Sex - love it or hate it?

This was inspired by another thread I just participated in, so thanks!

Ok, so... basically I don't like sex. I don't enjoy doing it, I don't enjoy talking about it, nothing at all about sex 'does it' for me.

On the rare occasions when this subject has come up in conversation, the women I'm talking to are absolutely gobsmacked, whereas the blokes I talk to can understand (and agree) with it.

That's the reason for my rather bizarre poll, and any comments are very, very welcome indeed! :)

Sex? I am female and I love it, it makes me tingle and I love how warm and contented I feel afterwards, I have a fairly high sex drive (my boyfriend thinks I am trying to kill him) Many of my friends think I am some kind of maniac, as I enjoy sex so much, and I like doing it outside, inside, daytime, night time, you name it really.

Admittedly I haven't had much sex, and experience probably counts for a lot, but when I have had it it's been nice but not to the point that it's worth all the attention and interest people surround it with.

Yeah, some people build it up to be The Ultimate Pinnacle Of All That Is Good And Right In The Universe.

'Course, some deride it as The Root Of All That Is Evil, Exploitative, Unclean and Unholy.

Both sets of people are very silly. It's quite a nice way to spend an afternoon, and a more entertaining use of certain bits of your body than widdling. It's also something where you have to be a bit careful. That's all.

Female, love sex.

Maybe for those of you that "hate" it just really need to look at what you and/or your partner is doing wrong? It's a pretty healthy part of a relationship, though it could be who you're having sex with. If you only do it with people that really suck then you probably won't like it too much if that's all you know, lol...

are you male or female?

have you had sex with other people?

have you had sex with another person more than once?

did you have an orgasm?

did you (if you are male) last more than one minute before orgasm?

sex is biologically programmed to feel great. that way we have an incentive to do it as often as possible.

of course people are more complicated than animals when it comes to sex. so when you arent having a great time, it means that you "arent doing it right".

meaning that you have poor technique, are doing it with someone with poor technique, in general havent had enough experience to know what does it for you, or are only sexually involved with people who mean nothing to you (not that that cant be great sex)

or you have a hormone imbalance.

so depending on your age you should either wait for a person who is so exciting to you that you cant wait to have sex with her/him

or see a doctor.

This is as silly as asking if I love or hate food.

There are some foods I hate. Broccoli, for instance. And mandarin oranges.

There are some foods to which I am indifferent. Bean sprouts would be a good example.

There are foods which I am fond of, such as rice or potatoes.

And there are foods I adore and would gladly gorge myself upon. Artichokes. Avocados. Asparagus. (For some weird reason, all my favorite foods are green and begin with the letter "A"...)

Sex comes in as many flavors as people do. Pun most definitely intended.

Sex is loads of fun. It's all that stuff beforehand where you have to clear your mind that's a bitch.

Humans heap tons of stress upon themselves. Stress kills sex drives. Lack of sex drive means lack of sex. Lack of sex means lack of procreation. How it is we're not all extinct I have no idea.

It's kinda funny, I agree with some opinions here that when you don't like it is because there's something wrong.

My girlfriend was like that, she didn't hated but wasn't too interested in it because she had a bad experience before, but with some time she got confident and interested in it and now her sex drive is really high that sometimes as one member already posted here, I think she's trying to kill me hehehe.

By the way we always have great sex and both of us enjoy it, although is not the most important thing in our relationship.

I remeber I told her and still believe in it: Sex is like cherries in a really delicious cake, we already have that cake but if we don't have the cherries it won't make the cake less delicious, and if we have them it won't affect the cake either because its already delicious. You are only adding more flavor to it.

No, but I have reached the point where I've decided "I'm not going to come like this", she's mentioned she's getting dry/sore/had all her orgasms/look, we really need to get a move-on, were late, and therefore stopped. No need to fake anything.

"Yes, I did you last night. Yes, you were drunk, and sobbing, and I invited you in to try to console you. That's when you insisted that you owed me 200 dollars, and said you would never be able to raise the cash to pay me back. But you insisted that you could pay me back another way. I said no, but the way you clawed at my belt buckle made me give in and let you bend over. After the third time, you said you felt much better about the money, so I wiped myself off in your hair, and pushed you out the door with your pants around your ankles."

There's a whole lot of psychology involved as well as biology, and that can greatly affect how sex is perceived on an individual as well as societal level.

Of course, this is if we're talking about foreplay as well, not just intercourse. Jumping right into that isn't quite so fun without an hour or so of other activities beforehand... well, sometimes it is...

At any given time on any given day, I can't really think of something I'd rather be doing. Maybe if I'm really hungry or really thirsty or someone is holding my head underwater, but short of that I think at any given moment I'd rather be having sex than doing anything else. Something about hundreds of millions of years of evolution building into your biology the need to propogate kinda makes claims by people saying they don't enjoy it fall a little flat. It would seem genes that make people want sex less than others would get bred out over the milenia. Maybe you should see a psychologist or perhaps a psychiatrist? Seems if you really don't like sex that there's something psychologically, maybe even physically wrong with you.

No shit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asexuality). It's also rare. And yet...wow, we sure have a big concentration of them here. Usually very young, sexually inexperienced people who for some reason have decided they are abnormal...maybe it's the new 'cool thing', who knows. In fact, many of the people posting their hatred of sex and so on, would more accurately be described as anti-sexuals (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antisexualism). Because you'd think...no having a sex drive or any interest in sex, that it would follow that these 'asexuals' wouldn't be so obsessed with talking about sex all the time.

Who said anything about being obsessed? Obsessions implies that you crave and use something to the point that it becomes unhealthy and interferes with your ability to live a normal life. I have a good job. I have hobbies. I have friends. I have an active social life. I'll get jumped on for this, but I can't agree with Neesika more. Asexuality implies an indifference to sex, not a hatred of it. If you don't care about sex then why post about it all the time?

Brings to mind the boy who dips the girls pig tails in ink and calls her names - because he doesn't want to admit he has a huge crush on her.

Asexuality here may be a synonym for "can't get laid" or "afraid to be intimate with the opposite sex" or even "don't want to admit I'm gay."

"Because of this lack of research on the subject, there is little documented evidence in favor of either side of the debate. However, many asexuals and their supporters claim asexuality is a legitimate orientation."

This is my main hang-up. The lack of research. I'm not resistant to the idea of asexuality as a legitimate sexual orientation but I have doubts as to the proportion of the population involved and the causation.

http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/science/10/14/asexual.study/index.html

This doesn't question a possible cause. I don't doubt that many people may be asexual but the controversy generally surrounds whether it is a legitimate sexual orientation or not.

For the same reason athiests post in threads about religion. They want to share their views just like anyone else. I don't see Chandy posting in most sex threads here. This particular thread on sexuality would appeal to her. Look at the poll options.

Also, asexuals are stuggling to be taken seriously. Many people think this is a fictional orientation and it's not.

I just looked over Chandy's asexuality thread, I didn't see many more than the usual ones. I checked, and there's 1,435,438 registered jolt users. 1% of that is 14,354. The largest chunk of jolt users by a large majority is NationStates. We have nowhere near 14K asexuals on NationStates, not even half that.

I did kinda chuckle when I started reading the OP when they said that they "hated talking about sex"

For the same reason athiests post in threads about religion.
No, not all atheists. Some of us don't give a shit about religion, and don't engage in the debate. Disinterest. You know...like asexuality.

Also, asexuals are stuggling to be taken seriously. Many people think this is a fictional orientation and it's not.Well, it's a silly, in my mind, to tell someone what their orientation should be like, or what they should like, or not like, as it is to go on and on about hating sex at every single opportunity.

However...this might be hijacking, so...I'll leave it alone.

This doesn't question a possible cause. I don't doubt that many people may be asexual but the controversy generally surrounds whether it is a legitimate sexual orientation or not.

Much better. I need to look at the details of the studies listed though to be honest

Doesn't look at causation, etc.

Kind of re-quotes your third link

Why do we need to look at a cause? It's no one's business but theirs. What causes you to be your sexual orientation? Looking for a cause implies a problem. If that's how they want to identify themselves that's great. Someone with no sex drive deserves to be able to claim that sexual orientation. That way they can tell the guy or girl definatively they aren't interested.

Most people who say they are asexual on NSG are probably afraid of having sex or cannot get laid. But there are some who are truely asexual.I have stated before I am, but the only reason I say that is because I am still young and haven't really been attracted to anyone in a sexual way.Who knows, years later I might find somebody I want to have sex with. For now I call myself asexual.

But most athiests, myself included, are passoinate about religion. Religion effects everything that happens in the world whether you're athiest or not.

For someone who is asexual talking about sex would seem to be more akin to me starting a thread about what brand of number 2 pencils I like or hate the most.

I'm always entertained, and somewhat amused, by those among us who are so sex obsessed that they can't even comprehend anyone disliking it without having a psychological difficulty! Personally I feel totally the reverse - anyone for whom it's such a crucial thing is, perhaps, the one in need of some guidance in life....

guidance in the direction of a penis?

The limited experience I've had (no intercourse, but just about everything up to it) has been pretty nice. The only thing that bothers me about it is the emotional baggage some people bring to it - don't get me wrong, you ought to feel something in my opinion, but you shouldn't toss your whole soul into it. That's what love is for, not sex. Again, in my opinion.

Sex is everywhere, it's pretty much 'understood' that everyone likes it, and it's pretty high pressure to engage in it......asexuals probably have as much trouble with our sexual culture as atheists do in our religious culture.

I was illustrating a point. 14K of the registered members here is 1%. My original point was the amount of asexuals we have posting here is well within reason. Look at Chandy's thread and count the number of people that claim to be asexual. Not a lot.

She never asks anyone to sex talk her. Neither to the other asexuals I've noticed.

Does she post in sex threads? Yes. All of them? Absolutely not. She didn't post in the "if I could shag one person thread" as far as I can tell. She doesn't post in any that aren't relevant to her orientation.

Because if enough evidence comes out showing a lack of causation it'll be a hell of a lot easier for asexuals to gain respect as a sexual orientation. It's in the interests of asexuals really to help gain ammo for their arguments

If a more definitive answer would be helpful, I think a recent British poll had about 1% of adults claiming to be asexual. The whole plea for attention thing is probably less likely in a blind survey.

weren't you the one who said that sex is very important? or whatever...I wasn't paying attention. Yes. Sex is very important. especially in humans where it's not just about procreation but is intimately involved in self esteem, self identification and in bonding between mates.

Sex is everywhere, it's pretty much 'understood' that everyone likes it, and it's pretty high pressure to engage in it......asexuals probably have as much trouble with our sexual culture as atheists do in our religious culture.

Most asexuals just want their orientation to be recognized. Every day they have people tell them their orientation does not exist. Education would solve this.

And why can't people just be tolerant and leave them alone? They say they are, I don't see any reason to doubt them personally. Yes, research is lacking. Just like it's lacking for homosexuality, heterosexuality, ect.

Like the articles I've linked you to say, it's found in nature, I don't see why we should doubt humans would be an exception.

meh, sexuality is what it is, but there really is quite a bit more to life and i think older members would probably recognize this. I realize it is necessary, is nice, and is ultimately considered (in spirituality) some sort of climax (pun intended) of spiritual connectedness. With that said, it is marketed far too much, people are uneducated about its downsides, and it leads to breakups/scandals and whatnot due to (my hypothesis) the stress that society also puts on people due to alternating roles of men and women in modern society. So, with regard to sexuality, I don't hate it, I am *not* asexual, and whatever its not really an integral part of a happy life and in reality I used to think badly of it, but I realize it has a purpose now but still its not really my thing (no pun intended). So if I decide to procreate I suppose it would be integral but if not then whatever. My two cents to all the asexuals and sex fans.

I think more people would be likely to claim they aren't asexual who truely are. Look at it logically, why would you supress your sexual desire just to be labeled "cool." Why would you put up with all the bullshit that asexuals have to deal with (like being told they don't have a real sexual orientation), if they weren't.

Anyway, I'm off for the day, I'll have to pick this up tomorrow.

Every day? That's a lot...

I also msut confess, I find it interesting that after 38 years, two universities, too many jobs to count, three cities, three highschools, three jr. highschools...

I've never really had a single friend or acquaintance ever in all my life and in all my experience that claimed to not be interested in sex. You may say that the number of asexuals here is about right for society at large, but then it would seem the same thing couldn't be said about my life. There are lesbians, gay men and heterosexuals within my historical social circle, but I strain to remember one person who ever said they weren't interested in sex.

Sex is seriously overrated. My girl-friend loves it, but puting her through her paces is more trouble than it's worth... I do all the work and then she wants me to stop so she can "catch her breath". If we just took an hour or so all at once, that'd be fine. I could live with that. The longest she lasts in a stretch is like 10 minutes though, then she wants a break to collect herself and then she's all about it again. She wants to turn it into an all day thing like 5 to 10 minutes at a time. I've got better things to do with my time; it's just not fun any more.
