What's the first music you bought with your own money? Album? CD? Download?

Mine was really two ---

Volunteers -- Jefferson Airplane[and I still like to put it on LOUD!]

Anthem of the Sun -- Grateful Dead [I don't think there were any real
chart-busters, but it was a good album]
Deus Malum

Vinyl. It was, if I recall correctly, from Disneyland Records. One side of the album were the songs from Oliver, and the other side, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

I think I was nine and it probably cost about $3.00.

All you people who think that they're going to be embarrassed by their first purchase can now relax.

Why?

Here's my first-

Pac-Man Fever.

Oh yeah baby. Feel the cheese.

The first CD I bought was Headhunters by Herbie Hancock.

ITYM Jefferson Airplane, no? Pretty good album, but the studio version of the title track gets pissed on by their live version at Woodstock. If nothing else that unsung session hero Nicky Hopkins' piano gets mixed a lot louder.

Pac-Man Fever ain't no Little Drummer Boy by David Bowie and Bing Crosby 7".

Mind you, looking back it certainly has a surreal charm...

I bought a CD as a Christmas present for my mom a couple of years ago. That's the only time I've purchased music, and I swear that it'll never happen again.

the very first was a copy of The White Album because I broke my mom's and she made me replace it (I accidentally scratched it with the needle....oops)

my very first actual purchase for myself I *think* was a Peter, Paul, and Mary 8-track, it was either that or a Carpenter's record, I bought them both around the same time.

Don't laugh, but it was a single by a group called Technohead, titled "I wanna be a Hippie" (youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIQz6YcFgQ4)). Not that I understood any of the lyrics.

My first real music purchase was Dr. Dre's 2001 album.

And my first really educated purchase as an adult was probably "Yes, Virginia" by the Dresden Dolls, only a year or so ago. Before then I didn't care that much about music.

I'm still laughing at my mental image of you dancing around the house, singing "We're not going to take it!", but not when you were twelve. Last week.

People are going to slag me for being willfully obscure if I say that The Pretenders finest moment was the b-side of their very first single. The apparent irony that the were a so-called punk band playing in 15/4 time on The Wait only adds to the appeal.

It was one of two things, I can't remember with total clarity as it was quite some time ago.

I think it was Weird Al first, though.

That movie has a hall of fame bad scene in it-Johnny Cage and Sonya at the rock cliff where Cage tells Sonya that he's going to fight Gorro.

It's like someone was whispering their lines to them just off camera.

Mob Rules - Black Sabbath

By the time Black Sabbath started getting air time, I was well into my Grateful Dead / Bluegrass Rules phase. I saw a guy playing the banjo at a little town carnival and decided that I had to learn... When I found out Jerry Garcia played one, I was a deadhead for life.

After that, I never could listen to heavy metal again. Funny too, I ran across a Captain Beefheart album that somehow found its way into my collection.

Those were the days man. My brand new cassette player needed some rockin', and Billie Jean fit the bill. I wore out the first tape, 'Beat It' and replaced it with yet another Michael Jackson's Thriller. To this day, if I hear anything off of that album, I go into Nostalgic Shock.
