Publi reaction certainly has changed in the last 150 years, hasn't it? :p

He was standing outside the governor's office with a gun in his hand and he refused to drop it. The state trooper acted properly in those circumstances.
What I want to know is whether he was actually trying to harm the governor or if he was just waving the gun around as emphasis. If the former then I don't really feel sorry for him(except that in he lost his life and I abhor all loss of sentient life) but if the latter...well, hindsight is twenty-twenty, but in a situation like that, you have to act to stop people. You can't hesitate in the hopes that they might not take a shot.
The state trooper did give him a chance to drop his gun, though, and that's the really important thing that makes me feel better about the whole situation. He knew what would happen if he did not drop his gun, and he chose not to drop it. If the trooper had just fired without giving him that chance, then I would be upset about this, but...beyond my abhorrence towards loss of life, I'm not.

My favourite Norton I story is probably an urban legend, but I love it anyway:
It was during one of his inspections that Norton is reputed to have performed one of his most famous acts of "diplomacy." During the 1860s and 1870s, there were a number of anti-Chinese demonstrations in the poorer districts of San Francisco. Ugly riots, some resulting in fatalities, broke out on several occasions. During one such incident, Norton allegedly positioned himself between the rioters and their Chinese targets, and with a bowed head started reciting the Lord's Prayer repeatedly until the rioters dispersed without incident.
That's how you go about being Emperor of the USA. Not by waving a gun around until someone has to shoot you. Rest in peace, you poor dumb bastard.

Why Colorado? Why not say New York, it is after all The Empire State.
also strangly reminiscent of Harrison Bergeron

Great story even if it is an urban legend. Imagine a defender of civil rights way back then.

We tend to have violent nutters, for some reason. After all, we did have Columbine, and my high school, Platte Canyon, had a hostage crisis(resulting in the death of my sister's best friend) and I'm sure there are others if I bother to look into it...

The REAL Emperor of Mankind would have turned that pathetic police officer inside out without even looking at him. Then he would have impregnated every woman in the building. WITH HIS MIND.

Apparently he thought he was the Emperor of Colorado, not the Emperor of New York.
As to why you'd want to be Emperor of Colorado, who knows...

I'll remember that if I ever decide to assume the position. (After Bush, a 13-year-old kid can't be too bad, ne?)

I used to work a block down from the Mint, and would catch my bus at the stop just down the hill from the Capitol building - near Civic Center Park. That's just... creepy. A friend used to work at the Art Museum would cut through the Capitol on her way to lunch. :(

Troof. Although they went away for awhile after Whatshisface declared 'all of Colorado is burning.' And I feel sorry for the poor folks who work downtown when the Democratic circus... Erm, I mean the convention roars into town. Even that damn holiday parade (may its organizers rot in HELL!) manages to fuck everybody over. Why, yes, I was delayed for nearly three hours and missed an entire gaming session because I couldn't cross the fucking street to catch my goddamn bus!! But I'm not bitter. Really.
What? What's wrong with the Democratic National Convention? It'll help bolster the economy of Denver for a short while, and it'll be the only chance I'll have to attend a convention.
Also, Tom Tancredo is horrible.

Have you ever tried to catch an RTD bus (never particularly reliable downtown in the first place) when there's something major in town? Even the fucking holiday parade? It's hell. HELL, I tell you! I know that there will be benefits, but not so much to the working poor who depend on the bus.

No arguement there. I never voted for the sod. Nor that nasty bitch... oh, what's her name? Musgrave. Jesus, what a nasty woman. Mush as I deplore negative campaigning, the series of ads in 2004 where a lookalike is robbing the dead and picking people's pockets was priceless.

No, can't say I have, since I live up in Pine and rarely go down into Denver. Guess that will be a problem then.

Well, I tried to get Winter in during the election...I voted for him, but he didn't make it, mainly because so many idiots up here only pay attention to him when he is campaigning, and that's the only time he acts like a reasonable human being.

I lived in Fort Carson for a while, and wasn't too thrilled with it. I actually like Colorado west of Divide or so, but I can't stand the Front Range. Being from Michigan I require greenery and humidity to survive, neither of which does Colorado have much of the year.
Denver actually isn't a bad town, but the Springs...

Emperor Norton has returned to us! Oh no, he's gone again. Bugger.

I lived in Denver for five years, and I have to say that adjusting to the humidity and stagering variety of pollen here in western MI has been difficult. And I missed the lake SO much, it's not even funny. It didn't smell right in the spring and fall.

Ah, yes, well, then you wouldn't like Colorado. Me, I hate humidity. I like the occasional thunderstorm, but beyond that I must be dry. (Mainly because I have really sensitive skin and it gets worse the more humid it is.)
