1 year later*
"take a pot-shot at the Minister for Culture... miss... and immediately get gunned down by his well-trained bodyguard"

Whereas the counter-insurgency side would be like "talk to people for a year and gain their trust enough to tell you who a low-level minion is... find them... accidentally shoot them and hence ruin the trail of evidence leading to the big boss..."
*mainly repeat*

The closest we'll get for a while is Combat Mission : Shock Force which has just been released, it has the usual kind of insurgency-esque stuff.

If you have it on the premise of helping the war and solving problems in counter insurgency I think it is a bad idea. It would also help insurgent tactics and with the younger generations being brainwashed into thinking America is the "real" problem it would probably boost home grown terrorism too. You can bet the military already has something similiar for low level tactical training but wouldnt want it in the hands of the wrong people or the public for obvious reasons. Also, it would stir up huge debate, especially with the nutroots thinking it is some kind of recruiting conspiracy. Its a nice idea and would be fun, but from a broader perspective it is too unpredictable and dangerous to distribute it among the public.

Actually, very little of the fighting takes place in the open desert. Most of it takes place in town. Also, there's quite a bit of greenery near the rivers.

Seems to me that all you'd need to do is adjust currently available "fire team" games like Rainbow Six and the like.

You HAD a videogame about Iraq.

It was called "Operation Desert Storm", released in 1990. There weren't many controllers available to those outside Iraq at the time, but...
