NSG Hook-A-Canuck (or anyone else with free health care)

Okay, so those of you who saw Sicko saw the part of the movie where a lovely 22-year old single mother drives across the border to obtain free medical care, claiming to be the common-law wife of a Canadian male accomplice. Michael Moore even said, "Why don't you two just get married?" The guy seemed pretty hopeful.

During the credits, Moore displayed this (approximate) message:
"To marry a Canadian for free health care, visit www.hook-a-canuck.com" It is a real website, and they're enjoying the extra recognition they got from the movie.

I thought we could enjoy a little hooking action here on NSG! Of course, we don't have enough Canadians for all the Americans, but there's plenty of other countries that offer free health care. So, if you are interested, offer your name and your nationality (and whether your country offers free health care). I'll put up your names and you can pair off and get to know each other a little better. Probably nothing will come of it in...but hell, I'm not going to preclude the possibility. A little love and free health care never hurt anybody. :D

Genderless,

Canada,

Same sex marriage is legal, ever since the Liberals needed the homosexual vote to win a federal election.

Polygamy is illegal in Canada pursuant to s. 293 of the Criminal Code.

Since the sex or gender of the person I'm theoretically hooking up with don't matter, neither does mine.

I assume you are talking about the family on your mother's side.

Anyways, that won't be necessary in the near future. The Canadian government is currently doing the research (http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/ahc-asc/media/nr-cp/1998/1998_list_e.html)for determining acceptable wait times. Many provinces have already done this.

It is also putting together legislation (http://www.cbc.ca/news/background/healthcare/waiting.html) that would have the government pay for the patient to have the surgery out of the province if they do not receive treatment within the acceptable amount of time.

The federal government is working at implementing a wait-times guarantee that would be in place by 2008. Health Minister Tony Clement said in August 2006 that patients should expect to receive treatment for procedures within an acceptable time. If this does not happen, he said, the patient would be able to seek "recourse."

So if a patient couldn’t get treatment for, say, a hip-fracture treatment, the recourse would allow the patient to go to "another provider, another facility or another jurisdiction," paid with public funds, to get that treatment.

Family on my father's side.

My aunt would have died of pancreatic cancer had we not intervened. They told her the wait time for pancreatic surgery was 18 months - after being told that if she didn't have the surgery, she would be dead in six months.

There were no pancreatic specialists available at the time ANYWHERE in Canada - the people in her province looked to the other provinces, and none were available in less than 18 months.

Apparently, people educated as specialists in Canada are leaving - to make money in the US.

Here's a right-wing blog (no, not really)...

http://www.cmaj.ca/cgi/content/full/161/8/1028

Journal of the Canadian Medical Association

As with nurses, the number of physician emigrants was highest in the mid-1990s, when anger over cuts in provincial health care expenditures was at its peak. In 1996, for example, 731 physicians left Canada. Although another 218 doctors returned, the net loss was 513 physicians - a number roughly equivalent to 30% of the annual output from Canada's 16 medical schools. Those numbers have dropped recently, but even though the net loss fell to only 248 doctors in 1998, that is still equal to the output of several medical schools and it comes in the midst of a worsening physician shortage.

Why are these physicians leaving? Dr. Lorne Tyrrell, dean of medicine and dentistry at the University of Alberta, says lower tax levels in the US are only one reason for the exodus. "This came home to me the other day when I spoke to a young ENT surgeon who is moving to North Dakota. When I asked him why he would leave Canada when we have such an acute need for specialists like him, he told me that opportunities to do surgery here were too restricted. His waiting room is always full here, but he only has access to an operating room in his Edmonton hospital for 2 hours every 2 weeks. In North Dakota, he gets 2 afternoons a week in the OR." Economists may argue that too much surgery is being done, but Tyrrell says that "we can't afford to lose our specialists."

Similarly, family physicians in Canada feel the fee-for-service system puts them on a treadmill. "They tell me that in the US they can work the same hours, but see fewer patients and practise better medicine."

A third reason for the physician outflow is the opportunity to receive postgraduate training in the US. In Canada, medical school cuts have left little flexibility for graduates trying to find residencies in Canada. It is particularly difficult for a physician to return for specialty training after spending a few years in practice.

Yes, the article asks the question of whether or not some really believe in the brain drain... which the article thinks is a bad place to start...

Discussion of the brain drain of Canadian physicians is part of the larger debate about the size of the MD workforce. Most medical school deans now agree that Canada is training too few physicians. As CMA President Hugh Scully told the association's recent annual meeting, "the term 'crisis' is not overdramatic." Canada's 16 medical schools are producing fewer than 1600 new doctors a year. The goal, in Tyrrell's view, should be a graduating class of 2500 students a year.

Short-term measures to plug the gaps would be increased efforts to persuade Canadian-trained physicians to stay in Canada and to repatriate some of those who fled south. But the larger political debate about whether a brain drain exists at all is obscuring the fact that we are losing some of Canada's best and brightest doctors.

Actually, the amount of doctors moving to Canada is larger than the number of doctors leaving Canada, and has been for the last two years.

It hasn't reduced the shortage.

My father came over in the 1950s, when it was far easier to come to the US than to Canada.

When his sister came over, it was easier to get into Canada.

My father's mother, father, and seven brothers were tied up with barbed wire and strangled by North Koreans as they retreated from Taegu. They took two of his sisters to use before they too, were also killed about 20 miles away.

The penalty? My grandparents were teachers - and the North Koreans believed that the best way to "re-educate" people in any occupied area (no matter how briefly occupied) was to kill all of the authority figures - especially teachers.

The youngest sister managed to flee, and live in Korea until the late 1950s.

And if there isn't a doctor there NOW, you're fucked.

It also isn't improving the rate of graduation from medical schools - which is too low to begin with.

I am sorry for your family's loss. And I am grateful that those who survived have been able to leave North Korea.

As to the shortage, the OECD gives Canada 2.1 physicians per 1000 people in 2003. The USA was at 2.3 for the same year. In other words, if Canada has a shortage of doctors, so does the USA.

As for your claims about rate of graduation, I'm going to let you find a source that proves your claim. I'm getting a little tired of reading pdf studies about the Canadian system.

My impression is that the governments in Canada have been aware of this problem for at least a decade andhave been changing policy to suit. I guess this is an advantage to a centralised system, though I am loathe to admit it.

We arn't talking about Moore, we are talking about your argument. Though I will give you props for consistently blaming some one else, usually a liberal, to prevent people from questioning your positions and arguing against.

Your argument is Canada's healthcare sucks. Ok, then let's compare it to the US system. The US has more specialists? Ok, that's great. That's because they can charge whatever they want and work less hours. But who are you going to go to if you just need a check up on strep throat instead of a appendix removed? If you can't find a doctor that takes your insurance, your going to end up going to the emergency room for multiple hour waits and drive up the cost of healthcare for everyone.

And if you bothered to read my link, you will see that the US is also facing a shortage of doctors because the US medical schools scaled back acceptance because of a possible glut of doctors.

The rates are in the previous link.
I'm not sure what part of "Your citation is 8 years old" you don't understand.

Unlike you, normal thread starters don't have hidden, underlying actual topics of the thread that differ from the topic and beginning of the thread. Your attack on the Canadian healthcare system has diverted the point from helping Americans get help from the base level Canadian healthcare system to your usual "omg anything that says the US isn't the best is 3b1l" spiel.

So, we're talking about the Canadian healthcare system.

Which I am.

And you keep hijacking the thread.
Which isn't what the thread is about, sorry. Try again. if you insist on threadjacking this thread to make it about the Canadian healthcare system, I can make rebuttals about the US healthcare system and taunt you on your shitty links.

I read it. This thread is apparently about matchmaking between Canucks and USians, for the purposes of getting free healthcare for USians.

Our entire discussion about the relative merits of the two systems is tangential to the thread.

Read the OP, hijacker.

Merry Christmas.

That would be the reference, not the discussion. It's why you can't just post a site or an article and let the thread go. You post that, then you give the topic of discussion. Which would be in the following paragraph.

I have the reverse program.

I have relatives in Canada who, due to the shortage of qualified specialists, and surgical waiting lists in excess of 18 months, have come down here to the US where our family pays to have their surgery done.

Funny, that wasn't in the movie...:p

As you fail to notice, this thread is about how Moore claimed that the Canadian system is so much better, and the OP agrees...

Apparently, Canadian doctors are fleeing Canada, to the point where saying that the shortage of doctors is at a "crisis" is not "overstating the matter".

See the link I gave from the Canadian Medical Association.

May I add that I did not "technically" say that the Canadian system is better. I simply personally would prefer to live under the Canadian system. That is why I put myself on the list.

There is no doubt that no country has gotten it perfect yet.

I can ignore everything in the US.

Moore says it sucks. Let's take it at that.

He also says that Canada is great. Well, that's obviously not true. It sucks, too.
Actually, no. He doesn't say anything about the hospitals themselves or the doctors. He doesn't say American hospitals or doctors suck or even imply it.

What he does say is that our health insurance providers suck, HMOs suck in the way that they manage care with an eye on the bottom line rather than your health and safety.

For all your 'redefeat communism' whiny bullshit about how universal health care will 'restrict your choices,' private health care does a better, more sinister job of that than any of your perceived 'communist' boogey men.

Private health care is yet another failure of the market. The market makes money, it does not look out for the common good. People need to stop worshiping it.

Mikesburg; Canadian Male, 32.

Gay Marriage and such is all fine by me, but this cat plays it straight.

The good Mikesburg name cannot be tarnished by a 'sham marriage', so I'm going to have to be fussy. Trial marriages will be held with proper notice. Putting out gets extra grades. Enthusiasm counts. Also, don't look me directly in the eye when conducting the interview, and don't ask questions about my relationship with Justin Timberlake, it just gets me beatboxing and singin' sexy back, which just won't do.

You can cook? Damn, that's very tempting... hmm, you would have to be clean-shaven, though. And I prefer long hair (to compensate for my lack thereof). Also, you might want to consider getting a vagina. I like those. Let me know how you make out on that front.

Then again, how good of a cook are you?

Not trying too hard. After all, you can't convince somebody to pick you if you want it to be genuine. Unless it's completely a sham for just the healthcare, in which case... *holds up a big sign saying 'PICK ME!'*

On more serious notes...

The healthcare isn't free. We pay for it through taxes!

Yeah, I know. But we pay lots of taxes too, and all it does is go to 2 billion-dollar military toilets, as far as we can tell.

Alright, I'm gonna sweeten the deal.

Sex is legal at 16. Earlier, if you're married.
You can smoke, gamble(only legalised gambling, and there's only one provider of that, in a variety of ways though) and drink at 18.
The only upper age limits would be 21 to watch R films and vote(not that you could, as a PR), and 67 to withdraw money from the state retirement fund(basically, state claims part of your pay towards a "required" retirement fund for you. I'm not sure that applies to PRs either)

So if you're sick of waiting till you're 18 for sex, come here! Can't wait till you're 21 to drink? Come here!:D

Edit: Fair warning, there's a zero tolerance policy on drugs outside of alcohol and cigs(and no more smoking in any building that is not your own home), although I guess if you like to get high on cough syrup, you could probably sneak that by.

Much to my eternal chagrin work keeps me away much of the day, so I apologize for my absence. Blame Bell.

Sash. That's pretty unique name, at least from my experiences.

Sounds like a good time on the whole; I've travelled a lot myself, considering all things. I've never been to South America however, though I would like to be.

My name is Justin, from New Brunswick in Canada, as I've said before. I enjoy... a lot of different things. Very few things I don't find interesting or intriguing.

I recently finished my first university degree that helped take me all over the world, from the Dominican Republic to South Africa.

Nope. (http://french.about.com/library/begin/bl_numbers.htm) It is quatre-vingt-dix. There is no final -s as in "quatre-vingts" when an additional numeral follows. Please, do not "correct" people if you do not speak the language properly - it will only serve to confuse and disseminate wrongfulness.

Pishposh! Septante, huitante and nonante are very useful indeed and make larger sums more manageable.

Where indeed... It is probably rather blah to you, but I've never been to Europe proper. Passed through, spent a day in London, but never have had the opportunity to spend some time there. Generally speaking I am far too poor to be able to afford that, and that won't change anytime soon unfortunately.

I should be starting my Masters in Philosophy come September. So unless you want to travel to... say... Canada (and even then!) I don't think I can oblige.

You don't perchance enjoy absurdist theatre, stuff like Waiting for Godot or Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, do you?

I've never seen either but I am open to suggestions. I tend to frequent my local theatre which has a wide range - productions in sign language, kathalkali, the local high school musical and obviously some Shakespeare with a light sprinkling of comedy.

Lack of funds - yes i know that one, or I did until recently. Canada? Hmmmm well i do sort of collect continents, I've been to europe (obviously), Asia, Australia and south america. I've also been to Mauritius but i'm not sure where that counts as. So Canada would add north america to the count. I'll just check flight information
