Hate to break it to you, but it's not that way now. A whole lot of people are heterosexual without reproducing. My own heterosexual relationships have never been about reproduction (and hopefully never will be!).

Look, English might not be my forte, but I was sure that "what's the big deal" means "what's so special". And heterosexuals have that choice people of other orientations don't – to have the offspring that is related to them. So until we make breakthroughs in cloning and recombination techniques THAT'S what so special about heterosexuality. Oh, that and not being actively persecuted in many countries of the world.

No, I'm not a lesbian. Like I said, feeling left out in all the sexuality threads. Sure, we can be friends!

Not true, really -- a lesbian can have a child related to her, and a gay man can also have a child related to him. Neither one is incapable of reproduction.

True enough.
Can't tell you how often I've been told that I'd be bi or a lesbian if I'd only try it.... and while I was in college, had to go and have a talk with a group of lesbians and bis who wouldn't take no for an answer from some ladies in the club I was running.

But you get assholes who don't take no for an answer and insist they'll "straighten out" your sexual orientation from ALL orientations.

If you want to run with that interpretation, sure. And it's still not true.

And heterosexuals have that choice people of other orientations don't – to have the offspring that is related to them.

1) A great many heterosexuals DON'T have that choice. Ability to produce offspring is not a requirement for heterosexuality.
2) Homosexuals also have that option. Homosexuals can engage in procreative sexual activity, just as heterosexuals can engage in non-procreative sexual activity.

So until we make breakthroughs in cloning and recombination techniques THAT'S what so special about heterosexuality.

Again, I simply don't agree. Heterosexuality is not a requirement for producing biological offspring. Never has been.

Intercourse between a fertile male and fertile female is the long-standing requirement for procreation. The sexual orientation of the parties involved is irrelevant. A fertile homosexual male with a fertile homosexual female have more chance of producing biological offspring together than an infertile heterosexual couple.

Meanwhile, a great many people (like myself) deliberately and intentionally exclude the possibility of procreation from our heterosexual sex lives. Procreation is obviously not what makes hetero sex special to folks like me.

Oh, that and not being actively persecuted in many countries of the world.
Now you may be on to something.

Ah, and so many people here say I'm lying when I say that numerous gay men have hit on me and won't take no for an answer.

I think, however, that it's far more common for a man to hit on a woman, and no matter how many times she says no, he doesn't get it.

I was imprecise, so let me rephrase my statement.
Heterosexual couples have the choice people of other orientations don't: to have offspring related to both partners. Whether it is a big deal or not depends on individual case. But that's pretty much all that is special about heterosexuality in modern societies. And it won't stay for long like that, now that we started to tinker with our genes.

More that educated women have fewer children. There are solid correlations between women's education and declining birth rates all across the world, for a number of potential reasons, ranging from having a longer work-week (or a work-week, period) to a simple desire to not procreate and turn that potential energy towards other pursuits.

Not to mention IVF and anonymous donors, which have nothing to do with heterosexuality and can still lead to reproduction.

Not to mention that, apparently, the science exists to fertilize an egg with material from another egg. So lesbian couples can now have children (though only female children) without having to look for a sperm donor.

Thing is, long-term homosexual relationships are more likely to be amongst the more affluent, and therefore theoretically smarter, element because of the benefits such don't bring; therefore, opening up reproduction to them can't be bad!

Gasp. But...but...women can only contribute by making babies! I never said you didn't. And if I made it sound like I was criticising you I'm sorry. I was making the observation that a lot of the strong, successful members of the species aren't contributing in that manner which I find interesting because it's my understanding that normally it's the weakling who don't contribute. In fact just this morning I made the following post.

One of the wonderful things about humanity is that we don't need to leave a biological legacy. The greatest legacies are the words and works of others.

You can do the same thing with male nuclear (mostly DNA) material, you just need a donor egg to house the combined material. The real stickler is how to remethylate to make a female/male sequence register as a male/female sequence.

Here in Poland (and not only here I think) it largely depends on who does the accepting. In small towns, among less educated and older people it's hard to be gay or to have gay friends. In big cities and among younger, better educated folk it's considered "cool". I have yet to meet someone from here who treats the gay people normally ie doesn't give a shit.

Couples without dependents are richer, because they have fewer expenses. Mmm, yes.
Therefore, they are smarter. Only if you believe that reproducing isn't smart.
Opening up reproduction to them can't be bad. Right. It might be neutral or it might be good, or even an action in which morality (good / bad) does not apply.

Heterosexuality greatly increases your carbon imprint because babies are made of carbon.

Therefore I propose a huge tax on giving birth that goes towards alternative energy research.

Winner of thread?

Dude, that's not evil. Innocent virgins deserve to die.
I don't know what happened in between the OP and this post, but I am wholly in support of the brave men and women that made it happen.

Is that an inference to the OP nature of the thread? :p

You missed some of the other stuff that happened. I assume you wouldn't support much of that.

Not only did stuff HAPPEN, but a copycat thread BY A MOD was SPLIT into two threads for posterity. Far out.

Ignoring four people pointing out that this is a copycat thread and thus illegal. Nope, no Mod Bias here.:p

The subject is sufficiently different to 'asexuality' that it's not really a copycat thread. Or as they will henceforth be known, Copy Kat thread. ;)

The charge of "making a chat thread" would probably stick. Or as THAT will henceforth be known, a Khat Thread.

Honestly, I think it was an experiment to see if the eighteen 'asexuals' would all crowd in and start giving the heteros advice on their sexuality. The point seems to be made ...
Tho, I'm not sure I'm done yet.

Babies should be taxed by birthweight, perhaps ?
And for alternative energy sources, the solution is staring us in the face. Treadmills. For babies.

Think about it. Lots of menthol and related substances. Makes me wonder if anyone goes for the two-fer and uses Vick's Vapo-rub (combination of vaselinity and menthol).

Actually a bad idea. Petroleum derivatives weaken latex, only water-based lube should be used with condoms.
How would I know a thing like that ? Government advertising, back in the days when HIV was a death-sentence.
There are non-latex condoms I guess.

I wouldn't say so. One of my old room mates at my previous university was bi. Cool fellow. Drank a bit too much.

I have been told by at least 3 mods that copycat/parody threads are NOT illegal, but that a trend where you get like 4 or 5 on the first page results in some lockings.

Yeah, I know all that, thanks Dad.

Not everyone needs to use condoms. Married couples/monogamous couples who've been tested. I'm all for stopping the spread of HIV, but let's not use the raincoats if we don't need to.

I mentioned it because I saw a reckless suggestion which needed qualification. IF using condoms (particularly with someone you don't know well) using Vaporub would be risky.

But while we're on this tangent, isn't a fisherman's friend an anaesthetic mint ? Not really a lubricant? And marriage is no assurance of fidelity (old fashioned word for ya) and monogamy is only that until one partner finds out otherwise. Oh, and HIV isn't the only venereal disease, there's a lag time in tests, and you don't know you "need" a condom until it's too late.

I'll pay the old "like taking a shower in a raincoat" reference though. Condoms are definitely a bore.

Don't let me stop you (use chilli sauce for all I care) but I feel obliged to point out a possible risk in your no-doubt lighthearted speculation.
