A 75-year-old Swedish woman currently has the fastest broadband connection in the world.
Sigbritt Löthberg, from Karlstad in central Sweden, enjoys a massive 40Gbps connection - many thousand times faster than the average connection speed delivered to homes. It's the first time such a high speed as ever been delivered to a home user anywhere in the world.
Sigbritt has only recently taking up computing. She is the mother of Swedish 'internet legend' Peter Löthberg, who arranged the connection along with the local council's network department.
"This is more than just a demonstration," said Hafsteinn Jonsson, network manager at Karlstad Stadsnät. "As a network owner we're trying to persuade internet operators to invest in faster connections. And Peter Löthberg wanted to show how you can build a low price, high capacity line over long distances," Jonsson told The Local .
Sigbritt is now able to enjoy 1,500 high-definition HDTV channels simultaneously. Or, if she doesn't find anything to watch there, there's also the option of downloading a full high-definition DVD in just two seconds.
The ultra-fast connection speed has been achieved by a new modulation technology. It allows data to be transferred directly between two routers up to 2,000 kilometres apart, without any intermediary transponders.
The distance is, in theory, unlimited - there is no data loss as long as the fibre is in place, according to Karlstad Stadsnät.
"I want to show that there are other methods than the old fashioned ways such as copper wires and radio, which lack the possibilities that fibre has," said Peter Löthberg, who works at Cisco.
The fibre technology behind such high speed connections is "technically and commercially viable," Jonsson said.
"The most difficult part of the whole project was installing Windows on Sigbritt's PC," Jonsson added.
The best part of this is taunting the dial-up users. :p

I was so going to post this earlier
just think in about 6 months it will be obsolete and for some reason slow and buggy:p (most likely all the porn a 75 year old woman enjoys)

Unless it costed the same as a normal connection, I wouldn't have it. There comes a point with connection speed when you're paying for the unnecessary luxury of not having to wait an extra 30 seconds for your download.
I'm sure as file sizes increase a faster connection will become more important, but for now, I would have no use for a connection of that speed.

It takes 2 seconds to download a movie:upyours: That's just not good enough.
Sigbritt is now able to enjoy 1,500 high-definition HDTV channels simultaneously. I don't think anyone can watch, let alone enjoy, that many channels simultaneously..

Wow. I'm sure she needs that much speed. :p Online bridge, maybe?

LOL, so is the next story going to be about how a 75 year old grandmother melted her fibreoptic connection by downloading all the online porn in the world in 2 days? ;)

Nah they have it there. In fact I believe the fiber optic system is very well developed in the US.

I can only dream of fibre connection in Australia, most things still run over green copper unless it's a major connection.

America's broadband speed is below that of even Canada. The telecoms have been dragging their heels as much as possible to prevent having to upgrade the general network.

That sucks. I remember my college had fiber-optic internet long before private use was even possible, outside of major corporate licensees. I think technology sort of trickles down the consumer sometimes, and too slowly.

Likewise.
I manage to get a 6 meg/768k down/up speed connection, and that's as good as it's likely to get around here for the forseeable future. There were oh-so-tasty rumours a while back that one of the cable companies would venture far enough from Glasgow that faster options would become available, but it just hasn't come to pass. :(

Most of the Australia network is copper still, not much "Fibre to the Node" around here.
I call bullshit. Even if she has a super fast connection the routers along the way won't. As for 2 seconds for a dvd movie she must have a screaming fast PC, 'cause you can't move a two gig file between drives in less than a minute or two.

Let's see
40 Gigabits per second = 40/8 Gb per second = 5 Gb per second
Assuming she's using Fibre channel, which is capable of 1Gb/s, 2Gb/s and upto 10Gb/s ... it's possible!

Between partitions you can do it nearly instantly, between physical drives takes quite a while longer. Unless she has a ridiculously high end server quality computer it's useless to have a connection like that.
Her connection may be screaming fast to her source computer at the other end of the pipeline, but beyond that she deals with the same latency causing crap the rest of us do. Packetloss, crappy routers and net congestion.
Now once they start upgrading the network to that kind of performance she'll be way ahead of the curve. Right now I can't imagine she sees particularly faster downloads from most sources outside her immediate network than most people get.

Unless it's fibre connection straight into the PC itself, direct fibre node to node - connected to very fast interface.

Could be. Maybe the article just misphrased it a bit. Seems possible.

to achieve that speed, size alone wouldn't do it. it must be under pressure. the only question is whether it is water, air, or porn pressure that is used to drive that woman's own personal intarwub.

It think it is more the Swedish government forces the InterTube companies to provide faster internet connections.
