My idea is that at some point women who were slimmer than the average of the time became the "In" thing, and it's been going ever since, each generation of fashion designers out doing the last in how skinny they expect their models to be, each generation of models desperately trying to be skinnier than their rivals in order to get into the business, and so on, and so on. A vicious cycle.

I think there's actually some basis to the idea that women like muscular men. RO made a thread about a study which suggested just that. But the skinny=beauty thing? No idea.

There was some designer who recently used a size 12-14 girl on the runway... I believe it was Karl Lagerfield or something... but I pretty much wept tears of happiness... finally somebody who looks healthy and curvy has graced the all too skeletal catwalks of fashion...

but there is a difference. Being ripped is atleast healty. Being anorexic-sized is not.
They did do a recent study that demonstrated that males are extremely sensitive to ads such as the CK ones. Even after just a few seconds of looking at those ads, their body confidence was reduced.
