Neat! A little competition never hurt anyone. :)

from OP article

Last year's competition, for example, was won by Genesys Consultancy, which suggested a product to help predict natural disasters like volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.

Unlike previous winners, GeoSynch, as the product is known, primarily uses the increased accuracy of the timing signals from the Galileo satellites rather than its positioning application.

Ain't that cool!:)
Btw, I wonder how the russian gps-like system will be working. Global'naya Navigatsionnaya Sputnikovaya Sistema GLONASS is scheduled to achieve full global coverage in 2009 (they're working together with India now).
in November 2006, Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov announced that the HP signal will become available for civilian use in early 2007.

Self-steering cars are nearer...

I used to be quite enthusiastic about Galileo, but the past year or so has been one giant disaster. Why can't anything out of Europe just be a great, innovative business plan being implemented by great, innovative people? Why does everything have to be run by bureaucrats? :(

Because bureaucrats like to control lots of money, and enterpreneurs, expecially big enterpreneurs, like to have their research done for free by the government . Simple as that. :( Shit.

ps. "for free" in the previous paragraph means "paid by the common man through taxes".

pps. back to the OP: ideas? we could build a NSG Galileo suggestion group and debate ideas like crazy!
