E3 2007: Thoughts?
We're now about halfway through the convention, and I'd like to know what fellow gamers think thus far.
I mean...Microsoft clearly did not come out on top this time around with its conference, mostly because Peter Moore was a jackass. Also, Mass Effect still has some framerate issues, (which I'm sure they'll iron out, I trust Bioware), and Halo 3 left many people with a feeling of "eh...". However, Microsoft did open up its doors after hours to several game journalists to play the first level of Halo 3 on campaign mode, and IGN claims that it's "better than the multiplayer".
Sony's conference, on the other hand, was much stronger, attributed to the fact that their spokesperson wasn't a jerkoff. Clearly, their two biggest sellers are Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, and Killzone 2. MGS4's trailer, despite its lack of gameplay footage, suceeded in blowing my mind, as always. Konami will be having another, smaller conference later, where hopefully we will see some more. Killzone 2 however...left me, personally, a little "meh". The graphics look fantastic, absolutely, (I especially liked the level of expression on the soldiers' faces), but right now, it looks like just another FPS, and not much better than what Halo 3 looks like right now. What MS doesn't have, and Sony does however, is a price drop on the PS3, to the tune of 100 USD, certainly a good thing (I still think it's too pricy though).
Nintendo's conference I have not been keeping up on, so I'd like to hear a bit more from everyone. One good thing though: we won't have to wait 'till next year for Brawl!
In other news: non-exclusive console titles look amazing at this point. Resident Evil 5, Silent Hill 5, Assassin's Creed, Grand Theft Auto 4 (drools), Mercenaries 2...It is a good year for gaming to be sure.
So what do you think? With the way things are going, will Sony come out on top for this year's E3? Will Microsoft? Nintendo? I don't know, I don't argue those things, because all it does is bring in fanboys, and I hate fanboys!

Mass Effect looks freaking awesome. I'm not too worried about them resolving the framerate issues.
To be totally honest, that's the only game I've really bothered to keep up with.

Yeah. I mean, if you can't create a game with a clean framerate, then what the fuck are you doing in the gaming industry. They'll fix it, for sure. They did create an "RPG of the Year" after all.

I stopped liking E3 after they became cocks and made it completely industry-only. PAX for the win.

the trailers have left me with a real "meh" feeling. it just looked like more of the same with slightly better graphics (and this was the HD trailer on my HDTV over xbox live), and probably a worse soundtrack.
didn't see anything that made me go 'wow', like when i first saw GTA4 (i think) where it had motorcycles, or when i first saw the fighter jet in San Andreas...
edit: reading up on it, it looks like you can't fly planes any more (:(), you can't change your physique or hairstyle (i liked the customisation in SA :(), but there are a number of little things that sound pretty nifty.

As much as I hate to admit it, I never figured out how to fly that fighter jet. Only vehicle in GTA that has ever stumped me.
Or maybe I am flying it right, and the controls for it merely leave a lot to be desired.

I don't know about graphics. I think they are a HUEG step above the PS2 and Xbox iterations. But I get what you're saying about "wow". But if I know my GTA, and I do, I'm certain they'll have a lot of interesting things to keep us hooked, vast exploration possibilities, and an good storyline to boot (something pivitol to the GTA series)

WHA!? HULK SMASH!!! Did they cave to Jack Thompson!?
Do they still have helicopters? Please?

yeah, of that i have no doubt. as long as the city is big and you can do most of the stuff you could way back in GTA1, it'll still be mondo fun :)
i've loved the series since the first one (ie the original top-down one), and they have never disappointed. Vice City was my favourite, largely for the soundtrack :D
i'll still be getting IV no matter what
though i have to say the graphics didn't look a huge amount better than San Andreas did/does on my laptop. especially if you download some of the cracks to give you better view depth and stuff. we'll see what it looks like for real soon enough - wikipedia said the animations were way more natural than previous versions due to using a physics engine rather than predefined animations.

yup, helicopters, but no planes. i loved the jet plane from SA so much! :(
on a non-GTA note, i'll have to look into Mass Effect, cos i've been out of the gaming loop for... well... years now. looking forward to Fable 2 - anything about that at E3?

I dunno, I think it looks pretty cool. The city has a real cool gangland look.

Whew...Okay...then maybe at the very least they'll have the Apache...
And yes, you will DEFINATELY have to look into Mass Effect. Imagine it kind of like KOTOR, but multiply everything by 10. And yes, they have information on Fable 2. But, to be honest with you, I haven't kept up much on it.

I think it was really touchy for a jet, but it did take me a few tries to remember and change the angle of the thrusters. It was a VTOL jump jet kind of plane, after all.
BTW: Just checked out the Mario: Galaxy trailer. Platforming supreme!

I thought Microsoft came out on top, mostly for Call of Duty 4. I was worried it was just going to be another WWII rehash, but they really added some new stuff, and it looks cool.
Halo 3 disappointed me a little. Some of the things were hard to pick up on (such as Johnson getting his ass kicked by the Brute) and not knowing who the new voice is at the beginning pisses me off. It's too deep to be Truth's, so it may be the guy who replaced Tartarus. They showed some new and interesting plot items, as well as some stuff you can do in gameplay, such as running with the turret... tres cool.
The graphics looked like an improvement, especially with lighting, but they weren't leaps and bounds over Halo 2, which is what I was expecting. It'll be an interesting game. Cortana falling was interesting, maybe she's finally overloading her processors and "dying". I'm glad the Arbiter is still around. I keep looking for glimpses of the other Spartans, but I haven't seen them, which is also disappointing (read the book "First Strike" by Eric Nylund, it's canon and it has Linda and Fred living I think, Kelly is alive but is with Dr. Halsey somewhere (which I fully expect to be explained in Halo 3), and one other might be alive). Still, I think the game looks cool. Now just to get a 360.
I'm interested in Fable 2, Fallout 3, and another game I can't seem to remember exactly - Cross-something.
I never even knew E3 was on.
