Hummer-Dinger

Look, I'm not for Hummers. I don't find them aesthetically pleasing or practical. They're far too big on the outside and very cramped on the inside. They're also gas-guzzlers, sure. (They're based on the same platform as the Chevy Colorado, don't know why no one bothers to do this shit to their owners.) I don't agree with vandalism, but, in this case, if you feel so strongly about your message that you need to do this, sure, scratch something in his paint. At least make it so that it's no cost to him for his insurance to cover it.

But don't dick with his tires. Honestly. Because that's just far more fucked up than scratching anything in his car. For one, he now has to deal with the hassle of getting his tires and rims replaced, which I know for a fact is a pain in the ass. He also has to take time that he needs for work (the article pointed out he was doing something that has to do with marketing, I think) and costing him money. My point is: don't dick with a car's tires.

The fact that this was done to him sucks ass, but it is taking a hell of a lot of effort to give a shit. I really hate those fucking things.

Eco-terrorism is not fun, and I hope they find these punks and give them what they deserve. That being said, I wouldn't give this guy any more grief. I'm about to move to DC, and have visited many times. First of all, anyone who lives in the city and owns a car is a little crazy, owing to the chronic lack of parking and the superior Metro system. Secondly, DC has bad traffic. He'd probably burn through his tank trying to get to work at 5mph, when the traffic is bumper-to-bumper. Then again, I really hate driving in DC.

Sure, it's an ugly, wasteful piece of shit, and probably deserves it, but the law is the law. Vandalism is illegal and needs to be punished to its fullest extent regardless of the inherent motivation behind it. Damaging someone's property just because you don't like the hideous, garish monstrosity isn't legal and needs to be pursued like any other crime.

But trust me, I'm not supporting this because of any sympathy towards him. My only concern is that the law is upheld, and nothing more.

Why does it need to be punished to the fullest extent? Over here I think that a ridicidulas jail sentence (considering what was actually done) can be sentenced for vandalism. Although I do agree that they should be punished it should be a fine and volunteer work.

That Hummer was worth nearly $40,000 and is now more or less worthless, or at the very least will require thousands of dollars in repair work. This is a lot more serious than spraypainting graffiti or breaking a window, so it deserves to be punished in a more severe manner than less severe forms of vandalism.

I personally think the punishment should be a fine equivalent to the repairs or replacement of the vehicle, probation, and community service. If it's a repeat offender, I'd throw them in jail.

I don't consider the H2 (based on the Suburban platform) or the H3 (Trailblazer/Colorado with an attitude) to be a real Hummer. That's reserved for the vastly superior H1.

But vandals are just thugs, regardless of reasons.

Ugh, how much it pains me to defend a Hummer when I have to put up with them on narrow British urban roads...but it doesn't stop thug and vandals being thugs and vandals. These people should be prosecuted with the full force of the law.

Hummers should be illegal, but then again so should Eco-Terrorism. Breaking the law wasn't the best way to handle it, but all I can say is 'it couldn't have happened to a nicer vehicle.'

Um, eco-terrorism is illegal. And you don't know what purposes the vehicle was bought for. It is possible that the owner needed a 4wd SUV, and decided on the Hummer.

I'm aware of that. I said it should be illegal. That statement stands whether or not the subject in question is already illegal (ie. Murder should be illegal). I left it to common sense to fill in the blank.

And he didn't need a Hummer. He's a suburban white guy in Northwest Washington, not Special Forces.

Yes we do know why - he said he needed it for image because of a business he was starting

Hummers aren't just military vehicles. Maybe he needs an SUV with 4wd and good ground clearance. Many SUVs would fit the bill, and the Hummer is just one option.

Where did that appear? I checked the article multiple times, and watched the video, and saw nothing of the sort.

Well that sucks - there's all kinds of information missing from that article now. It was much longer when I read it earlier.

Anyway, it may not be there now, but that is what I read earlier.

The original Washington Post article actually quoted him on that. I don't know why the article you saw didn't include it. Both the victim and his mother, whom he lives with, claimed that he had always wanted a hummer and did not consider any other type of vehicle. He both purchased that particular vehicle, and had added lifts, large wheels, and other modifications before bringing it to his northwest neighborhood - where it was too tall to fit in the garage. He claims to be starting up a promotions business and wanted the hummer for his "image".

XD You killed the thread. Very nice.

The thing that confused me is that the guy said he thinks kids did it and used the environmental message "as a cover."

As a cover for what? What other reason would two random people have for vandalizing a Hummer?

I think perhaps the guy was insinuating that it wasn't two random people, but someones who knew and disliked the Hummer owner.
That's how I read it anyhoo.

my heart goes out to the owner who now has to "deal with a number of people who have driven by the crime scene and glared at him in smug satisfaction".
Lord knows how he can carry on. He'll certainly need therapy after that.
