Here is how the hypocrites reduce their carbon footprints. Fly on a private jet, schedule then cancel other private jet flights. For each canceled flight, they get “carbon credits.”

yeah

im waiting for sheryl crow to annouce that she is buying up people's toilet paper credits so that she can be officially using one square (while really using 20) as long as she pays 19 people to use none at all.

I suspect the guy next to me on the bus was one of the 19. :D

Most of them are crazy anyway.

There's huge money in carbon trading. So there's going to be scams, of course, and the rich will never moderate their "carbon footprint" anyway. ;) Doesn't mean there's no use in it at all.

Actually, that cartoon may be incorrect. From what I have seen, artists were brought to the concerts in fuel efficient, cleaner methods, such as bio-diesel.

Doesn't bio diesels require more energy to create then they produce?

Not that I know. For one thing, many sources of them are waste products of what we are already doing, like cooking food.

We were wasting the stuff to begin with.

Many of the artists flew on private rather than commercial aircraft. They might have gotten to the airport in more environmentally friendly vehicles, but they got from city A to city B in private aircraft.

The thing that gets me is the amount of power those amps and such drew for the whole gigantic worldwide concert event. Think about it... they were using at least 2,000 watt amplifiers and in groups. Most electricity is produced by the burning of fossil fuels which releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere...

The amount of power they were drawing would cause the plants to divert more power to the area and increase the kilowats that it itself was producing... how very eco freindly of them all.

And here I am riding in a MUCH-more fuel efficient American SUV. Comparing the fuel usage of a private jet to a couple of SUVs is like comparing the fuel efficiency of a couple dozen SUVs (the jet) to a motorcycle (SUVs). Motorcycles use less fuel because they are much smaller.

So, according to the environmental pinko Communists, I don't have to change my gas-guzzling environment-raping-and-killing habits if I buy these carbon things? Yay. :D Ima buy me some carbon things so I can get a car with 1950s fuel efficiency.

Rich people paying poorer people to do or not do stuff. First, the kings get noblemen to wipe the royal ass. Then, rich people hire drivers. Now, poorer people, like those making only $2 million a year or less, are being paid to use less fuel. Can't the rich people break tradition once and do it themselves?

Small view, much?

What if the event used 1,000,000 kW - which is a lot - but had an impact such that 10,000 people who watched it each conserved 1,000,000 kW of the next few years?

Wasn't it worth the up-front energy expenditure?

From what I observed, the whole she-bang had never a mention of saving the envireonment and I spent at least 2 hours kinda watching it. Most of the people watched it for the music... and the massive party. I bet clean-up for the whole thing was a bitch too...

Celebrities and the government tell people to do a lot of things people don't do. How successful do you think the "Say no to drugs" campaign was? No matter how many times I said no to weed, it didn't stop. What, I don't know. The "Say no to drugs" people didn't mention what.

I'm pretty sure those who watched were either already environmentally pinko Communist or pretty much didn't give a damn about the environment. Why should they when they can by carbon whatevers and pay people to care.

Oh god here comes the 'Al Gore is wasteful!!!!11' crowd to defame the entire environmental movement because of a few people. You fail.

These bourgeois celebrities are generally either hipsters and hypocrites, or simply lack the analysis and intellectual rigor to either attack the real causes of these problems or even to effectively ameliorate the worse symptoms.
The idea that these silly gits (who are so invested in the very establishment that must ultimately be demolished so that humanity may survive) represent those of use who truly care about the fate of humanity is absurd.

Here's the funny thing... if all you are doing is raising awareness, you don't actually have to preach to do that...

But, since you saw a whole two hours of it...

I was thinking out a response already, when I got to "environmentally pinko Communist" and decided there was no point risking getting stupider by responding.

No offense then, but you weren't watching, or I cannot believe that you are. They were constantly bringing up points about environmentally friendly practices, like reusing water bottles, switching to fluorescent lighting, etc.

I had the volume on mute and was talking on the phone most of the time :p. So yeah, I didn't really pay attention, I just stated my very lacking observation.

At least his was on topic. But you do win the grand prize for first mention of Bill Clinton in a formerly apolitical thread. Good work!

On another topic, has anyone thought about how much carbon it costs to create all those plastic bottles that we fill with filtered tap water? Then how much it costs to recycle them?

What an incredible waste.

hows about not using so much energy to throw a party? the trucks alone to lug in the "recycle" containers used more gas than I use in a year. If they want to harp on me about my one foam cup a week, I want them to quit using energy to do such frivilous things.....I can't afford to pay carbon credits because my food comes from another country...I guess I am just a bitch like that.
