Empire or Rebel alliance?

After sitting here at my computer listening to the Imperial march, I have been inspired to create this topic. Ok, if you had to choose sides during the galatic civil war(without knowing the outcome), which side would you go with. Choose wisely for the Emperor does not like morons.

The Empire. For the most part it was 1) strong vs outside threats (a serious problem for the previous Republic and the New Republic), and 2) it was fairly benevolent. If you wanted to leave Imperial space you could if you felt like it; the Empire didn't crush people's livelihoods on large scales except when at war - loyal worlds were not punished if they were not treasonous.

I don't understand why, it isn't like that did anything all that bad. Sure, they blew up a planet or two, but that was about the smallest thing their soldiers could reliably hit.
And at least the Emperor paddled his own cannoe, rather than relying upon the assistance of whatever species of hand puppets he happened to find inhabiting the area.

Anyway, a lot of the books are really good. All the novel versions of the movies are about fifty times more intelligent than the movies, and the other hundreds of star wars books and comics are almost all above the average sci-fi or fantasy fare.

At first, the Rebels. I mean, the Empire have troops that cant aim, has fighters that are destroyed with one shot, and if you fail once you die in agony due to being chocked by a freak.

BUT, considering the Rebels had their asses kicked by the Empire, I dont think they are a good choice either.

So, I would either be a mercenary or the GOD OF THE UNIVERSE, since I would be the only person who was smart enouhg to figure out that if want to kill a jedi, use bullets, not beams of light.

Had you watched the movie, you would have seen that the Imperials got friggin ambushed. They just saw two droids, not a whole army of camaflouged midgets.

Even so, their strategic planning was deplorable, suggesting a failure at the highest levels of command. Why didn't the Empire bombard the the whole planet from space before moving their facilities in? And why didn't they dispatch all available troops to protect such critical infrastructure? The base defenses were laughable and their utter lack of real reconnaissance was deplorable.

I mean, I would have exterminated all sentient life on the planet prior to using it for such a crucial facility and then spare no expense on its defenses, even up to including an ion cannon for disabling orbital attack.
Maldorians

I mean, I would have exterminated all sentient life on the planet prior to using it for such a crucial facility.

Well, when the Empire was new, they carpet bombed basically every planet. This, unfortunately, resutled in many uprisings and assassination attempts on Darth Vader himself.

Remember, although Endor was an important planet, there were millions of soldiers on the Death Star, Star Destroyers, and capital worlds, such as Coruscant. AND remember that the Rebels took the back entrance, not the main entrance which had an AT-AT, landing pad, etc.

But, of course, Endor was presumably uninhabited and forgotten. They could have done it with little or no repercussion.

That's true. It seems more of a case of arrogance than anything else; they didn't learn from the destruction of the first Death Star and so made an equally as foolish mistake that ended up costing them control over most of the galaxy.

Of course, had the Emperor and his most elite government and military staff not gone there in the first place, the destruction of the second DS wouldn't really have mattered. The Rebels would have won at best a Pyhrric victory, or most likely even suffered a strategic loss due to the sacrifice of so many pilots, ships, and capitol ships. The Empire could fight a war of attrition indefinitely, while the Rebels couldn't.

True true. Then they became the Imperial Remnants with Grand Admiral Thrawn. He and his fleet still had a crapload of ships to fight the New Republic *or New Alliance was it?* until the Yuzan-Vong Invasion.

Yes, it was nearly impervious to most projectiles like arrows and spears.

Big ass rocks and other concussive weapons, on the other hand, could easily kill an armored person without penetrating the armor (the pole-hammer is designed around that idea).

Oh? And how is that? We actually know very little about the Empire itself. (OK, Tarkin was evil too, but there's always a couple of psychotic leaders among those good and honorable ones...)

My point is, however, that according to most writings which explore the Empire more deeply than shown in the movies (remember, the movies were mostly told from the point of the enemies of the Empire; surely they see Empire as evil), the Empire has done much during in it's existence. And, according to those EU stories I've read, there are still many of those who long afted the Empire during the days of the New Republic (i.e. the Rebel Alliance).

It is quite clear in the EU that the empire practiced slavery and genocide. This, along with its lack of civilian leadership makes it unacceptable. Just because there are some good men in the Empire, does not make the Empire good.
