The need for speed...

What was the fastest speed you ever got to in a car? Where was it? What sort of car? Did you drive yourself?
Tell the story!
The fastest speed I ever reached myself was yesterday night in my Clio 172 on a straight bit of road on the way back towards the pizza restaurant. I turned into the road in third gear and just decided to floor it and not change up. Since second gear is just good for 100km/h (60mph) I got to 140km/h+ (87mph+) (I wasn't paying that much attention to the dials, I thought it would be better to keep my eyes on the road :p) but by then the car was bouncing like hell because they can't built a flat road out here, so I backed off. I expect to beat that though when I go to the dragstrip in a week or so. Youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYNMThDDEkw) says I should.
But the fastest I ever went in a car was with my dad driving on the Autobahn in my grandfather's S-Class Mercedes. We hit the 250km/h limiter, and by then things were going very quickly indeed. I have to admit I was scared just a little bit...

personally on the roads i stick to being 5-7 mph over the speed limit on city roads and on the interstate i go 10mph over. that is if no one else is around. if the rest of traffic is going 20+ over the speed limit i will keep up with them. i personally try to avoid unnecessary payment to my state treasury.
fastest i have been in a car going is 120 mph (193.12 km/h) in england ridding with an old friend of my parents

No.
Porsche sells four model lines right now, the Carrera GT was a seperate 5th line but production ended a few months ago.
There's the Boxter, which is a small roadster (also available in "S" version). The Cayman is similar but has a hardtop and more power (and yet more in "S" guise).
The Cayenne is the SUV, of which there are normal, "S" and "Turbo" versions.
The "normal" Porsche is the 911. Of that there's normal Carrera, Carrera S, cabrio, targa and all-wheel drive versions as well as the more hardcore Turbo (all-wheel drive and a massive turbocharger on top), the GT3 (rear-wheel drive and really racing-focused suspension set-up as well as weight minimisation) and the GT2 (rear-wheel drive and an even bigger turbo).

I got a ticket once for doing 108 in a 55.....but I think I was probably going faster than that, because I started slowing down when I heard on my CB that there was a cop ahead.
I was young and stupid.
My excuse to the cop was "there was a good song on the radio and I wasn't paying attention"......he proceeded to rip me a new one and give me a $200 ticket......and he suspended my license for 2 weeks.:(
I don't speed often now.......well, every day but not like that bad, just like going 30 in a 25 because I don't realize it.

Something about the clean lines...when Porsche started beefing the cars up with body kits in the 80's 90's I was really disappointed.

It's a Carrera GT, the seperate supercar line.
The GT2 and GT3 are versions of the 911. As great as those are, they couldn't keep up with a Veyron. Even a Carrera GT is going to have its work cut out big time.
Its not the Boxter (yuck!) nor the Cheyenne...
I'll have to have a drive in a Boxster some time. Everyone who drives it says it's an awesome car (and that includes proper drivers), and once I finish uni a used one should be well within my price range...
As for the Cayenne, I think it's ugly and I think people who drive it are a bit daft. But on the other hand, it saved Porsche's financial future and allowed it to make the great cars they sell today. If it hadn't been for the Cayenne Porsche would have been bought by some nob and who knows what they'd be making today.

Sometimes in six-speeders the sixth gear is a cruising ratio, which means that top speed could actually be in fifth. But that depends on the car...since the GTS isn't a tourer I would think it wouldn't be the case with your car.

Ahhh thanks....in the vid there was little chance for the Veyron to really open up after the Porsche joined...but given that it was blowing away the R1 earlier on I doubt the Porsche would have stood a chance. Maybe that 917 on a race track....maybe...be a cool race though ;)
The thing I don't like about the Boxter is not the car itself but rather those who drive it. Yes I am opinionated and quite frankly its like every HR blond floozy drives one
Or by blokes who really should know better. Unless you are willing to really drive it there is no point in having a decent car. /rant
I have to admit I was surprised (eventually...in fact it was someone here who changed my mind on another car thread) that the Cheyenne proved to be so successful. Kudos.
I still think its an abomination.
The newer cars are getting back to the clean lines which I admire in the older cars (not the 944 btw! LOL)...you have to say that the Germans have done very well in keeping a great marque going for so long. Unlike the British. :headbang:

A little over 100, and I'm not sure each time.
On a really straight road in high school in my big Chevy, the car kept pulling as the speed wand (the only way to describe that sunrise/sunset style across the dash speedometer) slammed harder and harder at 100.
Did the same thing on Folsom/Auburn road, got caught by the cop as I was on the brakes at 86mph crossing into the left hand turn lane to set myself up for a 100 degree right hand turn. He thought I was trying to run for it, I just didn't see him way back there. That was a fun ticket...
In my 914 going up Highway 1 on the California coast a hot rod pickup mixed it up with me. I'd get schooled on straights pegged at around 115, but when the road got twisty and climby I would skirt by. That went on until he had to stop for gas. 30 mpg won the 'race,' though I doubt at those speeds that was what I was getting.
In a endurance racing kart I did something around 110 mph at Sears Point Raceway. Without brakes, as it turned out. So that was not as cool as it could have been.
And I spun on the second lap on turn 2, an off camber uphill right hander. It's where the NASCAR guys always crash on the first lap as their steering wheels suddenly turn in an unfamiliar direction.
The sketchiest, aside from 75-80 mph over the Folsom Dam after rain was in a 928 some salesman was inexplicably letting me test drive, where I hit a cool 80 some mph on a suburban street. Too easy to do in that car, it might have made the move in preference for me from big hog movers to small nimble cars. Getting to 80 just seemed too easy. But carving a mountain road, different animal.

You're lucky. I'm still on probation...if I get caught doing anything at all I'll lose my license for six months. My crime? Going 15km/h over twice within a year.
In my friends Peugeot 206 we hit 135mph(217km/h) on the motorway (M25 I believe). That is almost double the national speed limit. The car started shaking so we slowed down...

The fastest I've ever gone is 225km/h or 140mph when I lived in Germany. I was getting ready to go back to the States and had already shipped my car, so my buddy let me borrow his Nissan 300z while he was at work. However, I used to routinely cruise around Germany at 200km/h or 125mph which was where the limiter on my Mini was.

Fastest I've ever driven is 100mph (bang on according to the speedo, I think, so probably 98-99mph actual) in my Rover 218 SLD. I just wanted to get it that fast, it has more go in it but I didn't have much more road to "go" with sensibly.
Before that it was 96mph (again, according to the speedo) in a Fiat Panda 750 (769CCs of RAW POWER!). You had to turn everything off, plus have a hill and a tail-wind :p

Back in the mid 80's my friend had a '74 Charger RS. Coming back from an out of town job we were on the highway when I remarked that it was odd to see a speedometer that went so high (160 mph), and that I doubted his car could go that fast. Big mistake. Next thing I knew that speedometer was buried and we were still going faster, passing traffic like it was standing still. The car started to shake a bit so he let off a bit, but the speedo remained buried. After about ten or so minutes of this I pointed out that if a tire blew out we both be dead. Finally he relented and resumed a normal speed. I asked him how fast did he think we were going and I'll never forget his reply, " The shaking starts a 175"
