Off my tree

In true Queensland government style, police have raided Brisbane retailer "Off Ya Tree", seizing hundreds of alleged "ice pipes" and "bongs". The fact that whilst laws brought in last year prohibiting the selling of "water pipes that are for the use of inhaling marijuana", actually allow retailers to sell cocaine kits and water pipes sold without an intention for illicit use, is something that is beyond out law makers.

The moral of this story: Rotovia had to make his own bong last week, and is not happy about it!

What exactly is a bong, anyway? I know it's used to smoke various drugs, but how does it work?

Thermal expansion - you know. It's all quite technical.

You don't need to know how something works to enjoy it.;)

Just look at any teenage girl with a cell phone.

I was hoping for a detailed explanation, preferably from someone who knows how to build a bong and use it effectively.

You can use a plastic soft drink bottle for a chamber, but I have no clue what you could use for a bowl.

As for effective use: Load the bowl, light up, fill the chamber, then inhale.

It's harder to explain on line.. but here is how a bong works.

You may have three chambers one for the intake of smoke including the bowl, the water chamber and the release chamber which may just be the top or tubing with a stoper chokepoint.

When the bowl is lit you suck in on the intake - not all bongs require this as some have pressurization mechanism or even seperate intakes to get the smoke to go in.

The water itself is said to "cool down" if you use cold water but other liquids can be used with differing effects. You can use it for flavouring or accumulating toxic bong water/liquid mixtures.

Bongs themselves are supose can be used to accumulate smoke and manage smoke intake by using the stopper.

It is much easier to understand in person.

This is just what I've learned I could be mistaken so if indoubt check it out yourself.

But from what I know of chemistry and physics - it is a rather simple presurization and 'smoke flow' utensil.

Vapourization of marijuna I think is still the least harmful as far as carcinogens are concerned though, as far as I'm aware.. I'm not sure if bhangs have high tar and carcinogen counts.. it isn't burned but I'm not sure if the hotwater/oil etc.. take a lot of the stuff that would come out in smoking as well, but something to look into I guess.

Okay, so basically the chamber is a tube that fits snugly over the bowl to capture all of the smoke, and you inhale through the chamber?

Take an ordinary drink bottle, use a lighter to make one medium sized hole on one side and a tiny hole on the other. Into the medium sized hole, insert a section of hose pipe. Using either a premade "cone piece" or aluminum foil fashioned into a small cone shape, place the point of the cone into the hose opening. If you have made your own "cone piece" ensure it sits snugly into the hose and that in the point of the cone, there is a hole large enough for smoke to come through, but small enough that your "tobacco" will not. The hose pipe should come in at a diagonal and you should fill the bottle so that the bottom of the hose is covered. The tiny hole (or "shotty") will need to be high enough on the bottle so that it can be filled with water sufficantly, but low enough so that is comfortable to use.

No, sprinkle some "tobacco" into the cone-piece. Use a lighter to ignite the "tobacco", placing your thumb over the small hole and your mouth on the bottle opening. Inhale; this will cause smoke to be pulled out of the cone-piece and through the water (which acts as a filter).

There will often be smoke left in the "chamber", that is the inside of the bottle. By placing your hand over the bottle opening you can avoid this being wasted. This is where he second hole come in. By removing your thumb from the tiny hole, it will allow the smoke stuck in the chamber to be inhaled.

With cone sizes (the amount of weed put into the cone-piece) less is more, is a good rule. There is nothing worse than trying to pull a massive cone and having to hand it over to someone else.

I almost forgot to ask the question I was looking to see answered when I first saw this thread! Wouldn't want that to happen, after all. :p

What's the meaning of "Off Ya Tree" in Australian English? Haven't heard that one. :)

I used to make bongs out of Mountain dew bottles and straws.....and crap.

I was like the bong MacGyver.

if you can't make your own pipe or bong you aren't smart enough to smoke pot....

that's the honest truth.

also, I made a really cool pipe out of one of these once.... still have it.

Here's one a prepared earlier. Notice the fine craftmanship, in the form of blutac applied to prevent air escaping from the over-sized hole I made when I was high.

Further note, the use of a government water bottle. I think the irony is worth having "count you drinks for better health" written on my bong.

There are such things as government water bottles? What the hell, man? You Australians have the gall to call us dictatorial when we don't have that sort of thing?!

But yes, the irony definitely makes it worth it.

They give them out to kids at Schoolies Week (somewhat like your Spring Break) and they used to have them at nightclubs. It's good to know our government is supporting 16 years olds on E

Ah...I don't know if the government does the same thing for nightclubs here--probably not, as they definitely don't for Spring Break--but if they did they'd probably be bottled water from some company, not the government itself. Yay for corporate democracy.

We have a hard enough time getting that stuff when stuck living in a disaster area, I think it's safe to say. :p I remember drinking government water for a week during a watermain malfunction in school, but it didn't have nifty bottles. :(

Oh, I know, I know...we're both quite pathetic. Good thing I'm moving to Canada, eh?

Oh really? Sheesh...my sympathies. I've never had to go through that...worst I've experienced was a tornado that passed near my elementary school when I lived in Ohio, and it didn't harm a fly.
