I was about two years old. My friend and I each had a little Batman head filled with candy. He did something that made me mad, I flushed his down the toilet, he cried, I got a spanking, and I cried.

Ah, memories. :p

What is the earliest thing you remember? How old were you then?
I remember crossing the street in a baby carriage (most likely pushed by my mom :)). We were on a pedestrian crossing and there was a huge yellow truck with a round nose right next to us. It was loud. I was under two years old then.
I remember very vividly my time in a hospital when I was two years old. I remember browsing the children magazine and looking down on noisy kids runnig around. :D
What about you?

I remember my brother's second birthday party. He's 11 months older than me. I remember the house we moved out of when I was about three. Not exactly vividly but I remember it. I remember the color of carpet and the paneling on the walls in the hallway, sitting on the third floor overlooking the highway watching all the national guard vehicles drive by when they were out playing. Swiping uncooked spaghetti from the kitchen.

Oh, now I understand why I see "poll coming soon" at the beginning of the thread so often. :)

I remember being in a pink stroller while on vacation in Washington, D.C. when I was around 3 or 4. I also remember going to church with my grandparents when I was around the same age.

I also remember that my psychology teacher last year said that you can't really remember anything that happened before you were around three years old...

I remember my first day of nursery - I was screaming and screaming because I didn't want to go and play with the other children. I also remember vomiting all over my Dads shoulder. I dunno which came first.

Incidentally, I can't remember a single detail of my first day of school. I remember being asked to write an account of it when I was about 8 or 9, and I couldn't because I haven't got the faintest idea what happened :P

That's very strange. The fact I was in hospital when I was two years old is documented, and I remember things I couldn't be told about by someone later because I was alone there (ie without my parents).

I don't know if it's my earliest memory, but I remember the moment that I realized other people did not share my thoughts.

I was very hungry, but my mother wasn't feeding me. I was angry and hurt, because I assumed that since I was hungry she must also be hungry, yet she wasn't bringing any food.

I suddenly had a flash of insight. My mother didn't have the same thoughts and feelings I did! She might not even be aware of my feelings or thoughts!

my memories are totally jumbled up and in no particular order, not to mention most are hazy in the extreme. i remember playing with my new cap guns on the beach with my dad when i was about 7. that's vivid. after that its all hazy till random secondary school memories, really.

i do "remember" other things from my childhood, but mostly i just remember a particular photograph or home video, not the actual memories. its odd :(

edit: oh, i kinda remember being stung by a bee when i was about 5 or 6, and being yelled at by a teacher at the same age. but i don't remember if they're just stories i remember or whether they're actual memories or not

my husband claims to have memories from the womb, I totally believe him, but have no way to verify it.

I have a memory.....of rocking in a chair and my mom singing to me in a house with this horrible landscape wall paper, I am told that we moved from that house when I was 9 months old, and there are no pictures of it, so my grandmother was quite surprised that I could describe it.

As far as not remembering things before you were 3 my 5 year old totally remembers things from her first year and can recount them, even though they aren't "stock family stories" and some of the things she remembers I had almost forgot.

I remember sitting on a hideous vinyl avocado green sofa cushion on the floor of my parents' apartment before they had even gotten a television set...

and our first set was in black and white.

My earliest memory is being put into an incubator shortly after I was born.

I don't have a perfect memory, but I come very close.

My earliest memory is more a dream of my earliest memory. I was climbing out of my crib. I forget how old

The earliest memory I have which doesn't come from a dream (when I was younger and remembered that earlier memory, I dreamt about it, and that's what I remember) was at 2-3 and was a "I think, therefore I am" moment. I suddenly realized that I was...how to put it...a proper human being. It was weird.

earliest...

I remember crawling around on our family's carpet to all of my brothers and sister.

I remember snuggling up to my favorite (then) blue felt blankie.

I remember holding onto the wall while learning to walk.

I can't remember how old I was tho...

Thanks all! This is more and more interesting! :) I did a bit of digging and among the sea of same old I dug out two curiosities. Apparently the average age of earliest memories depends on the culture you are part of...

...and not only Smunkee (and her hubby) and Nervun remember amazingly early experiences!

Our first TV had a rotating selector for changing progammes. I remember the sound it made very well. And I remember my first nightmare - it took place in our old flat we moved out of when I was 3 years old. I remember I became lost in our new flat when we went to see it for the first time. It was empty and I couldn't tell one room fom another. And I remember the inside of the movers car.
