I always thought Internet Explorer was fine, but then I tried Firefox and have never switched back. The gap between the two is much narrower now that IE has tabbed browsing too, but I stick with FF now for familiarity as much as anything.

And the built in spell checker is one of those things that is so simple you wonder why no one thought of it before, but so brilliant you don't know what you'd do without it anymore. :p

^ZDaemon (www.zdaemon.org). But then again, that requires a non-open-source file to operate (a Doom .wad), so...I dunno, I don't know enough about open-source to tell you. But so far Firefox proves itself worthier than zDaemon if only for the fact that it works on the Mac, PC, and Linux at the same time and zDaemon decides it would be hilarious to work with everything but Mac OS X.
To answer the topic question: Safari. Firefox for the Mac is a bit clunkier interface-wise and generally not as visually appealing as Safari, but I still use it because it works with the things that Safari just refuses to have anything to do with.

Plenty of people thought of it before and several open source browsers had spell checking long before Firefox. In fact, even Firefox had spell checking before Firefox had spell checking through a separate extension. There is nothing new to it, and especially nothing that Firefox introduced.

Various things. The developers are rude to bug submitters(click that webcomic's about page for an example), if you want to distribute Firefox (say with a Linux distribution) you have to get you patches approved by Mozilla or else you cannot call it Firefox or use the logo, the name and logo are propriety, it is quite bloated, etc.

Mac OS X can run Linux binaries. On the included cd/dvd/floppy there should be something called X11/X Server/X Windowing System (same shit, I just do not know which name Apple used). Install that, and you can begin installing your favorite Linux applications.

It's been a while since I've had it installed, so I don't really recall. Some media wouldn't run, even with the old plug-ins still current, though, and the bulletin board I read for my job info wouldn't run with Firefox, although there was a big "won't run with Firefox" warning on the bulletin board front page, so that might've been by design.

i used to be the same, and still would use IE if i didn't just prefer the way Opera works. Avast antivirus is free, and i paid for AdAware on-access scanning program thingy, so security isn't too much of an issue with me. since i've been using those progams (for like... years), and put them on all the computers in this office, even though most here use IE we haven't had any malware, spyware, or viruses in years :)

some pages don't load quite right, no. but that's very rare and usually just a browser incompatibility the webdesigner overlooked.

i like how customisable the interface is, being able to customise every litte thing, the sliding sidebar (on both sides), and i just prefer the way tabs work in Opera over FF or IE7. the speed dial also rules.

i barely use the widgets. FF extentions are way better, but Opera does the most important things (adblock, transfer monitoring, bittorrent, RSS reader, email, etc) built in.

IE already had security negatives, and with version 7, it is 20x harder to use because for some reason, to fit stuff on there that fits with no problem on Firefox and (I assume) Opera, they felt they needed to cram all of their options and drop down menus into two buttons on the side of the screen and mix their bookmarks and history together in the same tab.

A bookmarklet would be a bookmark that executes a small script, like javascript:(function(){ var e,s; IB=1; function isDigit(c) { return (%220%22 <= c && c <= %229%22) } L = location.href; LL = L.length; for (e=LL-1; e>=0; --e) if (isDigit(L.charAt(e))) { for(s=e-1; s>=0; --s) if (!isDigit(L.charAt(s))) break; break; } ++s; if (e<0) return; oldNum = L.substring(s,e+1); newNum = %22%22 + (parseInt(oldNum,10) + IB); while (newNum.length < oldNum.length) newNum = %220%22 + newNum; location.href = L.substring(0,s) + newNum + L.slice(e+1); })();
Which in this example increments the last number in an url so you go to the next page. (i.e. e.g. www.some.site.com/1.html -> www.some.site.com/2.html )

Surely one can write a basic shellscript for that ? Which is both easier and less of a security risk.

For this specific purpose - of browsing to next page, like in Forum - Opera has FastForward function which works like forward button when 'in history' (ie. back button was used) but works like next likely page when pressed normally.

Though if you were to create HTML anchor link you could drag that piece of code into Opera interface (and/or bookmark list) and use it.

I suppose that does open some possibilities. I can't say whether that would be easier, or why it would be more secure, though.
And I somehow doubt you can make full use of the DOM easily to change things on a page with a shellscript. The up/down bookmarklets are just a trivial examples, there's far more interesting things you can do. But I don't know how shellscripts interact with konqueror well enough to say if similar things can't be done there.

Is there also a greasemonkey-like extension for konqueror? (Which allows you to run userscripts automatically when loading a page; changing it in basically whatever way you desire)

What I just realized is that it's not Safari itself that's fast, it's Apple's Web Kit. So third party browsers (like Shiira) that use the Web Kit are just as fast as Safariā€¦ and can have icons with fish in them! WOW!

Mac OS X can run Linux binaries. On the included cd/dvd/floppy there should be something called X11/X Server/X Windowing System (same shit, I just do not know which name Apple used). Install that, and you can begin installing your favorite Linux applications.

:O?
I'll look into it. Thanks!

Firefox. I switched because of tabbed browsing and more security than Explorer, and I like the add ons. It does what I ask of it fine.

Firefox.

However, 2.0.0.5 on Linux seems to be awfully buggy recently. Lots of hang-ups, slow downs, and zombified children (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zombie_process) requiring intervention (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SIGKILL).

Someone also please explain why firefox apparently requires nearly twice as much physical memory as a 3D accelerated window manager (http://www.beryl-project.org/). This seems especially strange.
