That's a lot of money. So, how much money have the various catholic dioceses(diochi?) paid in recent years to settle abuse cases? A billion? Two?

Personally, I think it'd be a lot cheaper just to encourage priests to see a hooker and confess afterward. :p

It's a lot of money.

Though I don't attend church and haven't in years, it was always understood among those I knew that the tradition of marriage among our priests was in part intended to prevent the sort of thing the Romans are shelling out for now. Too bad they'll never consider repealing celibacy.

Call me picky if you like - but in actual fact, priests originally didn't have to be celibate as such.

The church is one of the largest holders of real estate in the world. They therefore decided that priests couldn't get married, so that there wouldn't be any chance of them getting divorced later on and losing their property.

The celibacy thing is just a result of the "no sex before marriage" policy that some aspects of the church tend to enforce.

But then that rule is broken by just about everyone anyway, so why should priests be any different?

They can afford to shell out $660 Million and then some... if they changed thier name to the Roman Catholic Church of Christianity Incorperated it would be the largest internationl corperation in the world by far. They would make Disney and Microsoft look like small time.

Actually, I don't think the ones that would be kept happy with a hooker are the problem....They're either still with the hookers, or maybe gone over the wall with a wife.

In reality it would have been cheaper to turn these bastards in when they were first suspected than farming them around Parishes across the globe.

theres the problem right there.

the church cannot possibly prevent all sexual abuse. what they are guilty of is not dealing properly with it when a victim reports it.

its a crime and should immediately be reported to the police. the church has treated it as a SIN and thus let criminals stay free to abuse more people.

it is a grievous sin on the part of the church that it does not seem to fully appreciate.

it should also be considered a serious crime for bishops to shield criminals and aid them in continuing their crimes. those bishops should be in jail.

Well, if you have sin absolution, why not? Of course I guess sin absolution is what allows them to fiddle little boys...maybe they should set an upper sin absolution level ("Thats it, we're not absolving the following sins-just don't fucking do them, it's not like speeding, you're not going to 'do it without thinking...'')

The Fathers who've been abusing the kids should be locked up and kicked out of the priesthood. The bishops who knew about the sexual abuse should also be locked up and kicked out of the Preisthood. However, I do have to wonder how many of the cases are legit, I mean to say that a priest sexually abused you is a very easy claim to make. I'm not saying that all of them aren't legit, I'm sure a vast majority are, but you got to figure that a few aren't legit.

As for the vow of Celibecy, The Vatican should repeal it and let preist get married or at least have sex, I mean comon, everyone has sexual needs.

well no im not.

if a single priest molests a single child, the child tells the priests superiors, the superior calls the cops and the priest is arrested, the church has fulfilled its duty and should have no more liability.

thats not what the church was doing. the policy of the church as set by the bishops, archbishops and cardinals was to hush it up, blame the child, and send the priest to a bit of therapy in new mexico. after a while he was declared "cured" or "absolved" or something and returned to parish work free to molest more children.

now i have no way of knowing if the current bishop of los angeles did that. he may be too new to have any involvement in any of the cases. but any church official who covered up a terrible crime like this and then made it possible for the perpetrator to molest further children should be in jail.

Strictly speaking the Church shouldn't be absolving these assholes without first setting a penance. The penance for murder etc. is supposed to be "Go confess to the authorites, asshole."

The authorities, being secular, should then throw the Commnadments out the window and carve up said asshole for blood and organs.

As for the vow of Celibecy, The Vatican should repeal it and let preist get married or at least have sex, I mean comon, everyone has sexual needs.

But isn't being a holy teacher all about resisting base desires etc.? I guess Islam would be exempt from this (we all know about Mohammed's relationship with the kiddies) but I'm pretty sure that even masturbating is a sin in most forms of Buddhism.

Choking the cardinal.
Pulverizing the priest.
Axing the archdiocese.
Collapsing the choir.
Mangling the monk.

Well there is a lot of money to be made in selling salvation. You just have to know how to market your invisible product. It's a bloody road but obviously worth it in the end: The Vatican Bank is the richest bank in the world.
