bad news
It's quite possible I won't be around very much for a while. My computer seems to have died on me. I'm still going to try and have it looked at, but it's possible that the video card (which is attached to the motherboard and thus a bitch to replace) has died. Currently I only have internet access from school so I can't go online very much. :(
On a related note: Does anyone know (on average) how much it costs to build a computer?

Sorry to hear.
If you buy the parts somewhere like here (http://newegg.com/), it's pretty cheap.

will miss you! but you're at uni right? look out for computer fairs or something... you can get second hand stuff, probably, and maybe people touting their computer building (or fixing) skills. might be worth a look in :)

Er, I mean, you should not build a new computer at all, clearly the failure of your previous machine shows you are the target of Allah's wrath.

I'm somewhat in a transition for uni. I finished undergrad and moving onto grad school in the fall (though I'm still around the place I did my undergrad and fortunately they haven't shut off my account yet) and I have some friends who have built computers (unfortuantely with mine not working, getting in touch with them is a pain... let's just say that I've been using msn a lot more than the phone for the past several years).
Of course I'm also trying to get in touch with friends who have cars so they can take my computer to the campus bookstore and have it looked at (it might be something that can be fixed affordably, but it might also be a total write-off that I'll have to break into to get my data from the hard drive... yippie...).
But yeah, I'll be on the look out for used computers and the like, at the very least if I can find something that's cheap and generally a pile there might be some good parts, right?

CD ROM? Wow. I didn't know that they still made comptuers without at least CD-RW and DVD drives...
But thank you... I think that if I'm going to buy a new computer it'll be a laptop (I get the feeling I'm going to need one anyways) and I've sort of had the idea of wanting to build my own desktop for a while (though never a particularly good reason to do so until now :p).
Oh no! Good luck. At least you won't have to deal with "pics or it never happened" for a while.
If it turns out to be onboard video card malfunction, you can disable it (follow tis link: http://www.hardwaresecrets.com/article/6/13 for instructions how to do it) and install a new one. If you are not into the computer games, a decent video card can be had for laughable amounts of money. Even less if it is second hand.
Good luck! :)

Graphics cards should be quite recent though, who knows what may happen in the future?!

Right, but we don't know the particulars of this computer. What if it turns out it has the old AGP video bus, not the new PCI Express? In this case it is much better to buy an old card, as the new ones with AGP are more expensive than their PCI Express variants
