Ok, so I'm a complete noob with Ubunto 7.04 (a dangerous combination, I know) but so far everything seems to have been peachy... until I tried to play .mov movie files. I've spent ages looking on the net for what to do, and eventually downloaded MPlayer, but once I'd extracted it all it was was a bunch of files in a folder, which doesn't help me play my movies.
So, what do I do, as a complete layman who knows not how to code?

System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager
That is what you should use to install software. Just search for MPlayer tick the box beside it. It mill tell you a bunch of software that it needs to install with it (called dependencies). Click OK, then click Apply (near the top).
Also, it would be a good idea to search for gstreamer0.10 and install the bad and ugly plugin sets.
