At 41st Street and Lexington Ave. a steam pipe blew. So is our infistruture to old? New York, Boston and other cities have very old infistruture including miles, and miles of underground pipes.

Too old? Absolutely. A lot of it is crumbling thanks to decades of underfunding and neglect, which in turn is due to the fact that people bitch nonstop about taxes and forget what exactly those taxes are used for.

I recall that the American Society of Civil Engineers gave the US infrastructure a grade of "D", barely passing. Based upon their estimates, $1.6 trillion worth of investment over five years will be needed to restore it to good condition.

Of where? Believe it or not, spouting off street names won't help on a forum where people don't have intimate local knowledge of wherever you live.

Sorry, but it's one of my pet peeves on NSG when people assume we know anything about wherever it is they live. When you say Midtown to me it means either Midtown Detroit or Midtown Toronto, and I know it wasn't either of those.

I assumed he meant the big blow-up yesterday in Manhattan. The pipe was installed in the 20s, I think.

which just goes to show that New York had to blow off some steam. :p

Glad no one was seriously hurt... or at least I didn't hear of anyone seriously hurt.

I haven't read about it since last night, but they said there was one dead, 20 injured at that point. Bad luck, there.

Fortunately, none of my parents work in the city these days.

And it's not Avenue des Champs-Elysees, but I don't think it's *that* far behind...

Apologies for topic inturruption, but what exactly is 'steam'? How do you run a train on water vapour?

I hadn't heard about it. I get all my news from the Detroit and Lansing papers and France24 these days.

You don't the subway runs on electricity now if your confusing that. If you meant like the 1800's very simple, steam pushs a turbine, which push gears, which push the wheels foward.

Sorry, I was just following what the news in general says. Most people understand what I was trying to imply.

Indeed, indeed.

Here's that story from 2005: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7137552/
And Here's the "Report Card": http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/7137894/
And it's not just public infrastructure. Oil refineries are at the breaking point. http://www.nytimes.com/2007/07/22/business/22refine.html?ei=5065&en=652e82b4f396b467&ex=1185681600&partner=MYWAY&pagewanted=print

Several years ago, Wired ran "Newer York, Newer York" (http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/8.01/futuretekture.html), a nice little peice of speculation about a rather spectacular failure of the NYC infrastructure brought on by a greenhouse summer.

The infrastructure is old. I'm not so sure about the "infistruture".

Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007_New_York_City_steam_explosion)(after only like 3 days tops!wow!!)

Err... 1) It was up on the day it happened. 2) Usually big news stories like this make it on there within hours of breaking (at least in my sexperience), so three days would be more "wow, why so slow?"

LA Times (http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-na-steamblast19jul19,0,2071093.story), Even Australia! (http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,25197,22097671-2703,00.html)

Why would a big news story like that, which made headlines all over the world, not make the news in Australia because it's far away? Just because it's far away doesn't mean they don't get news there. It would be weird if there wasn't a story on it in the Aussie press.

Personally, I am waiting for the No.1 water main to fail. Let's see how much those fancy Battery Park City condos cost when you can't flush the toilet.

Have a read of the Bruce Sterling story from Wired I linked above. It tells a tale of what happens when you combine a really hot summer, old electrical mains, and gas mains.
